The same article on nowhereelse includes an alleged schematic of the new phone, unfortunately showing the camera lens bulge, as with the 6-series phones.
The camera ring never bothered me on the 6. I hope the schematics you linked are accurate, since they show that the phone's outer dimensions are almost exactly identical to the 5S down to a tenth of a millimeter. That means I should be able to reuse my old ProClip car mount and a travel case that I still have. :p

Nobody is "forcing" anybody to buy this phone, you know. Consumers will vote with their dollars as exactly what they think of the tech.
I didn't say it wudn't sell by the boat load, the question was that low grade tech being released in 2016 was a ripoff. .

The word "ripoff" has a value implication as something that is grossly overpriced, such as designer labels. Anything that has a value implication is highly subjective to begin with. You vote with your dollars.

Why would a budget phone include a flagship feature that are present in the newest phones?

This, exactly this. People DON'T want a budget iPhone that happens to be 4'', they want a 4'' iPhone, i.e. the same as the models with the bigger screens, just in 'mini'. Why is this apparently so frikking hard to get?

Apple has been neglecting the Pro users for a while (how long did they have to wait for a new Mac Pro?), now they're ignoring the demand for smaller screen size and mistake it with demand for a budget phone.

Of course it's obsolete, it's a 4 inch phone.

This must be the comment of the century. I hope you do have a great life in your little "only-bigger-is-better" world

There is a reason Apple stopped making 4 inch phones, and a reason the iPhone 6 sold like no other. Smaller phones are useless in todays world. It would be a mistake for Apple to bring it back.

Err, a few errors there.
They haven't stopped making 4" phones - the 5S is still in production.
Smaller phones function just fine - hardly "useless".
Apple wouldn't be bringing it back, they'd be upgrading the current one.

Agreed. But I have to say if the rumors are true, I'm quite happy with the specs. The A9 SoC means that it will have plenty of performance and will easily last a few years. I don't really care about 3D Touch (a feature so useless that even Samsung didn't bother to copy it ... I kid, I kid :p).

Apple stopped promoting (not making) smaller iPhones because THEY thought everybody wants a bigger screen (because that's what Samsung and Co. were doing) AND because they were especially focusing on the asian market, which prefers HUGE phones (and was dominated by Samsung for that very reason).

Why again did they continue to sell the iPhone5S as the budget version?

Also, it's pretty ignorant to state that small phones are useless in today's world. Based on what?

I personally - and I know many who would agree - want a PHONE that I can use with ONE hand (please, don't even start on that ugly one-hand-"feature" in iOS), I want a PHONE I can easily put in the pockets of a normal-sized person. I don't want a tablet that happens to have phone functionality.

You prefer bigger screens - guess what, there are options for you. But like it or not, there is demand for smaller screen sizes, even if for some reason you're too dense to wrap your had around it.

The upgrades were the iP6. The 5 was not touched for 2 years now. How is a screen that you can barely see with a phone that you can barely hold fine?

Time will tell what the demand is for a smaller phone. For the majority of iPhone users sales numbers proved there isn't.

You're trolling, right?

Maybe, just maybe, because people didn't have a real choice because they didn't want 2-year old specs in a new phone for a lot of money? Maybe, because they did increase their sales in Asia?

I at least know a lot of people who didn't upgrade because they didn't have the 4'' version.

I held out 3 years for a bigger phone from Apple. Why would I want to upgrade to a phone with a 4 inch screen. To me Apple is taking a step backwards if they bring back a smaller screen. I just don't think there is a big enough market, sure it will fill a niche but after a few months the sales will bottom out.

What's going to sell more, the iPhone 7 or the mini iphone?

Why cripple the 4" iPhone? Why not just give people what they want instead of compulsively committing marketing? If some people want a cheaper iPhone and are willing to forego features, then give them what they want, but don't ignore what I and lots of iPhone customers want: a full featured 4" iPhone.

And 720p In 2016 isn't?

Pretty sure the Xperia Z Compact uses a 720p display. It gets Netflix, Youtube, and other HD content. I prefer 1080p on devices, but if the Z Compact can have like 3GB of RAM and a 720p screen, then the iPhone can get a pass. A pass doesn't mean it is great in my eyes either.

Yes, but the smallest compact was something like 4.3 inch and the latest compact was 4.5 or 4.6 inch.

As far as I can see, if the se ships with a 720p/735p screen, it has highest dpi of 4 to 4.3 inch smartphones.
But it will probably get the 1136x640p display. And that is a shame, was hoping for a 1335x750 res, like the 6/6s

I agree with you on the resolution. I would've preferred that resolution for HD content. Nothing scaled or anything of that sort. Hopefully 1080p will be in the 7.

1/3 of users are still on 4-inch or smaller phones, many because they don't like the size/form factor of the 6 (I bought one and returned it after it slid out of my hands 10x). Is a 4.7 inch phone really that much more useful than a 4?? I don't see people doing more/better work than me because they have a larger phone. Also, the 6 "sold like no other" because every iPhone that Apple has put out has sold better than the previous model- it's called rising smart phone adoption rates.

First the guy is clearly trolling.

Second, based on available data, and Apple's own comments the number of active 4" or smaller phones is closer to 50%. The 5s represents a fairly large percentage, but the idea every 5s owner is still under contract is ridiculous, especially considering that the carriers all offer a path to upgrade out of their contract into the new payment plans if they really want to upgrade -- which clearly these numbers prove they are not.

The 6 sold like no other because Apple was not gaining Android customers who were flocking to the larger competitors phones. Apple finally bit the bullet and went back on their own design philosophy they had been hammering the competition over the head with, and as a result attracted a huge number of affluent Android customers who recognize the superiority of Apple's design and ecosystem. The 6 continued to sell well after the 6s arrived as lower income brackets could now afford to jump ship for Apple. That's why the 6 will drop down to the entry level tier when the 7 comes out, to once again draw lower income Droid customers. Add to that constantly expanding markets and markets who were primarily Droid users to begin with -- also with an affinity for large handsets.

Until it's over, based on the conflicting rumors, I'm still betting on two phones, a cheap entry level 4" phone and a more premium version. 3D Touch will likely be on neither, but that's OK. Apple sold handsets for the past two years without Touch ID, despite updating one of them, which is far more important to Apple than 3D Touch. The idea that developers are going to ignore 100 million customers who can use 3D Touch now, because Apple hasn't included it in all of their products is idiotic. There are barely 12 million Watch customers, if that, yet developers have written brand new apps for an entirely different OS platform. And just like with Touch ID and Pay, developers will expand the incorporation in new and better ways, by which time Apple will have updated all of their products to really take advantage of it. As it stands if Apple releases an iPhone priced between the 6 & 6S, why on earth would they give it all of the features as the premium flagship phone? As long as Apple continues selling the 6 without 3D Touch then there's no reason not to offer a new phone without it either. Again it's really no different than introducing the 5c without Touch ID, nor failing to update the 5s with Pay capability for two more years.

The 5s is the "cheap phone" right now, that is why it is still at 50%. It is the current low end phone. Those are the phones that ATT and the carriers are selling dirt cheap. Once the 6 becomes the bargain basemen model those numbers will go up as well. I can't see Apple making any premium 4" phone anymore. The flagships will have al of the bells and whistles. Those that want a smaller phone will do so at a cost to features. Apple is not going to cannibalize their high end models.

I actually use 3D Touch everyday on my iPhone 6s Plus. What also probably factors into that is that I'm Jailbroken, and I added 3D Touch to all the apps that should have it, but didn't. I actually like 3D Touch, can't wait for iOS 10 to have more of it!
