I am bored with Android now, Jellybean is near perfect, and to me Android is nearly complete, now to move onto something fresh and original again. I think the upcoming Nokia Windows Phone 8 does looks pretty different, might go that route.
Ugh.

The real answer to your question is that most people buy these devices to have a smartphone to use it as such. Whether for business or personal, most just want to do phone/email/message/music/etc. Not to fiddle with the screen. So the look of the OS matters far less than "does it work".

This is the difference.

I think people are losing sight of some of the things that make the iPhone less appealing than ever.

Yes, the physical design is underwhelming to say the least, but the glaring omission of Google Maps in iOS 6 in favor of the underperforming Apple Maps is a total travesty and deal breaker for me.

I was 100% on board with going back to the iPhone after a year away, but no Google Maps is devastating.

The maps aren't an issue for me. I've been using the Apple maps on my iPad, and they are growing on me. I just can't past this stupid idea of making the phone taller. Maybe Tim will win be over next week, but I can't imagine any argument that will convince me that this is a good idea, but I've been wrong before.

Apple is an equal opportunity Hype Machine.

Everything they've introduced came with wild claims.

Perhaps the best was when Jobs introduced the original iPad as "Magical & Revolutionary".

The side effect of Apple's legendary Hype is it triggers the OCD present in many a buyer.

In turn this causes the return rate to skyrocket, as they search for the "perfect device".

It's a tool. I don't need a massive change just cause I'm "bored".

I'm hyped for the iPhone 5 because Apple is a really interesting company with a proven history to influence and move the industry, market, and culture in significant ways. It has nothing to do with fanboyism.

Apple also has a trend of making high quality and innovative products, so it's exciting to see if they can do it again.

I'm excited for it because it will be my first iPhone and I'm looking forward to what it has to offer. I think it will suit my needs and wants better than the Androids I've been using for the last few years have.

It's blind consumerism.

I'll stick with my 32GB I4 unless the 5 is something brand new, if those leaked pictures are of the next IPhone then I'll be very disappointed reinvent the damn thing dont just slap a bigger screen on it , add a chip here and there

Even though the sales will be off the wall, I don't see anything great about the hardware design if the leaks are real.

While knee jerk reaction on a MacRumors thread is to blast anybody who dares criticize Apple or their fans...I see the OP's point.

Like a lot of you I've checked back on a regular basis hoping for a glimpse of what the new iPhone will have. For the longest time I assumed I'd immediately upgrade as I'm eligible and the jump from the 3GS to 4 was huge.

But other than the fact me and my family is ensnared in the iTunes econsystem for thousands of songs and hundreds of apps - I wonder why I'm so eager to upgrade.

Bash it all you want, but the S3 has some really nice features. And with the iPad mini (allegedly) coming this fall, I'd likely move a lot of my iTunes app/media consumption to that device anyway. At that point the question becomes what phone gives me the best features for my buck....

I'm keeping an open mind...

It's blind consumerism.

Not at all, it took a lot for Apple to win me over. However, what they have done a good job is building an ecosystem that makes it difficult to leave.

There may be some that are blind, but that doesn't describe us all and I don't think it even describes the majority.

Seems like the rumored iPhone5 will be underwhelming compared to earlier iP4/4S releases, which were quantum jumps in performance and display. With competitors turning to curved glass, bigger screens, and better display technologies, it's hard for Apple to stay ahead. I was going to buy my first iPhone this time, but may stay with my Nokia N9//pre-paid-TMo. I can't stomach ATT price gouging on smart-phone contracts.

Notice how no one has explained the reasoning behind the hype? It's because there's no rational reason. Those who are buying the hype are doing so based on emotion, not logic. It's like watching the Democratic National Convention...SMH.

You seem really bothered about this 'hype' considering its for a phone you have no interest in. Thats like me being bothered about people getting excited for a new model of Range Rover when I dont even like Range Rover's.

What you and a lot of people fail to understand is that Apple do things they way they see fit. They dont want to make the iPhone 5 like the Galaxy SIII, they do things in their own way (something certain other manufacturers could learn a thing or two from). They are making the phone they want to make and they try to make it in the best possible quality and have a fluid user experience.

So before you lash out at Apple for not 'keeping up' with other handsets I think you need to remind yourself that they are not trying to.

Oh and all the things you have listed above are features of Android handsets, not the iPhone. If Apple were to include all of those things (and lets be honest I dont think they want to) they would be called copycats. And we all know what happens to copycats dont we? LOL

Why dont you let Apple make the phone they want to make and if you like it great, and if you dont like it you know where to find your beloved notification light.

On a final note, dont give me that rubbish about Androids never crashing or acting up. I was reading up on the SGSIII and the forums were full of posts advising people to try a reboot, remove the battery, etc etc when things stop working as they should.

Seriously if you have no interest in the iPhone why are you here? I dont like submarines which is why you dont find me on submarine forums.

It will sell as its the iPhone 5, with a similar but still new design. Alot of people have been waiting for the 5.

If the rumors are correct on the minimal size change it's disappointing to me, but so was the 4S and it sold in record numbers.

'Hype'? What hype? I suspect this time the reaction to the iPhone will be subdued compared to previous models. Moreover, I expect the main advantage of the new iPhone is that in almost every respect respect it will be better than the 4S - in other words, a massively optimized system.

Honestly, I'd like to see a wider iPhone, but I'd be willing to bet that the new iPhone will seem qualitatively different from the 4S not by changing its screen size, but by changing the innards and by using iOS6.

Am I missing something, but doesnt the nexus s have a 4" 16x9 display? And wouldn't that be the same physically as a 4" 16x9 retina display on the iPhone?

The Galaxy Nexus is 4.65" a perfect size and shape for a mobile device.
Add to that it's text reflow allows for vertical use 99% of the time.

The rumored slightly longer iPhone looks too small at least for those who have been using bigger devices for the last year. I hope soon Apple will also offer a larger device and let buyer choose.

You have that choice now, buy the phone made by Apple or buy any other phone on the market.

How is that so hard for folks to grasp, the iPhone is what it is and if you do not like it then do not buy it.

Exactly right. The people who want significant changes from the iPhone are the people who in reality just need an Android. Their wishes have already been answered.

The iPhone is what it is, and is ideal for people who want exactly that.
