If anyone's tired of my Caribbean beach shots... let me know :p

stunning!

How do you get the sky sooo blue? was this post processing? or did you use any filters here? thanks :)

Atlanta area has now had 3 measurable snowfalls this winter, and 2 since the new year. That's a lot for this area. At least this one didn't really affect the roads.

Yay or nay?
I've been having mixed feelings about my HDR photos lately.
This is a 3 shot hand held HDR while walking my dog (he's near the bottom)

Nay for me. HDR has its uses, but mostly, as here, it's a solution looking for a problem. A busy composition has been made even busier by all the 'fringing' and colour casts in the sky...

Thanks. This is an ad for a circular polarizing filter. :) It's a fantastic piece of kit for sunny locations. It works best when shooting at an angle of 90-degrees to the sun, which is evident in that last photo I posted where the saturation in the sky diminishes towards the left of the frame. The other benefits are that it removes reflection from water and plants, also improving the saturation there as well.

Cheers! :)

Here's another one for today... (that's your's truly enjoying a cold one in Antigua)

Palm Above 49th Parallel

I got a kick out of seeing palm trees in Vancouver.

Been playing with my 35mm SLR lately. Hope something comes of it. The turn around to see results is frustrating compared to digital.

I'm going to have to go with "Nay" as well. Sensory overload on this one. Try to use HDR when it helps to emphasize or articulate your subject. And remember that heavy-handed HDR lends a certain emphatic aesthetic to an image that usually works best with more exuberant, expressive, and surreal subjects.

Its a candid shot :p cant be that fussy ;)

Sure you can. You may not have gotten the feedback you were looking for, but it was really good feedback from somebody who knows what he's talking about. If you're shooting a candid of a particular individual, choose the right moment. If you're shooting a candid of a random individuals, choose the right individual and the right moment. You have more control than you might think.

Wonderful light, textures, and color palette. This image seems ready to receive some text in its blank upper left corner. Would work well as a brochure cover or something like that.

Thank you to all for the HDR tips. I'll keep trying :)

I've been wanting to take a photo of a stream for years but only as of lately am I able to venture out somewhere and find one. I'll keep looking but this one will have to do for now.

If anyone in the lower mainland of British Columbia knows of a good one, preferably one with a mini water water (1-3 feet) please let me know! :)

EDIT: I saw the Pileated Woodpecker again... TWO OF THEM!!! Must be male and female as they were working together. I snapped some photos ;) Not great photos as my 300 lens doesn't have much reach but it's alright I guess.... if I crop it a thousand times :D

There is a trail in Stanley park called Ravine Trail. It has a small stream and might have a very shallow fall or obstacle. http://vancouver.ca/parks/parks/stanley/pdf/stanleypark_printable.pdf

Queen Elizabeth Park has a water fall feature in their garden. There is some kind of stream that goes through Renfrew Park. It looks like that comes from Renfrew Ravine Park which I have thought isn't accessible.

The North shore is probably a good place to find water falls. Places like Lynn Canyon Park or Canyon Creek Park look promising. Perhaps near the Capilano suspension bridge too.

One word of warning. I found out that standing on rocks next to a river could be life threatening! When in Australia I thought it a 'bright idea' to walk on such rocks. I found out how slippery they can be and I slipped. I was lucky to keep on my feet or else I might not be here today. It was that close a call, all in the name of getting a photo!

Not taking any pix at the moment, but I'm writing material for what I hope will be a series of books, using words and pix in a new (?) way. Over the years my pix have been cropped badly, been laid over (or inside ) other pix, had text splattered all over them, etc. I don't get as bothered as I used to; the customer pays the bill, so gets to use pix pretty much as he wants.

So it's interesting to take my own pix as the raw material for other projects, rather than the end product. Anyway, here's a pic I sold today, as a magazine cover (that's why I shot it... with plenty of sky for a title, and space for the 'tasters', etc)...
