Dude.. you make a lot of sense. And it is where a lot of current iphone users are at. I'm one of them. I don't want to leave iOS because it is so polished and rock solid. I don't use many apps, but i like it's reliability.
The thing that opened my eyes (literally) was when i tried to read the Jobs biography on the phone while i was traveling. It's impossible. The text is way too tiny. I realised then that a bigger screen would make the iphone perfect - and I've been hanging out for that to happen.
Unfortunately, the 16:9 screen that is rumored does not address the readability on the device. This is what's so disappointing.
My daughter has had 2 gens of iphones - 3GS and 4. She took the plunge and got an S3, even though she lost everything she had in the iOS ecosystem. By all accounts, she says the S3 is really great. She uses it a lot for photos, social networking, taking notes, etc. She is very happy. The thing she complains about right now is the battery life. It's possible though that this is because she's fiddling with it a lot because it's new.
Personally, I want to stay with iOS. As I say to people, at least I can sleep at night knowing that no apps are compromised, security is good. The iphone also is great engineering. This was, however, while Jobs was at the helm.
It is a very strong possibility that the mentality of the company has now changed. It's inevitable. It will happen. When you read Jobs' biography, you realise there's not many people with his total anal dedication to detail. His willingness to write off something as "total ******" and not care how he may have hurt those that put a lot of effort into their design. There's not many people either that have his vision and foresight. I think many people here forget that all the good stuff about the apple gear we know today is because of Jobs. Sure Jony is there, but as I've always felt, even a good actor can be a ****** actor with the wrong director. Jobs was the director - but he's no longer there.
It will be interesting to see where apple goes in the future. We can only wonder.
This is EXACTLY how I feel...about the screen and about Jobs. For those of you that think he was just a great marketing guy, read that book. He was essentially the ultimate in quality control and the reason why Apple's products were always more polished than everyone else's. He wouldn't accept anything less. Deadlines didn't matter. People's feelings didn't matter. He was a dick but we benefited because of it. He was completely uncompromising and that is what led to the greatness that we've come to expect from Apple. I'm very worried that a lot of things that are good but not great will be slipping through the cracks now and Apple won't be the same.
