I have a 16G iPhone and have been buying them ever since the cloud became usable. My photos and music are on the cloud or my NAS. The 'concerns' are only concerns so the media has something to talk about. They mean nothing in the real world. If you change the way you work you can save some money when buying technology. I for one like 16G options.

Nearly every 'concern' in the past has proved to be anything but. Some examples are Lightning connector on iPhone, when Apple dropped ports and changed memory card style on Macbook Pro back sometime ago. And the list just goes on and on. And guess what, they meant NADA, NOTHING, ZILCH. Apple has just continued to sell. It makes NO DIFFERENCE. It just another crappy story to try and create some drama and give the writers viewpoint on how he would do things. All I can say is, thank god he is just a writer, because if he was making decisions maybe it might not have gone as well for them :)

The best media rubbish is speculation on what will happen at WWDC and what actually happens. Coming a close second to that is iPhone concepts of what future models of iPhone may look like. They never do, and never will. Waste of space and words. Fillers for lack of real stories and to keep some schmuck employed :)

Glad to see your Apple stock investments are doing so well for you.

More marketing from Apple about how 'we know what the people want and need'.
I am getting tired of their lack of self criticism and their attitude that if Apple doesn't make it the people either don't want it or need it.
So self agrandizing.
I little humility would make them a more likeable company IMHO.

Honestly, a lot of the issues I see with my friends iPhones are that they don't have enough storage because they opted for the 16gb one, not realizing that it would not be enough. iCloud is mostly for backing stuff up, not for primary storage right now... They really need to start with 32gb...

My brother bought a 16GB device and he now sees that 64GB might have been a better option. But again, he would never use the fully capacity.
So that argument is pretty much bonkers. 32GB would be more than good.

...with cloud storage, blah, blah, blah... Sounds exactly like Google's response as to why the card slot is gone from Nexus devices.

********. The price difference between 16 and 32gb chips is only a few dollars. They are just trying to keep the margins strong.

Shall we put 32GB chip in there or save $0.50 per device and pocket tens of millions as bonuses? Let me think about that... 16GB is enough! Magic!

The horrible screen vibration on the newest iPad Air is all the evidence needed to tell Phil to shut up about "thinner is better".

There's quite a few more things about Apple that should get Phil to shut up. The trouble is that I get the feeling they're beginning to believe their own hype; they really think they're changing the world and they don't seem to appreciate real-world usage and real-world performance of their cheapest products (which are still expensive AF, may I add).

I really hope they try to increase the performance and value of their lower-end products, because they've got the money to do it, and claim to have the 'we don't ship junk/we think solely about the consumer' mentality. They're shipping products (again, the bottom-end ones, the top-end products are fantastic) that have no element of longevity, or which perform as an Apple product should.

Not to say they'll suffer the same fate as Blackberry, but they'll lose a lot of customer loyalty. God knows they're beginning to lose mine, and this thread would indicate that I'm not alone.

This is my problem with Apple these days (although I still love my Apple products). 80% of the public could say that we want a phone with a minimum of 32GB and double the battery, and we will accept the same or perhaps a slightly thicker/heavier phone, but Apple says "No... you don't know what you want. You don't know what is good for you. We do, and we are going to do what we want and you are going to like it!" That is exactly what they did with the new MacBook. Public says "give me retina in the Air," and Apple does this:

The followup question should have been - so with the increased dependance on cloud usage will Apple increase the standard free allocation with iCloud?

"Save money on higher-quality internals, such as the camera"... The margins are already ridiculously high, and the cost of flash storage from 16GB to 32GB is very minuscule in comparison. Stop being greedy.

Same thing applies to the new MacBook. The 1.1, 1.2, and 1.3 processors are all the same price... yet a massive difference in pricing for the laptop. And don't get me started on the SSD costs... highway robbery Simply put, Apple knows they have enough mindless zombies out there (to some extent, I am one myself) that will buy any old piece of crap at a premium price just because Apple made it.

That's great, that's what banks and payday lenders do - punish the poor. They can't afford so much money up front so it's better to cost them more over time instead. That's a pretty gross thing to suggest, especially from a high-up Apple employee. (and not to forget the added cost of data for accessing said files on the go)

No I'd like my storage please. I hope this isn't indicative of Apple's future where we own little on our devices.

Apple is being greedy. 32gb should be standard on all base models. Seriously they make large profits and jumping the storage is going to be a minimal impact. The thing is they want to make sure people always go to that $100 more to get the next model that has an acceptable storage so they can even make more profit.

Try again Phil.

Gruber, you and many MacRumors posters are App-happy gadget heads who consistently look for new ways to insinuate iGizmos into their lives. But most people are happy to use their smart phones in just a few ways such as phone, email, maps, camera, news, note taking and a few music playlists. 16MB is plenty for the majority of users.

Why is it that the other guy is always the one "being greedy"?

The iPhone 6 is too thin as it is. I can't hold it without a case.

Due to the choice of materials and thinness, it slips out of my hands every time.

Im really starting to get annoyed with Apple.

When Schiller was done answering, Gruber's follow-up was something to the effect of "To be fair, you did tell me that there would be questions you wouldn't answer".

So Gruber basically called Schiller out for giving a BS answer, IMO. lol

I'd be content if I could at least use my 16. Both my iPad and iPhone are reporting 4-5GB free when connected to iTunes, but the devices report less than 1GB free. This isn't a big orange "other" section... it shows free and should be free given my apps and media I have. Any way to reclaim it?

Apple is selling peace of mind at very high margins. Buy 64 or 128 and you don't have to worry about big install files or iOS bugs that hide your storage...

Hard to use the camera you're speaking of with 16gb of storage...

I have never had the base model storage on any of my iPhones...and I understand wanting to push people to the cloud...but really 16 gigs is a complete and utter joke. And I use iTunes Match and don't store my music locally....And I still think it's a joke! Those that accept 16 gigs as a reasonable base model are either people who are blind Apple fanatics, don't truly use their smartphone, or are really old and were talked into a smartphone they don't need.

But I'm managing fine with just 16GB. I can't be the only one. I use my smart phone constantly.

Do you actually think everyone is just like you? You seem very dismissive of anyone who isn't. I take it, from your attitude, that you aren't "really old". :p

If you take 2000 pictures a day so that you can share every breath you take via instagram, sure. I use my camera pretty frequently, but only when something is actually worth capturing. 16GB really is not a problem.

You folks really are gadget heads. It's fine. But you are not everybody.

Hes full of crap. Pure, Crap.

the 16gb argument for "lower end cheaper" option would make sense, if the iPhone's 16gb model wasn't costing the same, or more, than many other 32gb or even 64gb models.

Both storage space and RAM could be upgraded and not actually put a significant dent in Apples bottom line. Cloud storage is great, but it's also no suitable replacement for local storage. What? i'm supposed to record all my HD clips I take with my camera directly to the cloud? what about music I buy on iTunes? Not everyone can afford giant packages of data, here in Canuckistan, we're paying roughly 40/mth on average just for 2gb of data.

its a cop-out answer because for some strange reason, Apple refuses to budge on these thing, yet has no problems making their phones some of the more expensive ones on the market.

I always go the highest model storage for my phones. I dont like the cloud in any form. I would rather have all my content with me.
The Macbook needs just one more port IMO, there is room. I actually really like the design, weight, and size of the Macbook, it would be a great laptop to carry around for my writing.

More like, isn't for anyone.

The 12" Macbook is just a pathetic attempt at a money grab by a bean-counter CEO.

And yet it's selling very well and countless people are perfectly happy with it.

You might need more than 1 port but the majority of people never connect anything other than a power cord to their laptop. And if they really need to, they can disconnect the power for a couple minutes to use a USB drive.
