Sure it would be allowed. AFTER each party has paid for their device and left that is. What is done outside the store is none of their BIZ. People swap phones all the time!

I'm going to use you as my guinea pig then since I have to pick up mine from that store too. I figured I'd have better luck going after work.
I'm picking up mine at grand central. plan to be there by 7. lets see how it goes.
Hey I live in Portland too. How did you get the option for an in store pick up? When I try to pre order it says that pick up is not available?
Regardless of where they are, our status will not indicate shipping. We will see "available for pickup" next.

Store inventory is currently allocated for pre-orders from last Friday and walk-ins.
I preordered from Washington Square in Tigard at 2:45am Pacific on 9/12/14. The In-Store pickup option for the most part was gone by 3am for the T-mobile iPhone 6 models.
Go to your order page on Apple.com, and however over the blue arrow next to "Processing Items." There you'll see all of the potential statuses of your order. You can tell by the names and descriptions that the possibilities are for in-store pickup specifically.
Other possible statuses include "Preparing for shipment" and "Shipping to store."
Maybe it just skips those steps usually, or those will come tomorrow. Only time will tell. Just hope we all get our iPhones on Friday and everything goes smoothly!
A good sign? Received an email from AT&T today that there has been recent activity related to my wireless account. Oh, baby!
Me too got the mail and I saw contract was updated. Waiting for 2nd line to be added in Att account
Looks like ATT is ahead of the game when it comes to registering upgrades. My Verizon account (which also holds my mother and grandmother's phone numbers) has not shown any update to upgrade eligibility.
Nothing in my apple support profile. I don't think the iPhone 6 will show up there until it is actually purchased and the credit card is charged. Those that are shipped are probably charged at the time of shipping and considered purchased so would show up in the profile.
Ok I'm freaking out right now. I checked my Apple account and it is still saying the same thing "processing" pick up date "9/19", and then i went to check my bank account and my Pending Authorization for the payment of my phone is not there anymore and the money was put back on my account??? WTF does that mean????? What should I do?
