While Ive come down heavy on face id, I must say I LOVE the camera on this X.

Im not a picture taker or instagrammer by any stretch but the b&W portrait with studio mode makes my ugly mug look sublime.

some more ...

Anyone using a custom filter setting for the X?

I find the screen color is pretty off compared to my older Apple devices. It doesn’t even match my laptop or Sony camera. My old 7+ was pretty close straight off my Sony camera in terms of white balance. So what has Apple done different besides oled?

Nice, I've been trying to get some nice portrait shots of my cats but it doesn't seem to work,

It's doable, but Stage Light is only intended for very specific lighting scenarios and will rarely look right. That one cat shot on the stairs from earlier in this thread I thought was the most compelling one I've seen in a while.

It's more of a seek-out-the-scenario situation for Stage Light. Anything you see that is lit by a single, spotlight-like hard light source from a somewhat high angle is a good scenario for Stage Light to do its trick. Anything taken outdoors on a cloudy day, or with indoor ambient lighting (anything but sun shining directly through a window) is going to look weird by the very nature of what it's simulating.

:edit: found the cat on stairs pic - it was lost in the pages on my first look.
Very impressed with portrait mode so far. It still needs a ton of light (even with OIS on the zoom lens). But, when it works, it’s darn cool. Portrait Lighting is much more hit or miss.

This shot was taken in portrait mode with stage lighting. Not bad for a phone!

Single, spot-like hard light source from above eye level. I think this works really well for what the feature is. To create this practically you'd need a Sourcefour Leko - a large, hot spotlight used in film/TV - a C-stand, and a close-focus fresnel lens for the Leko. The room would need to be blacked out with no other light coming in, and then you'd crush the shadows/blacks in post to create this. The fact that it's nearly good enough to look similar to the practical effect without needing a sharp-edged hard source from a fresnel and a completely blacked out room is nuts, but it can certainly look odd in the wrong scenario.
