I totally buy this as a strong indication of what the iPhone 5 will look like.

Therefore, I'm intrigued to know what the lighter-colored strips are for, which seem to be within the screen area (one top center, and one on either side of the lower edge). It's not Apple's style to show App UI detail in this way - so what are they?

(I'm surprised there hasn't been more speculation on this as it seems a more intriguing aspect of this leak).

Top bit is ear piece and bottom is home button. Or if you mean mor near the edge of the screen, it's just the edge of the screen then that's just pixels due to the angle of the pic.

Please let the iPhone 5 have a larger screen. If it has the same screen as the iPhone 4, I'll be waiting for the iPhone 6.

If this icon represents that we will get a all new design for the iPhone 5 with a larger screen and is successful in sales (which I have no doubt it will), I pretty confident Apple with stick with this design for another year and the iPhone 6 will indeed look the same. I can't imagine them changing form factor every year. Like the Execs at Apple, I feel that with all the controversy in the beginning of the iPhone 4 and competition out there, it was a wise decision to upgrade certain aspects to the iPhone.

iPhone 4 had it's moment in time but hello iPhone 5!!!!:D

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3_3 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8J2 Safari/6533.18.5)

A controlled leak by apple? Everyone was starting to get a bit worried by all the leaked parts that it would just be an iPhone 4 with better camera.

What better way to reignite the excitement?

Problem with a larger screen is it reduces the DPI, thus reducing the efficacy of the retina scream, or at least making it appear ever so slightly more pixellated. Apple will not do a resolution change right now.

Someone brought up a good point earlier. Is there any real confirmation that an iPhone is getting released this year at all? I know logically, they HAVE to, but is there any real confirmation that they will?

I think even Apple could get away with not releasing anything until next year. And it did seem like the moment it didn't come out in June, that everybody immediately jumped toward the iPod announcement time to say that's when it's going to be announced.

No, not those, obviously.

Yes, I meant these, of course. But I agree with your explanation, now I've compared with other icons (such as the camera). They do appear to be a rendering artifact. Thanks for clearing that up.

It will prob be a crappy minor update to the iphone 4. You guys should have got the iphone 4, skipped the 5 then upgraded to the superior 6. Just sayin.

I'm doing that, with the 2 year contract iP4 there is no point buying new one right away.

A little under a year left, then I'm selling my iP4 out and getting the new one :D

As someone previously mentioned, this must be the most credible rumour so far.

Looks like Apple have shot themselves in the foot with this leak.

iPhone 5 vs new iPod Touch

Has anyone considered that the rumoured slim design with the wide home button is actually a new iPod Touch, not an iPhone 5?

The only parts we have seen so far are similar to the iPhone 4, which would indicate that the iPhone 5 is really more of a 4S (i.e. minor changes).

However... this theory still begs the question that if this slim design is for an iPod Touch and not an iPhone... then where are the parts??

Just my rambling two cents..

Are you kidding me, this is the stuff that get's the internet going nuts for Apple again. Especially after the leaked parts looking just like an iPhone 4, Apple is eating this up right now.

Also to the poster above saying this could be for an iPod touch, and that the phone is just a 4. I doubt it, otherwise Apple would have released it on schedule.

it is not an iPod touch, it is not an iPad. it is not a generic mobile device

Let me explain why

1) It is not an iPod, it has an ear slot in the top of the case
2) It is not an iPad, it has an ear slot in the top of the case
3) It is not a generic mobile device, Apple don't do that

However what I would say is this makes me happy

What confuses me is that Apple are not outright denying that the Cava 22 story is utter BS, because

1) It lends some credence to it
2) It sullies Apple, the thought they would do anything with CNET, is like finding out your best friend has shagged lindsey lohan.

I don't think you can infer too much about the bezel size from that image. At that icon size, there's a limit to how fine the bezel could be without disappearing and making the device icon look unrecognisable.

IMO, the bezel on the 'rendered' version is likely too slim.

For all of you thinking that this is the new 4" iPhone (and believe me, I wouldn't be happier): How do you think Apple is handling the loss of 'retina'? A 4" display will drop the PPI to around 278.

To those thinking the phone is just getting smaller with the same (or 3.7") screen: Just stop it. Not going to happen. You couldn't crowbar all the iPhone 4 parts IN a smaller housing. The battery alone wouldn't fit.

My Android has a tiny screen (HTC Diamond), and using the iPhone 4 after using my phone makes the iPhone's screen seem HUGE.

Albeit I do have rather mid-small hands :)

The Diamond runs Windows Mobile not Android.

iPad icon

Umm... anyone thought that maybe, just maybe, this is an iPad icon?

umm...you ever thought that maybe, just maybe, you should have read the post 5 posts up from yours, explaining that

An iPad doesn't have an ear slot in it?
