A few thoughts about the latest iPhone 5 leaks.

Alright.. So now we've seen a supposedly assembled iPhone 5 based on leaked parts.

I like the design, welcoming a 16:9 screen.

However, there are a few things I don't think is very Apple-like, and stuff that looks a little cheap etc.

A) Where is the ambient light sensor located on the front, now that the Facetime camera has taken its place?

B) Why the back camera and flash isn't centered vertically in the black stripe. It looks a little odd when it's so close to the bottom of the stripe.

C) Why not have a full metal back? I know that antennas can't go through aluminium so well, but since the antennas is AROUND the phone, it should be possible to have a full-metal back?

D) It looks a bit odd with the headphone jack on the bottom. It cuts off some of the left speaker making it asymmetric with the right speaker, also, it puts two ports on the bottom - and what should be on the top instead?

What do you guys think?

Personally, I find it odd if Apple will be designing such stuff... They'll need to come up with something really new in order to compete with Samsung's sales.

Presenting the next Apple innovation: the iPhone 4S-Long!

Harder, better, faster, longer, the same looking-er!

The phone after this new release will be even longer still!

Eventually we'll be carrying a phone that looks like a sword.

Think how many rows of apps you can have! Can't wait!

That's my point. These must be fake designs, otherwise Apple would be issuing cease-and-desist letters to all of these companies regarding their leaks. They would be sending letters to Macrumors and whoever is hosting these photos.

With the iPhone 4 the stories were Jony Ive's team produced 3 designs for management to consider. How do we know this isn't one of multiple prototypes that may or may not have been signed off on? And I still think if Apple was going to intentionally leak something to create buzz or take attention off Samsung or whom ever, they would leak something that was more put together, more of a finished product rather than leaking individual parts for someone else to assemble.

I don´t understand all the fuzz and leaks of this phone. Its nearly identical to the current, with the exception of the back side which really isn´t much of a big deal.

Honestly its a boring update, unless its hiding some kickass abilities. I hope of course the inside is more interesting than the outside - then I probably will buy it just for fun. But personally find all these rumors very boring.

Looking more and more like an Apple fail. Same tired design. Hey Apple, your "its our way or the highway" strategy only succeeds if you make something people cant live without. Many can live without iphone 4 version 3.0! So disappointing if this garbage is true.

I thought the whole reason for liquid metal was so you can have a unibody with different surface texture. This mockup has separate parts for the body and lets face it. It looks like trash compared to the 4/4S looks. This cannot be Apple's product. It is either a render or an attempted mockup.

well you can take the plunge and go with another company only to find out soon that this mock up is fake and Apple release a beautiful phone that everyone wants then you will be sad because you fell for it. Or you can just sit tight :p

We *are* sitting tight. We're hoping all this is wrong.

I think what ever they come out with it will more than compete with samsung.

I can see your point about the cameras and i agree but I can still see the final thing looking very much like this.

Lol, look at the join dates of all those "pro-Androiders" here. They all joined MacRumors in July… I wonder which company Google hired to do their social marketing?!

this may be one of the dumbest things i've ever read on a forum. I own 3 macs and I've used nothing but iPhones and iPads since their first generations. I echo the thoughts of many iPhone fans - when you're talking $299+2 year contract, it's time for a new design, not just a refinement.

That said, I consider myself a technology fan, not an apple fanboy.
Android was a joke for a long time, but the OS is competitive now. The H1X, i think, is the first truly competitive hardware (except for the 16GB limit on ATT, which is BS).
WP7 continues to be a joke, but MS is committed, i think it has a chance in the future.

There is no question that Apple is dominant, and it deserves to be.
But all should hope that Android & WP7 become competitive. Otherwise we get nothing but minor updates.

I agree with everything caveated with the Android OS statement. There's some serious mental re-engineering you have to do to get as much out of Android as you do out of an iPhone IMO. Especially when you want to continue to use iTunes for content delivery.

Still, now that Amazon has content delivery on iPhone... it's getting harder to stick with iTunes since Amazon is a seemingly impartial 3rd party to hardware.

As far as drastic changes in Apple hardware design, forget the iPhone:

Last month I gave an android phone a shot, since I was sick of waiting for the new iPhone. some things were different, some things better, some things worse. Google Music, for example, is far behind iTunes. I suppose we'll see if Google puts the effort into making the Play store a real competitor. The experience was positive, but ultimately not enough to keep me. At least not until we see what Apple does.

that is absolutely not true.

2007, the iPhone was drastically different from everything else.
then the iPhone 3G, very different.
2 years later, iPhone 4, very different.
To this point, they have been on a 2-year redesign cycle.

But is that because they intend to change the design very two years or because it took them those first two attempts on a brand new product to find the design they feel works and bow they have so no major changes.

Kind of like the Mac Book had the same basic design for years, same for the iMac. Etc

oh god NOOOOO

PLEASE APPLE if you are reading these comments STOP PRODUCTION and redesign the phone! I'm considering on buying the Samsung galaxy S3 now because you're no longer innovative! Dangit apple I love you so much but now you have disappointed me with the lack of a new design. I am just thankful that I have and iPad so my apps won't go to waste in the hundreds of dollars I spent on apps over the course of 4 years. I am looking for a phone with a fresh OS for customization and apple, lets get real here. You haven't changed the look of the home screen hardly at all. I mean seriously let me customize it with a touch of my personality and something NEW because you still have the same interface with the app setup for 5+ years now. Oh and the ****** bezel you've had for 5+ years!!!! COME ON DAMMIT lets not forget that.

Give us Edge to Edge screens make the phone just slightly wider as well as taller which I expect you'll do for 16.9. I'm sure my big hand will be just fine so I can use it with one hand to type and call people. I Don't mind if I can't reach just the other side with my thumb. I don't give a flying *** I want more property on my screen to glide my fingers over. But you have decided to keep the same freaking ****** bezel that you've had since 2007 so I don't expect it to change. INNOVATIVE this year? Hmm I think not.

I am thinking that this will be the design, but I also think that the actual phone will look a whole lot nicer. Kinda like what the Chinese iPhone 4 knock-offs look like next to a real iPhone 4. They are similar, but the real one looks 100 times nicer.

Yeah not sure that was a good idea. is that a SD card slot in the first picture?

Guess everyone here hates Porsche 911s, Aston Martins etc as they havent changed in decades!

This looks really nice, very refined, love the darker antenna band.

Apple have never changed the design of their products in a significant way every year/two years. They keep their designs similar for a long time - see the MBP, and the G5/Mac Pro.

People want change for the sake of it, and they say they are bored and wont buy it - but thats a lie, they will buy it, they will love it.

Apple do small iterations and improvements, they will have spent a huge amount of time designing the iPhone 4 - they will have designed it to the best of their ability - why throw all that work away just for the sake of change?

Dude.. people don't buy Porsche and Aston Martins every year or 2. And those very few that do, have so much money they don't know what to do with it. It's not the same comparison.

Using your analogy, we'd be still walking around with Motorola Bricks with the suitcase attached!!! Man they'd look cool even today! pfft!!

The design, in both aesthetic and ergonomic terms, peaked with the 3Gs. Perfect. From the 4 onwards they have gotten the form/function balance wrong, I feel. The phone isn't comfortable to hold, has glass on the back (on the back), edges, and right angles. Photographs well, though. If they had put the internals of the 4s, including ret display, in the 3Gs case -- now that would be perfection.

I'm eagerly awaiting the new iPhone and can't wait to find out what specs it will actually cover

Windows 8 is completly new... Touch friendly and click desktop you have a normal pc. I hated windows untill a month ago. Now... I dont know. Seems microsoft is the new company with the real ideas.

Windows 8 is horrible! I've been using the public beta since it was released and it's just aweful! I don't know how you can say its completely new. It's the Xbox interface bolted onto Windows 7.

I wanted to install a program the other day and it took me 10 minutes to find the freaking programs folder! Basic functions should not require advanced computer knowledge.

All that being said I hope this next iPhone is waterproof :)

Looks like the phone is not accessible from the back which means Apple may be going to back to replaceable front glass-- huzzah!

Guys It's fake

Apple would never release a phone with seams in it!

All kidding aside what an iterative design change

How dare u

Steve would have never allowed for this

Seems like all Apple is doing and talking about anymore are numbers. Increasing these numbers, decreasing those numbers making x amount of profit, taking % of the market. This is what happens when you put a suit in charge of things instead of an engineer.

No, this is what happens when you are either acquired or go public. All public companies have the number one responsability of maximizing profit for shareholders. Apple is not some magic company that gets a pass on obsessing about numbers. It's their job.

I guess I really am the only person here who thinks inductive charging with a magnetic back will be the big innovation. To me, the focus on the form factor is misplaced. It will be thinner with a longer screen. To me that's a given and there's nothing wrong with it, just nothing unexpected. In my mind, inductive charging with a magnetic back would be huge as it would completely eliminate the need for any cable at all. This would be ESPECIALLY huge in the car where it's a pain (and even dangerous) to plug in a phone to either a cable or dock. A magnetic back for the new iPhone would also give incredible flexibility for mounting options - and not just in a car - since ugly, bulky, breakable, and unwieldy clamps are no longer necessary.

The increase in space requirement would be solved by a longer screen and reduced dock connector. The connector itself would only be used occasionally such as travel where a charging pad/dock might be less convenient to carry than a cable. All these complaints about the change in connector standard would be moot if you won't need one to begin with. Imagine all the iPhone speakers that would be redesigned with a simply a divot into which you place an iPhone. No breakable connectors.

The other innovations will come from iOS 6 and hopefully improvements to Siri.
