Hi

Well I suppose I better introduce myself, my name is Shaun I got my first DLSR about 2 months ago, in fact it was looking at the pictures here that inspired me to try photography as a hobby.

I have been trying to learn the basics for the last couple of months and I have just started Evening classes last week.

Rather then just lurk and look at everyones photo's I thought I post a few of mine up, that I took today. While I'm no where near the general standard here, I hope to be!........one day Lol!

All C & C most welcome, any chance to learn will help...

Thanks

I like the first one better. The greens seem a bit to harsh, especially on the left side. The framing and composition is good for a starter.

And welcome, again. It's easy too go to your post and edit out the extras. Just click the Edit button. Only you and one of the Moderators or Administrators can do that.

I've had a D3000 for about a month now and I've thoroughly enjoyed lurking these threads, learning tips and tricks on how to get the most out of my camera. Anyway, I figured I'd throw my own snaps into the mix and get some feedback/advice on how to improve.

I mostly focus on concert photography. This photo below was actually the second concert I ever shot, Against Me! in Calgary (not the biggest fan, I was there to see the Flatliners). I like how this photo of frontman Tom Gabel turned out. It's a little over-exposed in places, but it's not bad for one of my first times, I think.

Just one of the reasons why we had no power today...

These guys blew over about 1:45 am, just after the alarm company called to tell my wife the vaccine storage unit went out. We had to drive in town and take the vaccines to the Hospital for safe keeping. By the time we got back at 3:30 am, several more trees had gone down. A bit of a wide drive in and back. After cleaning up some of the storm damage, replacing a few shingles on the garage, and retrieving our recycling bins, we drove in town again hoping to fine a hot cup of coffee. This was the only shot I thought to grab.;)

I love the glassy quality and colour of the water and the spray, really nice.
Reminds me of summer, I feel like I can jump right into the picture. :)
You have me wanting to try shoot some breaks in a month or so now :p

Nice to see you posting again :p

<snip>... how cool it would be if the clouds would break and the sun would come out. What do you know.. they did!! Rain clouds all around and then this.... lucky.</snip>

Stunning pic, flosseR!

Plenty of fun to be had on a cold rainy day...

Thanks for the encouragement, and for taking the time to look at the pictures. I have edited my original post.

The only adjustments I did was to use auto-enhance in Aperture, and a slight crop.

I must admit i did turn it on and off a few times and in the end chose to trust it, which may not have been the right choice.

Whats the best way to use that feature?

1) Its nearly always right just let it go on with it.
2) Its mostly right, but rely on your own judgment and occasionally you have to sort it out
3) Never use it, do it manually instead

Thanks
Shaun

Wow what a night. We had a decent storm here too the other night but nothing like that. It's that time of year in the North Pacific.

Let me award you the POTD Smile Award for taking the time to go back and edit your original post. It is much appreciated.
For You: :):)

As for using presets, I'm not a good person to ask. I learned photo editing in PhotoShop and don't use presets of any kind just by habit. Whether I work in PS or A3, I just trust my eye.

Happy Thanksgiving.

Wonderful warm colors and a simple composition. This goes to show that a great photo can also be a simple one.

Not arty in the slightest but cool if you're a gearhead. This HHR puts down somewhere over 1000HP and they're aiming for something over 227 MPH. That's Bruce Canepa in the yellow shirt - he gave us a tour of his shop last Saturday.

Thank you. Your shot looks crazy heavy- did they make it? Looks like fun even without the sun!

If you like the water, I can get you wet lol.

I also asked a question recently on my blog about dealing with portrait orientated photos online. It's new segment called "Ask the Photographers." If anyone has insight on dealing with this orientation in portfolios/slideshows, leave some feedback on the blog. There are a few comments there already.
