Eh, for me at least, 3D touch was a "Oh that was cool for the first week," but now I forgot how much I missed it with my 6 plus. Apple should've put this out of the gate with features on most, of not all, of its default apps. Not doing that was what really killed it for me.

The thing about 3D Touch for me is that it's not intuitive when we can and can't use it. It's not natural. Part of it is because not all apps have it. But even the apps that do have it don't utilize it for much.

To me the difference in functionality should be a result of the screen size and nothing more. The smallest ("mini") should be designed for one-handed use in all scenarios, middle (iPhone) should be flexible for one-handed use and media consumption, largest (+) should be designed primarily as a tablet with phone functionality. All should be able to do what the others can in a pinch though.

I still hold that the killer iPhone would be an iPod Touch 6 with the cellular modern squished in. That form factor is amazing.

In an ideal world 3D Touch would be there just so anyone buying current generation devices, regardless of preferred display size, has the ability to have the same core interactions.

But we don't know whether they want to hit a particular price point and that makes 3D Touch unviable, or if the size of the device was an issue with battery needed and trying to keep desirable thinness. Maybe even they will surprise us all and 3D Touch will be there!

Whatever the outcome of their careful and considered choices, we can be sure Apple has built the best device possible at the right price for consumers.

Hi Tim! How's the weather in Cupertino? It's cold here.

Well, a 6 is more modern than all those three, yet I found the 6 to be DOA for me. I only got the 6+ and then the 6S+ because of the specs. I cannot see myself going for a phone like the 6/6S due to the lack of specs. If I am paying that much, you better put OIS, FHD panel, a nice sized battery, etc.
Since you seem to be attracted by specs, you should avoid any Apple product entirely....

Are we sure that the 3D Touch chip is not integrated with the touch sensor chip?
It's been six months now, I think Apple could get the chip inside the touch sensor chip, or at least cover by the EMI shield.
Beside, to show that, the definitive proof would be take apart the backlight, and look for the golden film.

If Apple wants 3D Touch to be adopted by developers, why excluding it from a new product like the 5SE?

It is being adopted.

3D Touch is already supported by many developers... even though the only iPhones that can use it are the 6S series.

There are about 600 million iPhone 6, 5S, 5C, 5, 4S and 4 on Earth that cannot use 3D Touch.

And yet 3D Touch is available in many apps. I appears that 3D Touch is important even if every iPhone can't use it.

Thought as much..... u don't have a smaller phone since aimed at a "budget" per say, and still load with up with features that of the top of the line product.

After someone who uses Touch ID, u get used to something, so its understandable why a "future phone" which doesn't have it will cause issues...

However, i use Touch ID so i'l pass on the SE. Camera wise, would be good, but i don't use the current camera hardly anyway... so to me, i won't get any benifet...

I hope the new phone is called the "iPhone SE".

First, it'd be a nice homage to the old "Macintosh SE".

Second, because then I can scratch an "X" at the end of it. ;)

I personally don't care for 3D touch. However, I do think not including it would be a poor choice.

What I really don't get is why Apple doesn't get that people don't want a budget iPhone, they want an IPHONE, just smaller. I'm so sick of those artificial constraints, especially since they're without ANY real justification. I'm pretty sure most who are in the market for a 4'' phone would even pay a premium (I would) - else they would've already gone with one of the currently available 'budget options'.

Maybe what I am getting tired of is the apple tax. At least there used to be a magical wow factor that came with the "premium price" regardless of similar features being offered on other platforms. You might call it entertainment value lol. Just isn't there anymore.

Switch to Samsung and have a happy life again?

iPhone Classic

I wonder if they changes in the ribbon cable can tell us anything about the position of the sleep/wake switch?

I'm passing on this phone if it's the same form factor as a two generation old phone. Was really hoping it would be more akin to the latest iPod Touch.

3D Touch can be convenient sometimes, but I wouldn't consider it a deal breaker. I find it very useful with my home alarm app. I can just deep-press the icon + TouchID and disarm my alarm when approaching my house instead of opening the actual app. Same goes for opening my garage.

Yup. Where can I sign the petition?
Maybe you can start one on change.org :p

It's not so much about 3D Touch per se but about Apple restricting a newly released phone from functions other (actually even older) iPhones have for NO obvious reason.

The sad thing is that sales of the iPhone SE will probably be underwhelming due to its lack of flagship features, and these low sales will be seen as evidence that the small phone should be killed off. Criminy...

If I had to choose between a small phone and 3D Touch, I'd still choose a small phone. But to be clear I do think 3D Touch is useful. I use it every day for:
- shortcut from the waze icon to navigate to work or home
- open a link in a new tab in safari. Hard press is faster than long press plus you have the option to see a preview.

I use it for app switching if I only have one hand available. By the way this would be even more useful on a small phone since they are made to be used with one hand.

I'm on the fence about using it for moving the cursor in text though. For one thing it's just not dependable enough. When I release the touch many times the cursor moves over one letter. At least with the magnifying glass it's a tad more accurate. Also I usually type with two hands so it's very easy to reach up with a thumb to long press on the text. And I usually have my thumb on the text anyway as I'm scrolling over what I've written. I suppose I would find it more useful if 1) it was more accurate, 2) I practiced and got used to using it, and 3) I typed more with one hand using a swype-like keyboard (which I would if they would fix the stupid 3rd party keyboard bug).

Very good point.
I like the 6S I bought, but after using the 4.7 inch screen for four months I have decided I would like the same power and features behind a smaller screen. I would give my father the 6S and buy an SE if it was full featured. Not if it is restricted for an artificial reason. I would stick with the 6S.
