You've focused on the tree trunk, allowing the rest of the picture to go out of focus. So far, so good. But whenever we use selective focus, it's like we're telling the viewer to "look here... It'll be worth your while". But the tree trunk itself really isn't interesting enough to be picked out in this way, so the viewer feels kinda let down.

Keep looking, shooting and practising, I reckon... :)

Super light and nicely timed. What don't you like about it?

Thanks. I just mean that, having found it, this place is somewhere I'll enjoy going back to, again and again, to see how it looks in different light, different weather, through the seasons. Plus... there are three pubs in this rather isolated valley - Dunnerdale - and they're all good... :)

Thank you for your thoughts. I appreciate your time and respect your work. I love how you capture moments that seem to extend beyond the picture. I have recently found a fascination with textures and capturing them in different environments. Although it is simply a tree missing some bark, I hoped to capture the different textures, tones, and simply the wear and tear that had occurred. I hope, in this effort it wasn't too much of a let down : )

Thank you, AlaskaMoose! I like your swamp donkey, er, moose photos!
Thanks. Maybe being so weird-looking, moose can be cute sometimes :D While I hunt moose in September, I really enjoy watching and helping them the rest of the year. During the winter I cut some of the willow tree branches in my backyard for them to eat, and leave them hanging from the trees since feeding them veggies and other stuff is against the law. They just reach up to grab the branches when walking though the yard.

Not obvious to some, but this a mall in Scottsdale Arizona in August. Some brilliant architect decided to cover the entire mall in skylight.

My aunt has a sheep ranch where she breeds & trains border collies to herd sheep. My son was "helping" the dog work the sheep. I wish I had been able to get the dog in the shot too, but it was a small pasture, a big herd & they were moving fast!

literally behind my house - was a clear day so took some time to just have a camera in my hands.

Home on the range...

I'm really enjoying the exercises in off-camera lighting you've been doing, but something still brings me back to the simple, naturally lit scenics in the end. Where was this one taken? Looks like it might be a candidate for black and white treatment as well.

I just love the color in this one, and the limited depth of field - it makes the image almost glow.

Love the shots of your pet moose... "I used to have a pet moose..." ;) Reminds me of the old Bill Cosby routine about a pet rhinoceros. Anyway, you always manage to get so close to these guys. The water dripping off his muzzle helps make it for me.

A break in the weather...

Just captivating once again, sir! I want to walk out into this picture. Love the tonal variation and depth.

Josh and Nicole

My niece and her friend came for a last visit yesterday before she heads off to start medical school in a couple of weeks. I told her to enjoy her last few days of freedom for a few years... ;)

Very nice, Uncle Phil... a lovely, relaxed, unselfconscious portrait... ;)

On second thoughts, would it be improved by cropping the left-hand size, to create a square pic??

Thanks John... and to think I was in the hospital the day she was born as my sister was cursing out my brother-in-law for putting her in this predicament (first child/childbirth... ;)) Between curse laced contractions directed at the all males of our species, my sister and the rest of us were joking and laughing almost uncontrollably at the comedic irony of it all-- the agony and the joy. Now, that little hollering baby has completely grown up, and I'm looking around wondering what the hell happened...?? Time certainly flies... wow!

I actually do like the square crop, although maybe I'd crop 2/3rd from the left and a bit from the right side as well. I originally cropped from the 3x2 format to an 8x10 format (which I was the one I posted) because there was too much empty space on the right, and 8x10 works for a slightly larger traditional print size... but, I do like the square. It's kind of old-fashioned in a medium format sort of way.
