I believe that this is not a mockup made by a company for giga.de, but an actual pre-designed model made by Apple. Usually, the design team presents their ideas and they create a model for their presentation. It looks like this is one of those designed prototype presentation models.

As for the Home button, it may be a combination of a physical button and those sides of that button, could be used for gestures. I still remember the iPad 2 mockup, before the launch of the iPad 2 and also some cases that looked alike that mockup back then. Therefore, I strongly believe that this is the real deal and we may see a new iPhone with this design.

proto

That has to be the highest fidelity mockup of all time... OF ALL TIME!

but seriously, I still don't like the taper that much. It's not really as drastic as it looked in the case part leak, but... I prefer the purity of flat sides all 'round. Other than that it looks really nice. Here's to iPhone 6 (my upgrade cycle anyway...

ugh. that's horrible. How are you supposed to hold that with those awful curved edges?? The iPhone 4 design is at least very ergonomic, with flat edges that not only make it spectacular to look at, but very comfortable to hold while talking.

boo on these curved-edge iPhone5 rumors! :(
Not sure if you're joking or not. You obviously have a very unique interpretation of what ergonomics is. The iPhone 4 is the opposite of ergonomic.

Aluminum backing

I'll always be afraid that the aluminum will get scratch marks if I set it down anywhere.

Then again, I feel the same about the back of the other iPhones, prompting me to get the clear "invisishield" coverings so that I can actually see the design. I'll definitely still buy it if it's the aluminum backing, but I think I would rather the more scratch resistant glass backing that the iPhone 4 has.

Maybe they will use a super-anodized aluminum-oxide coating that's extremely scratch resistant.

What % of a chance will the iPhone5 actually look like this mockup ? I LOVE the design of it, sure hoping it looks exactly like this, would tempt me away from Android, if not then the Nexus-Prime will be mine.

People on that website are completely stupid.

YES, Apple will release an iPhone 5, a REDESIGN iPhone 5, YES, it will have a bigger screen, and YES it will be slimmer.

ALL evidence points to that and its impossible in terms or marketing and PR strategy that Apple doesn't release a redesigned iPhone 5.

What is new is that indeed, for others countries markets and for people with smaller budget they might release an updated cheaper iPhone "4S".

As for this mock-up, I think it's pretty close to the truth, I think it's good except for the cheap ugly metal/aluminium back.

One thing that stands out is that so many people keep saying these mock-ups look awful and they hope it looks the same as the iPhone 4.

It sounds to me like these people are just trying to feel better about their past purchase. They have an iPhone 4 and don't want to feel like their phone sucks in comparison so they are against it.

That may be true of some people, but not me. I bought an original iPhone at launch for $599. I skipped the 3G and 3GS because i didn't like the cheap plastic back nor the curvature of the back, which made it difficult to hold.

I bought an iPhone 4 because it was a perfect example of Apple's renowned industrial design aesthetic (along with the technical improvements.)

Now, with the suggestion of the awful ergonomics of curved edges returning in the iPhone5, I probably would not buy it. So it has nothing to do with feeling better about my purchase - I don't care at all about cost (in fact, I bought an unsubsidized white iPhone4 to replace my black iPhone4 as soon as it was available.) It has everything to do with wanting the most ergonomically appealing design.

You're the first person I've come across that says they prefer the non-curved back from a comfort point of view. I've found the iPhone 4 makes my hand go numb if I hold it aloft long enough. I never came across this issue with the previous models.

From a purely ergonomic standpoint, the 3G/3GS is a far superior design.

I will take 2 please.

Super excited for this!

Agreed, from a usability perspective, however from an aesthetic perspective I think the iP4 trumps the 3G/3GS

Much like the "contact patch" on automobile tires, the contact area between your fingers and the phone determines the control you have - more contact = more control. By design, the curved edges of the 3G/3GS fall away from your fingers, reducing the surface area in contact with your fingers, whereas the flat sides of the 4 allow much more contact. In addition, the curved edges allow the contact point between your fingers and the phone to "rock" or change in response to minor muscle movements. The 4 allows a more consistent grip without this rocking or slipping. These are the primary reasons for the better control and more confident grip evident in the 4.

So, from a "purely ergonomic" standpoint, the 4 is, of course, much better.

haha!

Looks kind of like the Droid 3 minus the keyboard or the SGS2! If this is fo'rizzle (pardon my slang) than this is going to be hilarious.

New iPhone 4S/5 seen at Gatwick

A friend of mine saw yesterday at Gatwick an iPhone, which looked very similar to this physical mock up. He said it was very very thin.
I've showed him this pic and he ment that the phone he saw was quite similar. Next I asked about the display size. He meant, the display was like his LG Optimus Speed (4'').

Pics or it didn't happen. :p

Call me a skeptic, but I think its pretty unlikely Apple would allow any next gen phones out in public without disguising them - especially somewhere so public!

No, thats ok to be skeptic...If he weren't a year-long friend, I wouldn't believe him.

4" is still too small. browsing the web and reading books would be better on a 4.65" nexus prime.

Totally agree. I used to think my two Nexus phones, the N-One and N-S were just right at 4" screen size, but I have played with the Sprint Galaxy S II, and yes it is large, but after a little bit you get used to it, and reading news sites online and doing e-mails becomes a hundred times easier, and overall better on such a large screen.

I hope the rumors of the 4.3" screen by LG are true for the iPhone5, that would be fucckking sweet, I think 4" in today's market is starting to be a tad too small, and maybe the 4.6" just a hair too big, but the 4.3" size is sweet.

Please I hope the iPhone5 looks close to this mockup, I am loving the square edges and very masculine design, it looks perfect. And of course it better have a larger screen than the wristwatch sized 3.5".

I'm starting to think that no-one holds a phone the same way you do.

I feel that's one underestimated aspect of the iPhone 4 design. Despite its shortcomings, it holds its newness much better than the previous design because it's more scratch resistant than the older iPhones. Aluminium and plastic get scratched and acquire that worn look much quicker.

While I don't own the iPhone 4 and understand its short comings, I always liked the preciseness in the design aesthetics and it still remains very unique among the smartphones.
