Does OS X disks come with Apple stickers? I hope they come with..

Quite a departure with the X theme'd boxes, I like it.

Whoops.

I believe that this is real. It fits with iLife and iWork. Why not this? People are just set on the X appearing.

Leopard was the "Revolution" so hence the futuristic box art -- as Mac OS X was venturing into the beyond with features and its core. Snow Leopard is a small refinement, making it stable, less in your face etc....so hence the Box Art. I'm not arguing anymore, people are ALWAYS like this with change. There are the few who like change, there are the billions who don't and keep complaining.

The people saying this is "no doubt, the final pacakging!" or "I love this, so appropriate!" are making me laugh a little. I'm willing to bet this is not the camera ready artwork for final packaging...here are my thoughts:

First off, those of you shooting down the white box aspect of it, this part actually isn't far fetched. The latest versions of iWork, iLife, Logic Studio, and FinalCut Studio all come in white packaging. BUT, the latest packaging for Final Cut Studio and Logic Studio, even though utilizing a white box, both are using abstract aura-esque visuals with the iridescent printing technique introduced on the original Leopard box. So it seems to me Apple is still fond of this look (for now).

The other reason the aura theme will stay is because Apple uses that wallpaper as the default for a reason: it has a wide color gamut to show off the abilities of their screens and it contrasts really well with the hardware as a result...which in turn, makes their product photography dripping with gorgeousness.

So, my money is on those images being fake or an obscenely early packaging prototype. It may be minimalist, but that doesn't mean Apple's gonna do it...it's not their style at the moment.

Does anyone else find it convenient that Apple is pushing SL out early to make room for the iPod(/other?) event?

If they released it in September, it would only make sense to release it as a "One more thing..." at the iPod event, but with SL out of the way in late August, what does this mean for the iPod event?

Perhaps, a legitimate, "One more thing..."

Thoughts?

You've already asked this and we responded.

Snow Leopard will not get a mention in an event, like those before it it will just go on sale at a specific time and date.

You do realize he was referring to LEOPARD and NOT SNOW LEOPARD

Made the correction.

Nope, it has been labelled a music event which means it'll focus solely on iPods. I'd say that if they are going to push Snow Leopard out on the 28th August, it is to avoid Snow Leopard over shadowing the ipod refresh. One might see an ipod refresh which will bring in a refresh of iTunes which will then bring in new features and services.

I could careless about the box. I care about what's in it and if it's any good. Frankly, why do these products continue to have such large boxes. It's a shame to waste a resource that most people will probably throw out anyway.

um the exact same photograph of the snow leopard is in the beta editions, so it could simply be somebody just having that image, then placing a few words on it and copying another image from apple.com for the back

e.g. Im not convinced.

the box looks good however

Real cat!

Finally they put a real picture of the cat instead of just being a code name. Apple really fall into this cat thing how about the next version house cat they are cute and cuddly looks good on the picture. Well I'm not buying because of the picture it's the strings of codes in the disc I'm excited on. I believe the disc is already in full production. Apple team is been optimizing this for years and it's been out to developers for years too. Any changes on this is all about security patches which can be done later on update. This is been ready for months IMO and they are on schedule. Apple is no MS afterall.

What the F does using an image of an animal have to do with spending millions of dollars protecting its environment? Does every time google display an image of a platypus, millions must be given to the memorial fund for that beloved extinct species? What about the smaller things in life? What about everytime NBC shows a house with a lawn? Should we set aside more space for lawns to grow, because relative to the nature environment, lawns are hard to come by? What about OFF bug spray that displays an image of a mosquito? Should they create millions of dollars worth of wetlands to protect that species... I mean they are exploiting its image, it only seems fair?

Fing environmentalists and their unfounded objective attitudes towards nature. Firstly, nature changes. Secondly, Apple has zero responsibility to donate any money to ridiculous causes. Let me add, ESPECIALLY in a recession, the last thing apple should do is take money away from those that will actually CONSCIOUSLY benefit from money... ie: humans.

Go donate your money. Stop demanding stupid things of companies.

The viciousness of your response is not appreciated, and I feel a serious amount of hate emanating from you.

1) I don't understand what consciousness has to do with anything? Are you saying that demonstrable sentience or the recipients measurable recognition of 'benefit' is the only criteria of assessment as to what or who warrants any form of cultural-environmental-social assistance from MONEY...
2) Thus far Apple has done nothing with it's money
3) Thus far all corporations have used MONEY to expand market share and industrial explotation
4) Actually Bill Gates is the only techno-giant to really use his capital wealth to enhance the world
5) If the mega-corps who have all the money don't protect the earth from insatiable unstoppable capitalistic industrialization then nobody will.
6) If consumers of products from mega-corps don't ask for ethical responsibility then nobody will
7) I sincerely hope you don't represent a typical Apple owner or user.
8) Snow Leopard is an endangered species. Mankind is not and, I very much doubt, ever will be.

I think they are rushing it out because they've clearly realised that they've got serious competition from Redmond. Microsoft has beaten Leopard already - that part I am sure about after months of using Windows 7 - but is it enough to beat Snow Leopard as well?

Only time will tell, and it looks like Apple wants that time spent with its OS.

Microsoft has beaten Leopard? You must be joking

Solid yet unexciting update

I've been running the expected GM build since Friday pretty much non-stop and must say I haven't found a bug yet. All my print drivers (Xerox), CS4 Suite, MS Office...work as expected. There are no preferences in Quicktime X for the simple fact that it doesn't need any, it gives the required options for export when you tell it to export and it shows the trim button when needed - nothing else is needed. What is a little clunky in my opinion is the fact you need to install the old Quicktime as well as the new in order to get all the previous QT Pro funtionality, I can see Apple hopefully merging the two in future.

Differences between Snow Leopard and Leopard are very subtle on a surface level, they really do look almost identical bar a few extra options here and there and the odd interface change. The new list view when you control-click a folder from the dock has a grey semi-opaque background that looks like an Adobe Air app menu, bit of a step backward in the classiness stakes I think but it still looks okay I guess.

Dock Expose is quite cool and I think is a useful addition to the OS as is the option to set search to only look within the content of the current folder but other than these things all looks pretty familiar.

I don't really notice the speed improvements on this 2.4GHz 4GB Aluminium MacBook as Leopard was very responsive to begin with.

So all in all everything seems very solid and bug-free. Apple have rewritten a lot of the underlying code to allow the OS to move barnacle-free into the next era of development which is great. OSX is now a really mature system which I can't see changing much in the coming years apart from slight cosmetic updates and improvements to the underlying code. It's kind of like Photoshop, there isn't really anything to get excited about in a major update anymore.

I've been using Windows 7 RC for several months and it's brilliant. As I mentioned in another thread, I haven't had any program crashes apart from one time very recently when my copy of Street Fighter IV gave up the ghost when it lost its network connection. The OS itself has been solid ever since I installed it and it's super fast.

I wish that I could say the same about Leopard, but ever since I got that I've seen the spinning beach ball, program crashes ("The application xxx quit unexpectedly") and the dreaded kernel panic WAY too many times.

If I had to rank all of the modern operating systems from the two companies, it would go like this:

1) Windows 7 = OS X Tiger
2) Windows XP SP2+ (but not earlier versions, they were what caused me to buy a Mac in the first place)
3) OS X Leopard
4) Windows Vista SP1+

Now, where does Snow Leopard fit into this list? Can Apple restore my trust and create an OS that is as stable as Tiger?

The best post in this thread so far.

nice french wording, guess we know where the leak is from.

Actually, it's Brazilian Portuguese. Here is a quick and dirty translation of the back of the box:

Improvements from installation through shut down: Mac OS X snow leopard improves your complete Mac experience. Faster, dependable and easy to use, it is the Mac you know and love, now even better.

New core technologies: Snow leopard was built for the future, including compatibility with 64bits and 32 bits. The Grand Central Dispatch optimizes the multicore performance. And the OpenCL technology allows applications to redirect all the potency of the graphic processor.

Support for Microsoft Exchange: Mac OS snow leopard includes integrated support for Microsoft Exchange Server 2007, so you can use Mail, iCal and Calendar both at home and work.

Enjoy!

yep. Both of you are right, and thats what people here need to understand.

Logical, but we can't be sure your conclusions are accurate ...

Oh, and uh ... btw ... to whom were you responding? Brien and the parallel universe Brien? :D

Wow, I'll say it again: just because someone has a copy of the retail box is meaningless. At the company I work at, we have boxes complete for products that do not even exist yet.

Is it likely that this is the real box? Yes. Does that mean that it's already being mass manufactured? No, not necessarily.

Although I agree there....

Fing environmentalists and their unfounded objective attitudes towards nature. Firstly, nature changes.

This is just plain ridiculous. Nature changes, that's right, but many animals and plants are becoming extinct through the actions of humans and their corporations (cutting down rainforests, greenhouse effect, etc.. I guess you know all this). Those humans and corporations have an obligation to be aware of this and to do something about it. And many corporations have programs for this. As a shareholder, I value it highly that Apple strives to build greener products. Although they don't have a direct impact on any animals or plants or whatever. You can bet your *ss that they are contributing to the greenhouse effect by all the power that their datacentres need.

What's the best place to pre-order online? Apple.com or Amazon? I assume Apple, but I don't think they're taking pre-orders yet, and I have Amazon Prime so I would get decently fast shipping.

Apple will likely have free shipping with guaranteed release date delivery has they have done in the past.

I don't know... I sure hope that's not the final design. The front cover just doesn't look that well designed to me, especially in comparison to the recent box designs, including leopard.

I mean, maybe it's the fact that the copy isn't in English, but what designer would leave such a bad looking widow on a subhead? (Back of the box, third paragraph.)
