For all the people complaining in this thread if you want Apple to get the message stop buying their products. It's not like someone is putting a gun to your head forcing you to buy anything Apple sells. Fewer sales will get Apple's attention more than anything else.

This is what I said! Cloud services takes over what you actually need for storage. And of course you're buying the lowest price iPhone, which is good.

This discussion about what is enough storage is so annoying. It is highly subjective. If you bought a 16GB models and you manage your data regularly an restrict your usage, fine. Great for you. Please stop telling people not to use any smartphone functionality like taking pictures/movies/ listening to music etc, because you don't need it. And don't forget that some ugly iOS problems like unlimited app caching, gigantic other data, re-appearing icloud fotos (that have been deleted) and other funny storage killers are way more noticeable on a 8/16GB model.

Cloud storage isn't for everyone. I only have 500mb of data and still pay $80 a month because Canadian prices are getting ridiculous. If I kept everything on the cloud and streaming I would have that used up in two days.

Sure, if we all lived in a world where unlimited data was affordable than cloud storage might be logical. However some of us don't want to pay as much for our phones as we do for our car payments.

As it stands I already have to delete things every time a major update comes out. You want people to upgrade to more expensive things, how about offering the 6s with at least 32 baseline and use it as a differentiating factor from the 6. To average consumers that will mean more than having more power and a slightly better camera.

How is it not with iPhones other than someone who has a lot of purchased iTunes content? I have a hard time believing most people complaining about storage have no choice but to own an iPhone. And btw, I think 16GB as the entry model is ridiculous but of course Schiller is going to defend it now. But I'll bet any money this fall the entry model starts at 32GB....and new iPhones have 2GB RAM.

Hopefully some of this app thinning stuff they're talking about at WWDC will solve some of these problems, but being able to manually clear individual app cache would be nice.

But you need a good data plan if you want to rely on cloud services.

I'm pretty sure about the 2GB of RAM but since they introduced app thinning they may keep the 16GB entry model for one more year.
I'd buy a 32GB entry model to save $100 but I cannot manage to have only 16GB on my phone anymore

Here's the thing. Phil is almost perfectly right. The main problem in what he said is that it's a few years too early for it to be completely right. Both my parents have the 5c with 8gig. Seems ridiculously low, but they really use it only as a phone, to text and for pictures. Don't need more. For just about everyone else in the world, 16 gig could make sense if the cloud services and carrier plans made sense. They don't yet. When iCloud is reasonably priced (competitive with Dropbox, Amazon, Google), this makes more sense. I have the family share plan with 15 gig on ATT and never go over. But the prices are still a bit high and as we move more to the cloud I could see needing more. So Phil could be right in a year or two, if they fix their iCloud Drive pricing and if the carriers get more come tatie pricing.

As for the MacBook, I already connect NOTHING but the power cord to my devices. I am probably not the norm, but both in my office and at home, I can access everything through the wifi network. Nothing needs to be attached locally. This is a reality today, so I have no issue with the single USB-C port. What I have an issue with is that Apple has a different standard for each device meaning that I need to maintain a collection of power cords. This is bad. If USB-C is the new standard, then make it so on the iOS devices and all the MacBooks. It would a great world if I only needed to carry a single power cable.

I still say that Apple should just drop the 16 gb model and offer the 64gb phone as the entry level iPhone at $299 on contract.

This way, we stop getting complaints from people who bought a 16 gb phone despite knowing fully well it won't be enough storage for them, and then whining after that fact.

Fine. 16gb starting price on their lower margin stuff.

But the iPhone 6+ is already a very high margin item. There is simply no excuse to gouge people more on a phone that is already pushing a grand for the lowest pricing tier. I know the iPad isn't as high margin but you need the storage there even more. You shouldn't be able to advertise a low starting price that isn't usable over the long term for most customers. It feels like the deceptive low starting prices advertised by Comcast etc. It is just being deceptive to customers and Apple of all companies does not need to do that.

In other words: Apple knows best. "Shut up and pass on you money" attitude.
Everybody in this thread knows, that production costs of extra 16 GB are negligibly low...

- So, why 16 GB?

-"Because it is perfect that way"

- Why so thin and short-lived battery?

"Because it is a perfect tradeoff"

Yeah, right.

You care about those price-conscious customers? Please remind us the iPhone 6 starting price. Ridiculous.

Well, if they didn't care so much about thinness and weight, the iPad would still be like the iPad 3. Instead, they optimized software and processors to get great battery life out of thinner and lighter hardware. That's a huge win in my opinion.

Gruber suggested to Schiller that the Cupertino company's iOS devices should come with larger storage capacities on the low end, as the 16 GB of storage provided in the base iPhone 6 or 6 Plus is harder to live with with the current size of apps.

16 GB actually isn't that bad for an entry-level iPhone. It's the 8 GB ones - which are still being sold - that Apple should be ashamed of.

The reason the base model is still 16GB instead of 32GB is very simple.

1. It enables them to keep the headline "from" price as low as possible on their advertising. So currently it's "From £539". If they upped the base model to 32GB that would change to "From £579".

2. If they sold a base 32GB the belief is that most people would buy that model. However by having a 16GB base model it encourages more people to buy the 64GB model which is more profitable for Apple.

As with most things Apple does it's all about keeping their margins as high as possible and squeezing every last drop of profit from their customers.

Personally I have no trouble with 16GB iPhone, my battery life is okay, all my photos are stored on Dropbox and I have all the apps I need. Had this now for nearly 2 years and still got 7GB left 17 Year old user as well

..indeed, and no matter how much a company insists it is focused on its customers and only releasing amazing products, it still has a board and shareholders to answer to.

But remember the most important thing.. no-one is forcing you to spend any money with Apple at all.
Tempting you, yes! ;) Very much so...
But forcing, no...

I don't quite get Gruber's success. While I think he's a smart guy with interesting analysis sometimes, he also can be really arrogant and he seems completely unwilling to criticize Apple.
Wow. If you think Gruber is unwilling to "criticize" Apple you really haven't been paying attention. Ipso facto: this very interview where he calls out Phil Schiller on many Apple failings and flaws and bug bears he has right to his face. Like maybe why there is a 16GB iPhone still. This was a friendly interview, but there wasn't many softballs.
