Why are people so desperate to get their hands on the new iphone?

It really amazes me the lenghs people will go to get their hands on the new iphone when it comes out. I come here to the forum everyday and i see/read people that cant afford it will shell out $200 + $250 for an early upgrade. Other people stating that they are "hesitant" on buying the iphone full price because they dont have a full upgrade yet but will shell out the money anyways. People asking friends to LEND them some $$$ so they can get the iphone 5. Other people talking $ H I T about the iphone saying how ugly it is, how the screen should of been wider instead of taller, and saying they wont get it because it doesnt have NFC but at the end of the day we all know that they will buy it regardless. I didnt think people were this DESPERATE for a new iphone. I just think its a little ridiculous.

To each his own. When I was younger I was always eager to get the latest thing and lived on the bleeding edge of technology. As soon as a new Intel CPU came out I had to have it and build a new PC around it. It was expensive living that way. Now that I am older and more wise, I don't quite live on that bleeding edge anymore and subsequently, save more money that way.

But I can understand why some folks, typically younger ones I think, want to pay extra for the newest iPhone. It's the allure of the latest thing and a bit of bragging rights in their own eyes.

I was like that as well but what i dont understand are the grown A $ $ men here with families making forums asking people if its a good idea to get the new iphone because they cant really afford it and they already have the 4s. I think if people cant afford it they shouldnt attempt to buy it and instead they should put food on the table for their families.

I agree. But it's their money and their responsibilities to look after - not ours. I'm not going to get worked up over what others do with their funds.

ive gone from ice cream sandwich to jelly bean on my imported GSM gnex? its just more of the same thing. whats the difference between that and iOS being more of the same thing? they all simply add features not change the entire OS

Yeah, but that's 4.0 to 4.1. I know major Android versions are the tenth decimal point, but when comparing 1.5 to 2.1, 2.1 to 2.2 and 2.3, they're definitely changed. Then get blown away by Android 2.3 to 4.0. Total UI overhaul

I think my issue with the iPhone is more the iOS than the phone itself. I might buy an iPhone5 if this can be done, or maybe requires a jailbreak ?

- When I try to swipe to the left screen, a keyboard pops ups ? There is no left screen from the center/home screen ? Whats up with that keyboard coming up, can that be disabled ?

- That center home button is extremely annoying to me, after using the typical 3 buttons at the bottom. Always pressing that thumb button to exit apps, or anything is very difficult to get used to. I think Apple should ditch that big round bottom button altogether.

- Where is the app drawer ? Or are all apps on screen only ? There is no app drawer ?

- Can the iPhone be used as a portable hard drive ? I like to throw files onto my phone, and then bring to the office. Very easy to drag and drop, can the iPhone do that ?

- Widgets are big for me, with jailbreaking, can the iPhone have widgets on the homescreen ?

- LED notification light comes in very handy, if phone is just sitting on my desk, and I walk away for a bit, I can come back to see a missed text in white flashing color, or missed call in blue, or missed e-mail in green. I really like that feature, it's simple, but nice to have, without having to pick up the phone and turn the screen on to see if I have missed something.

- Google Maps GPS is huge for me, I use it every day. With Google Now, I can speak into the phone the name of a restaurant, and it will pop up immediately, and then it will open up navigation right away, and start speaking the directions to me. Can the iPhone do that ? I honestly do not know.

For those of who say its a single device vs so many Androids, its because Apple doesn't give people a choice, they are forced to use that device to have the latest and greatest iPhone.
if apple started releasing multiple versions of the iPhone of different size screens, its not like they would all of a sudden gain a million more users. Likewise, if only the nexus phones were sold, Android wouldnt see a dramatic decrease in users.

There has been this amount of hype about every phone. There will always be. It is a big event for us technology lovers.

I honestly do not understand the crazy hype and media surrounding the upcoming iPhone5 ? I owned the first two iPhone's, thought they were crazy cool then, like from StarTrek future, but then I got bored when the 3GS was just more of the same, and moved on to the Nexus-One...then the Nexus-S 4G...now the Galaxy Nexus. I am open to going back to an iPhone, but to me it still looks and feels like the original from five years ago. I am open to going back to an iPhone, but not if it is just more of the same again.

Not trying to start a flame war here, honestly want to know why everyone is freaking out over the iPhone5, where to me, it seems like the same old, same old as the iPhone4, just slightly different at best, but basically the same design for a third year in a row. Where is the Apple innovation, or "magical" design, they were known for ?

The taller iPhone4 known as the iPhone5, looks absolutely ridiculous and silly. Looks like a Hershey's candy bar. Oh wow, so now, it will allow a 6th row of app icons LOL, amazing Apple will pass this off as all new and magical, and the Sheep will buy it in droves still.

iOS6 still looks so outdated, like from 2007, no widgets yet, no LED notification light, like BlackBerry has had for years. No live app icons like Windows Phone 8. The OS still has that lame Fischer Price toy theme. It's a kiddy phone.

Now they make the iPhone 4 a hair taller, and razor thin, but no bigger battery. Why not keep it the same thickness as the iPhone4, but stuff in a much larger battery ?

And these leaks for the iPhone5 have been everywhere this Summer. How will Tim Cook surprise us, when he reveals the phone millions of us have seen already. Doubling down on secrecy, LOL.

I will eat my words, if Apple reveals a truly original design, like 4.3" screen, with a shape no one has a leak of yet, but highly doubtful.

So you do realize that the physical size of the iPhone 5 screen and the phone are nearly the same as your 4" Nexus S 4G? LOL ;)

It's not clear why you the call it ridiculous and silly?

And many others would disagree.

Are there more people in the 'it's useless' camp than those who say it's useful? I can't say for certain, but I'd wager not, especially if there's an option to turn it off.

Yes. I didn't say that there wouldn't be others that would disagree with what I think. Whether people want the LED notification light or not, I don't see Apple using it right now or in the near future.

If you want a jailbroken device, I suggest the 4S. It could take weeks or months for a totally new processor like that in the iPhone 5 to be jailbroken. I know I had to wait 9 months or something for my iPad's processor, and it wasn't even selling out in stores after a week or two... the iPhone may, and if the right hacker guys can't get ahold of iPhone 5s, it'll take even longer.
- When I try to swipe to the left screen, a keyboard pops ups ? There is no left screen from the center/home screen ? Whats up with that keyboard coming up, can that be disabled ?
That's because when you swipe to the left from the first screen, it goes to the search screen, and when you search, you type. Whereas Android's screens are centered and have other screens flanking it, iOS screens go from left to right and expand to the right.
- That center home button is extremely annoying to me, after using the typical 3 buttons at the bottom. Always pressing that thumb button to exit apps, or anything is very difficult to get used to. I think Apple should ditch that big round bottom button altogether.
But it does everything you need. Click once to exit an app. Click again to go to the 1st home screen. Double-click (in an app or in any home screen) to open or switch between other recent apps, and swipe them to the right to control audio and other quick settings. Hold for Siri. Etc. And you can change all of these triggers with add-ons in Cydia when you jailbreak.
- Where is the app drawer ? Or are all apps on screen only ? There is no app drawer ?
There is no app drawer. The home screens are the app drawer, but basically you can organize them, whereas the Android app drawer you can't do anything with. It's like the best of both worlds.
- Can the iPhone be used as a portable hard drive ? I like to throw files onto my phone, and then bring to the office. Very easy to drag and drop, can the iPhone do that ?
Yes. With apps you can use it as a usb drive, and also to an extent iCloud, depending on the apps you're using. Though generally it'd be smarter to use a cheap USB thumb drive on a keychain, or else just get a dropbox.
- Widgets are big for me, with jailbreaking, can the iPhone have widgets on the homescreen ?
Widgets are big for you because apps in Android suck, as well as battery management. There are no need for copious widgets for fussing with settings constantly. You want to go into apps for things like calendar-editing, and just use the built-in notifications (they're pretty configurable) which pop up on the lock screen and in the notification drawer to notify you. The notification drawer also has weather, stocks, alerts from your apps. It ends up being the best of all worlds. Just click on a weather app for a much more immersive, quality experience in figuring out the weather... and apply the same logic to any other widget you think you'll miss from Android. Also, Siri is great for quick information if you don't even have the ability to tap on an app, like when you're driving.
It's kinda nice that there are two buttons on an iPhone that do trigger the screen to wake up. But if that isn't convenient enough for you or you don't want to turn the screen on, there is a feature which makes the camera (backside) LED flash when you get a notification in the accessibility settings. Other than that, don't you usually turn on your screen to check if you see the LED flashing? I don't get what that accomplishes other than being able to ignore it if it's just an email and you don't care about emails... but the same is true for iPhone, you can just ignore your phone the same way, lol.
- Google Maps GPS is huge for me, I use it every day. With Google Now, I can speak into the phone the name of a restaurant, and it will pop up immediately, and then it will open up navigation right away, and start speaking the directions to me. Can the iPhone do that ? I honestly do not know.
GPS currently isn't exactly turn-by-turn like Google Nav, but there is maps routing. iOS 6 will bring full navigation. And Google Now is sort of like an overcomplicated Siri/notifications. Between Siri taking care of your impromptu thoughts, maps/navigation, apps like OpenTable, and the Notifications app/service having geolocation proximity reminders, I think you'll find scenarios like wanting to dine out will be well-handled by your smartphone.

Are you talking about a phone which I've never heard about, or are you just being your usual iFanboy self and bashing Android devices again, despite the fact that it's evident that you've never used one?

You assume wrong. You think one does not know, when really they've learned to know better.

But from what I am seeing, it just looks like an iPhone4 only taller and thinner, and that's it.
So how long have you had vision problems? Maybe you should go get your eyes checked by a qualified optometrist.

reinvent the damn thing dont just slap a bigger screen on it , add a chip here and there
These types of statements are ignorant. 4s to i5 is a greater change than 3GS to i4.

Oh, I agree that we probably won't be seeing a notification LED on an iPhone for another few years (if ever). I'm merely saying that while there may be someone who don't like Feature X, there is likely another person who does.

You assume wrong.

Right then. Please explain what 'bugs' you've experienced during your extensive use of the Android OS, then, as I haven't been able to find any (apart from the occasional crash and hang, which isn't dissimilar to my experience with iOS).

I've been using Android since the original HTC Dream and iOS since the original iPhone (started off on 1.0.2- not a Day 1 person unfortunately), so it certainly isn't because I started using either OS before/after they evolved from their initial versions.

You think one does not know, when really they've learned to know better.

That's deep but unfortunately irrelevant.

I can see how that'd be relevant here if what you were saying were true though.

I am bored with Android now, Jellybean is near perfect, and to me Android is nearly complete, now to move onto something fresh and original again. I think the upcoming Nokia Windows Phone 8 does looks pretty different, might go that route.

I would happily go back to the iPhone if they change and add this;
- 4.3" screen
- Widgets allowed on the homescreen
- LED notification light, like BlackBerry
- Live app icons, like the weather icon would show today's true temp.

Apple could make the iPhone the best device in the world and crush both Android and Windows if they did this. Or offer two different phones, a smaller 3.5" still, and a larger device. Widgets can be options, if you don't want them, don't use.

PLEASE stay with Android. Those will never happen to the iPhone for now, only perhaps in the future. I sincerely don't want you to come back to the forums and post another thread, ''Bored with the iPhone, went back to Android''.
LED notification light, to me, is too subtle for usability. The light would just blink continuously. I would rather click the home button and see ALL the notifications I have, all lined up one by one in the lock screen. Its even better, as you can view almost all of them at one glance. The notification light offers not much use as it does not tell you what exactly you have received. It only tells you does you have a notification. For the iPhone, its the phone's display and vibration and to me that is more than enough.

I am very curious as to what Apple will unveil next week ? Will it be the leaked stretched out thinner iPhone4 design ? Or a whole new design kept under wraps all this time, and that stretched out leak is a ruse fake body to fool everyone ?

Likewise, if only the nexus phones were sold, Android wouldnt see a dramatic decrease in users.

I disagree with this statement. Android's main sales advantage is it's lower price points and wider distribution. If they only released top of the line models such as the Nexus, Android would have a fraction of it's current market share.

I agree the people that argue that it's a single device vs many devices are missing the point. It's not the number of models that the iPhone is competing against, it's the lower price points that some of those models are sold at. Plus, Android devices are available in so many additional markets.

As it stands, I am very satisfied with my 4S. I can wait it out a month or two to see if I can buy one sans contract for cheaper (I did the same with the past 2 iphones). I am not super excited for the iphone 5 based on what I see thus far. Slight updates to an already great phone.

Alot of my friends have the standard iphone 4 from 2 yrs ago. They are counting the seconds until they can buy the new iphone. Can you blame them? I just feel that some 4S owners may be very happy with what they currently have.

I have an iPhone 4 and so far I haven't seen anything (yet?) that makes me desire an iPhone 5.

I'm excited because I've had the 4 since launch day and am ready for a new phone! Fresh from the box.... Oh yes!
