After much research for my needs as a shooter of stationary things (primarily). I've decided to go with the Canon 6D for my architecture and landscape needs. The exceptional low light performance was the clincher for me.

For the birding, I'm looking at a second hand Nikon D300 and associated lenses.

The 6D and a 24-105mm is on its way to me and should (fingers crossed) be in my ruddy mitts by weeks end!

Congrats on the new 6D John! I'm sure you'll love it and I'm looking forward to your shots.

Interesting to hear about someone starting over with both Canon and Nikon setups.

Well here is my shot today.

I wonder where I go from here...!

Sounds like a good choice. I look forward to your pictures with it.

Do you mind if I use this as my wallpaper?

Go for it!

Here's my current home system desktop. A bit later from the sunset of the bridge that I posted earlier. I tend to prefer the deeper/darker colors late in the sunset to the earlier version.

And if you prefer this one as well, you may use it.

Missed this one first time round. Great shot!

I feel like this is the next lens that I want to add to my lineup. Maybe I'll hold off for a bit. It feels like every month I am buying more and more photography equipment!

Well here is my shot today.

I'll add my congrats along with others. Step on into a brave new world...

Phew... just finished editing thousands of pictures - woods, wildflower meadows, hills and estuaries - down to about 500. All delivered today, and everyone’s happy.

I couldn’t take the same pix today. The landscape is dry and arid, more like Southern Spain than a ‘green and pleasant land’...

CONGRATULATIONS Archie!

Huge congratulations Ace!

Thanks guys! Looking forward for what's to come!

Are you at Silverstone this week or is this older?

Doesn't feel too long since I last submitted but here I am again!

My friend Emma in a bath!

As always, comments are appreciated.

You won't regret it. It's a super nice lens. I hardly take it off my camera anymore.

First off Peter, I'm loving the Osprey captures. The one returning with brunch went over well here, we spent ages trying to work out who was on the dinner plate! It's interesting how just three or four years ago, we may have felt sorry for the small bird...

For me regarding birding, a lot of mine is to be done in forested conditions and the Canon 7D is way too noisy and slow focusing in the dark there. I see fellow photog's struggling and avoiding such shots all the time. A few weeks ago, I saw a D300 in action in these conditions and had some RAW shots sent to me unaltered. I was astounded at the quality it produced!

I don't believe in being a fanboy of any particular brand or product. I want the best I can afford for whatever I am undertaking. My preference is always to be reusing things too, secondhand reduces the load on the planet, even if it's just my minuscule effort to do so. I can feel good that I've made the minimal footprint I possibly could!

Todays picture from me, still from last Saturday whilst I wandered around the innercity saying thank you and goodbye to my 60D. In the Adelaide University grounds.

@Acearchie

Yeah, I've been to the testing at Silverstone yesterday, was lovely and warm. First time I've ever took photographs of F1 cars and I'm fairly chuffed with what i've got to say the vast majority of the circuit was shut off to the public.

Thanks for the comment on the Osprey shots John and Robert. John, the one you mentioned actually has a hold of a fish (probably a Perch).

Also, just a question about your new set-up John...I'm sure you've done your research but I can't help but wonder…wouldn't the Canon 6D have much greater low light capabilities than the Nikon D300? I know lenses are a big factor but if I was heading into low light for birds I think I'd be reaching for the 6D.

Interesting article here from Photographylife if you haven't seen it. The article discusses and compares crop vs. full frame sensors and specifically uses the D300 to illustrate poor noise handling compared to full frame.

Mine for today is a Common Snipe:

I don't know why, but this really sprung at me, the processing really works in the favour of the wood. Good job man.
Thank you! I liked it too. I don't know what it is, but the photograph makes me happy. :)

That's the problem with viewing small pictures on the net, details lost along the way!

I have seen some spectacular shots of birds in all manner of light conditions taken with the 6D, which pleasantly surprised me considering the single cross type focal point! Being so much newer technology, I would be very surprised if the 6D weren't better at lowlight captures compared to the D300S!

I'm pretty thick Peter, and I haven't had my first coffee for the morning yet, everyone else in the house is dead to the world and it's still dark outside, but, were you giving me a big hint about ff vs crop quality overall? That was something I investigated for birding and I would have ended up with your body and lens combo as the ideal there. Unfortunately for me, it's also way out of my budget right now.

What I ended up comparing were Large RAW's from 7D's with 100-300L's and a D300S with the Nikon 300mm f/4. The low light pictures were quite noticeably different, with a strong advantage to the D300S.

Yup indeed, methinks you are trying to give me a serious hint here! LOL

Time for coffee... and some more thunking this one over. May have to wait a while to afford a good birding lens for the ff after what I've just blown though.
