After much research for my needs as a shooter of stationary things (primarily). I've decided to go with the Canon 6D for my architecture and landscape needs. The exceptional low light performance was the clincher for me.
For the birding, I'm looking at a second hand Nikon D300 and associated lenses.
The 6D and a 24-105mm is on its way to me and should (fingers crossed) be in my ruddy mitts by weeks end!![]()

Do you mind if I use this as my wallpaper?
Missed this one first time round. Great shot!
I feel like this is the next lens that I want to add to my lineup. Maybe I'll hold off for a bit. It feels like every month I am buying more and more photography equipment!
Well here is my shot today.
I wonder where I go from here...!

Back to the Osprey nest this past weekend. The young are still in the nest and not clearly visible but I did catch the mate bringing home brunch.

CONGRATULATIONS Archie!
Huge congratulations Ace!
I'll add my congrats along with others. Step on into a brave new world...

First off Peter, I'm loving the Osprey captures. The one returning with brunch went over well here, we spent ages trying to work out who was on the dinner plate! It's interesting how just three or four years ago, we may have felt sorry for the small bird...
For me regarding birding, a lot of mine is to be done in forested conditions and the Canon 7D is way too noisy and slow focusing in the dark there. I see fellow photog's struggling and avoiding such shots all the time. A few weeks ago, I saw a D300 in action in these conditions and had some RAW shots sent to me unaltered. I was astounded at the quality it produced!
I don't believe in being a fanboy of any particular brand or product. I want the best I can afford for whatever I am undertaking. My preference is always to be reusing things too, secondhand reduces the load on the planet, even if it's just my minuscule effort to do so. I can feel good that I've made the minimal footprint I possibly could!![]()
Thank you! I liked it too. I don't know what it is, but the photograph makes me happy.I don't know why, but this really sprung at me, the processing really works in the favour of the wood. Good job man.
John, the one you mentioned actually has a hold of a fish (probably a Perch).
Also, just a question about your new set-up John...I'm sure you've done your research but I can't help but wonder wouldn't the Canon 6D have much greater low light capabilities than the Nikon D300? I know lenses are a big factor but if I was heading into low light for birds I think I'd be reaching for the 6D.
Interesting article here from Photographylife if you haven't seen it. The article discusses and compares crop vs. full frame sensors and specifically uses the D300 to illustrate poor noise handling compared to full frame.
