earth-shattering, yes, unmatched, ehhh?

Still a great phone, but a few things competitors do better.

From the previous article about the iPhone being debuted 10 years ago today, it's interesting that the two things that were brought to the iPhone in 2011 -- iCloud and Siri -- are also the two things that have been left on the vine to die since then. Coincidentally, 2011 is also the year that Steve died.

I mean, giving people who pay $900 for a phone 5 GB of free cloud storage in this day and age? Really, Apple?!

With regard to Siri, one current shining example of her ineptness: If you ask Siri "Who is Alabama playing tonight?", she comes back and asks you if you're asking about the football team or the basketball team. If you select the basketball team, it says "Alabama isn't playing tonight. The next game is tomorrow." The Alabama football team is playing tonight, however. Why isn't Siri smart enough to recognize that from the beginning instead of asking me if I'm inquiring about the football or basketball team?!

Both Siri and iCloud need to be reimagined for 2017 in this year's Mac and iOS releases, big time.

Every few weeks, just for fun, I ask Siri how old Michael Phelps is. "Michael Phelps is 55 years old."

Then I ask the question in other ways to help Siri out, like "How old is the swimmer Michael Phelps" or "How old is the Olympian Michael Phelps."

He's always 55 years old.

No, Siri is not the best or most intelligent assistant. She reminds me of Apple Maps when it first came out.
My recent experience,

"What is the weather like in Ontario?"
Siri: "It is currently 21 degrees in Ottawa"

Louder voice: "What is the weather like in ONTARIO?"
Siri: "It is currently 21 degrees in Ottawa"

It finally got it the 3rd time. Ontario and Ottawa do not sound alike at all...

That is debatable. For you and about 5% of the public MacOS is better at best. I own run both platforms and one isn't any better than the other in my opinion. Both are actually more similar than dissimilar now. I'm about done with Mac anyway. One use to pay a premium and get a premium product - Software and Hardware. That is no longer the case today so why pay a premium anymore?

Gaming on Windows is an actual possibility. That's one major benefit.

Mac OS is getting totally fudged too though; System Integrity Protection has screwed over 3rd party developers, ie; TotalFinder. I can't stand the stupid decision to make cmd+x and cmd+v act as copy paste in EVERY application and environment except Finder. Why the hell is Apple so STUPID with this kind of stuff?

Depends what you do. For some things, like graphic design, MacOS is just a more pleasant experience for other things there's nothing in it. Nothing in it assuming you're fine with all the the spying Win10 does. Personally I wouldn't touch Win10 with the longest barge poll available.

I am an Apple loyalist, but not a blind one. The iPhone is surpassed in a few ways. For example, still no way to handle local attachments in email, still can't choose default apps, still stuck on an arbitrary grid for icons, and maybe one or two more things I can't think of right now. Nothing major, just small things.

Honestly, I don't see apple letting users select App defaults. If the did, most of their apps probably wouldn't be in use because there are many that are significantly better. For example, I would love to make Outlook my default Mail and Calendar App. I use Flipboard and don't use news. Some would choose Chrome over Safari and the list goes on.

iPhone still is amazing. But yeah, as for unmatched, this new Xiaomi Mi Mix is ridiculously amazing.

Guess you haven't read the reviews. Have to give up quite a lot for that "bezel free" screen. Bad audio, terrible camera, cut-off apps, less than fun to hold. But yeah, the big display is nice!

A reference to this event on apple.com ....today ....maybe Phil?

Are these guys just too busy counting $$ to care?

The fan base is celebrating this event with more enthusiasm than Apple .

I don't know man. Do you remember the announcement and then the internet afterwards? The presentation gave me goosebumps and sent shockwaves through the internet and even mainstream media. Everyone had and did say something about it. I still watch the presentation when I gotta get amp'd up to speak. It's considered one of the greatest presentations of all time. Don't let the fading glory take away from what it was 10 years ago. If you remember, it was awesome.
I completely agree, I still watch the presentation and I still gets goosebumps like i did when I watched it live. It is easy to forget what phones were like before the iPhone, I havent forgotten how bad they were !!!!

"The quality is unmatched. The ease of use is still unmatched. The integration of hardware software is unmatched. We’re not about the cheapest, we’re not about the most, we’re about the best."

Whatever your view on Apple, I find this statement disingenuous at best, and delusional at worst.

The inner bubble is real.

I find Windows 10 just as pleasant as MacOS and so do others. Arguably far more based on marketshare. In fact, Windows 10 runs better on my iMac than MacSO. WRT to spying, that is complete and utter FUD.

I actually haven’t read any reviews.

Exactly. Just perfect.

"Phil Schiller Says iPhone Was 'Earth-Shattering' Ten Years Ago and Remains 'Unmatched' Today"

I wonder why Android users mocked iPhone users back in 2012 then

original.jpg

...and Timmy, baby, if you are reading, then please add the ability to pause while you record video and please allow me to record that audio in the video recording in stereo - if these things have been added to the latest iPhone, then my apologies, but I've yet to read anything about it so far; I've got the iPhone 4 and want to get a new phone this year, as there are few things that annoy me, but have been rectified in almost all phones now (screen size and storage size) - the two things I moaned about are things that annoy me that haven't been rectified by Apple, as far as I know

Just a heads up Phil, the iPhone display has been matched and beaten - in both overall quality and resolution - by the many manufacturers using OLED.

You are right. Other phones do have better specs. Unfortunately most of the smartphone using democratic wouldn't even know that. Since they mostly use it for social media and candy crush.

The comparisons are becoming like wine; why do some consider a specific wine better than another, whilst some people can't stand its taste? Along with price having no bearing.

they are drunk on their own coolaid. Unmatched, only in profit. Siri best voice assistant, no way and their team didn't create it. Funny how Phil and Tim just twist everything into their own reality.

Schiller opined that "the best intelligent assistant is the one that's with you all the time," such as the iPhone. /QUOTE]
No Phil, the best intelligent assistant is the one that is actually useful. Siri understands me perhaps 1 out of 10 times. This is worse than useless. I've done tests comparing it with Google and the difference is amazing. On the same queries Google understands me almost every time.

i think the alexa convo alone revealed just how much koolaid these guys in cupertino are drinking.

Conversation interface is not applicable for all situations. For example, its much more suited when you are in an enclosed, private environment, vs out in the public. Therefore, unlike a camera, the best conversation UI is definitely not the one you have with you all the time.

It is absolute nonsense to describe the iPhone as 'earth-shattering'. It was a significant step forward in the art, but it was only an evolutionary step. Palm/Treo had been offering smart phones for a number of years before the iPhone emerged, and had a significant third-party developer base offering a wide-range of applications (including satnav).
As did Blackberry. However those were all clunky products with clunky ways of interfacing with your computer. The iPhone did what Apple excels at, it innovates an existing product category so hard, that it seems like a new product category to itself. EG: compare the ipod to all of the other mp3 players that existed before. The main features being an enourmous amount of storage, and a relatively high res display compared to the MP# players by Creative, Turtle Beach etc
Likewise, the iPhone might have lagged behind Blackberry and Palm in some technicals like satnav. But was much easier to use, sync with your computer and interact with the web.

It's funny, I still kind of miss the GPS on my old Blackberry though. How has that not been topped in 10 years?

Hush now, I'm waiting for Siri to answer ... Siri? Siri? I guess she stepped out.

Sorry Phil - Siri needs to grow up! Otherwise Alexa will take over.

Siri needs to be rethought. One can't be tethered to the internet 100% of the time for Siri or any other voice system. It needs to be designed with different interactive levels. Local commands should be known (learned) within the device (basic control). Then within ones home a hub device should be used for anything within it. Only when these devices don't know should the Siri server be invoked to look it up or respond (basically a tiered model).
