You have that choice now, buy the phone made by Apple or buy any other phone on the market.

How is that so hard for folks to grasp, the iPhone is what it is and if you do not like it then do not buy it.

Thats what I did...

The Galaxy Nexus is 4.65" a perfect size and shape for a mobile device.
Add to that it's text reflow allows for vertical use 99% of the time.

The rumored slightly longer iPhone looks too small at least for those who have been using bigger devices for the last year. I hope soon Apple will also offer a larger device and let buyer choose.

I was talking about the Nexus S, that was released early last year, as some one was saying that one had a wider screen. But they should be the same, both 4" with 16x9 ratios.

As for the Galaxy Nexus, I personally feel that 4.3" is the perfect size for a mobile phone, its still narrow enough that its comfortable when using as a phone, though if your only going to use it as a mini tablet, then I agree, one of reasons I really liked my One X. Though I personally hate text reflow, it breaks up the page layout.

I am bored with Android now, Jellybean is near perfect, and to me Android is nearly complete, now to move onto something fresh and original again. I think the upcoming Nokia Windows Phone 8 does looks pretty different, might go that route.

I would happily go back to the iPhone if they change and add this;
- 4.3" screen
- Widgets allowed on the homescreen
- LED notification light, like BlackBerry
- Live app icons, like the weather icon would show today's true temp.

Apple could make the iPhone the best device in the world and crush both Android and Windows if they did this. Or offer two different phones, a smaller 3.5" still, and a larger device. Widgets can be options, if you don't want them, don't use.

I'm hyped for the iPhone 5 because Apple is a really interesting company with a proven history to influence and move the industry, market, and culture in significant ways. It has nothing to do with fanboyism.

Apple also has a trend of making high quality and innovative products, so it's exciting to see if they can do it again.

How is it that people can't understand this?! Apple as a company has literally changed the world (by way of consumer electronics)...multiple times. Since (s)he who rules technology (specifically consumer electronics) rules the world, and curently Apple is king, is it any wonder that there's an entire industry dedicated to just speculating what's coming next from Apple? It's like we get to see what direction the entire electronics industry as a whole will be taking. For example, before the iPhone 4, who gave a flying fly about pixel density?! It was all about raw resolution.

PS: Love your handle!

I've never had an iphone, but am thinking about the new one since Apple's marketing is genius. I've had an Android phone since they came out (G1, Nexus One, Thunderbolt now) and am like 99% leaning towards the Galaxy S3, but I will wait to see what the iphone 5 specs are.. what frustrates me is that if HTC or Samsung is coming out with a phone, you will know the specs MONTHS in advance.. whereas Apple keeps things secret somehow and I don't find out until it's released.

It does not help my impulse purchase habits! :D

I am on an unlimited LTE data plan from VZW (I absolutely refuse tiered data) so I'm going to pay full price for whatever the BEST phone is come launch time.

Iphones seem to have better battery life (e.g. 4S compared to my TBolt), but there's still no 4G LTE.. absolute deal breaker for me... but I'm sure the 5 will have it.

The one thing I'm so used to with android is the ability to root my phone and do.. well whatever I want ;).. I know people JB their iphones but I haven't seen the same capabilities such as modifying clock speed, unlocking wireless hotspots, etc...

Apple really needs to impress me to get my $ (although I do have an ipad 2 which I love).

I agree with this statement. Apple could easily destroy competition.

However, adding some of these things would decrease the smoothness of iOS. When I jailbreak my phone and add some of these things. I notice the difference it causes immediately (same with using the GS3 and adding more and more widgets).

I really don't think people care that much about an LED Notification light.

I didn't care either, until I started using the GS3. It is nice to be able to glance over at the phone and see that I missed a message/email/call with out having to click the home or lock button to light up the screen on the iPhone for it to show me.

I think the rumor iPhone design blows. :)

LOL, I like the iPhone 4/4S form factor, so for me... its the only taller and the two tone part that gets me. I still prefer the smoothness of iOS, the quality of the iPhone, and the Apple Ecosystem.

So even though I am not crazy about the design. I will still prefer it over the other phones.

Even if they added these features people would still bitch and moan about how much better another mobile OS is. Bottom line: Get what works for you. If the above things are essential to your smartphone experience, then iOS is not for you.

I honestly do not understand the crazy hype and media surrounding the upcoming iPhone5 ? I owned the first two iPhone's, thought they were crazy cool then, like from StarTrek future, but then I got bored when the 3GS was just more of the same, and moved on to the Nexus-One...then the Nexus-S 4G...now the Galaxy Nexus. I am open to going back to an iPhone, but to me it still looks and feels like the original from five years ago. I am open to going back to an iPhone, but not if it is just more of the same again.

Not trying to start a flame war here, honestly want to know why everyone is freaking out over the iPhone5, where to me, it seems like the same old, same old as the iPhone4, just slightly different at best, but basically the same design for a third year in a row. Where is the Apple innovation, or "magical" design, they were known for ?

The taller iPhone4 known as the iPhone5, looks absolutely ridiculous and silly. Looks like a Hershey's candy bar. Oh wow, so now, it will allow a 6th row of app icons LOL, amazing Apple will pass this off as all new and magical, and the Sheep will buy it in droves still.

iOS6 still looks so outdated, like from 2007, no widgets yet, no LED notification light, like BlackBerry has had for years. No live app icons like Windows Phone 8. The OS still has that lame Fischer Price toy theme. It's a kiddy phone.

Now they make the iPhone 4 a hair taller, and razor thin, but no bigger battery. Why not keep it the same thickness as the iPhone4, but stuff in a much larger battery ?

And these leaks for the iPhone5 have been everywhere this Summer. How will Tim Cook surprise us, when he reveals the phone millions of us have seen already. Doubling down on secrecy, LOL.

I will eat my words, if Apple reveals a truly original design, like 4.3" screen, with a shape no one has a leak of yet, but highly doubtful.

I understand you to a certain degree but calling th OS a Fisher Price thing is plain ridiculous. I love my iPhone and for comparison sake try to use the Galaxy SIII and Note for a While. My first encounter with these Android device was that it breaths and feels plastic and mediocre as hell. That Amoled screen is just the most artificial, candy coated toy screen I have ever seen, now these could be sold at Toys r Us. All those messy, poor designed widgets complete the cheap look that most Samsung devices have. On professional level, managers and higher staff uses an iPhone. Now why should they do that if they according to you looked like a fisher price phone. It's interior and exterior are clean and neat for whole lot of people who enjoy great design and usabilty. Sure there are things that could get better but in comparison with the competition it's still way ahead of his competitors. When is the last Samsung, Nokia or MS awed you?!

The hype is just because Apple is the only company who continuely has given Tech a certain level of awesomeness with it's events. If you'd be thinking clear, you should know strategic and marketing wise they can't afford to put all their innovations right away in the next iPhone. I also am not that fond of that longer looking iPhone. But I trust Apple in this they will come up with a nice and neat looking phone again. You can complain and nag on them what you want but these guys know what they are doing. Make critics like you shut their mouths, that is there core business.

The Galaxy Nexus with Jellybean is a very mature looking device, and runs smooth and fast as hell, with great battery life. The HTC-One X looks very cool too, and the brand new Nokia Lumia 920 just announced today, looks very fresh and original.

And the iPhone5 release will not shut up people like me, we just LOL at all the people who buy into the Apple reality distortion field, and buy into the hype. iOS6 is not bringing anything new to the table, that Android hasn't already had for years.

I think I am looking for a phone that will never exist. Would love to see a phone built by Apple, with their industrial high quality design, running Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie, with Motorola MAXX battery tech and Motorola radios, and have the Windows 8 Phone live tile theme.

I agree on HTC and Nokia trying following their own unique policy instead of companies like Samsung, that are only in it for the money.

Now tell me what did Google exactly gave us the last two years that was so groundbreaking on design or usability. And don't start about that 1 mhz or 30 minutes longer battery life crap, so tell me what?

Like I said, I am not perse for Apple only if others can bring nice and mentionable features that can change things for the better, I'm ok with them. Thats why I tried those other devices but honest to say, they simply didn't impress me.

A company like Samsung does nothing out of love for Tech, it's all about the money for them. Just a bunch of marketeers who try pick the pockets brainless people who aparently love cheap materials, by ads and other lame campaigns, to believe that their iPhone ripoff is a device for Humans only, fricking laughable. Look at their ads, their ******** everywhere. A good product doesn't need a ******** of ads, it sells itself.

I love your comparison to BlackBerry... Because that company is doing so well...

Out in the wider world there is no hype about the new iPhone. The hype is amongst techies and aficionados. My buddy bought a 4s two weeks ago and has no idea that the next iPhone is around the corner.

I think the OP has a point and it's a shame so many posts are defensive rather than discussing the issue. I certainly don't think the 'go away if you don't like it' type posts are helpful for anyone. Surely we're all here for our love of technology, does that mean we have to remain uncritical of Apple if people see shortcoming's with their products? Without criticism and positive suggestion it's difficult to get, or expect, future innovation.

Someone made a good point that there is hype around Apple as they have always been innovator's and creators of great tech which I absolutely agree with, just look at the amount of times Apple have come up with some great, world changing innovations: iPod, iMac, iPhone, iPad, MacBook Air etc.. all great products worthy of the hype.

That's why I struggle with the iPhone 5 hype, where is the innovation? It's another iterative step forward at best. When the iPhone came out, there was nothing else like it and I'd happily say the iPhone 3G was probably the greatest phone ever released but with the yearly updates and increased competition, Apple are losing the innovation. I've never been a fan of spec's for spec's sake but with the same (or closely
similar) OS, Camera, Form factor, Screen Size etc.. there doesn't seem to be any push for innovation any more, and that is why I don't understand the hype.

IOS was a slick, groundbreaking, stable OS but it is several years old and is starting to look is age. The retina display is pin sharp but again, compared to more recent offerings, the size of the screen is starting to feel limited and dated.

I love Apple products, my iMac and MacBook have been fantastic, stylish and much more reliable than any Window's PC I've owned. I also loved my iPhone 3GS but after using an S3 and a Galaxy Note (which I personally think is an innovation in itself, and a form factor that has serious potential) I just can't get excited about the iPhone 5 and certainly can't see me buying another iPhone in the coming months when I finally get around to replacing my ailing 3GS.

The fact that you think the 3GS is "more of the same" compared to the 2G/3G shows your understanding.

The 3GS is the first "modern" iPhone with an A8 processor and integrated PowerVR graphics.
Its like going from a IIVX to a PowerMac G5. There is no comparison.

I don't buy a phone to "look cool" or "tinker with", I buy a phone that "just works" and to be productive. The iPhone does all of that out of the box.

I also find it funny when people complaining they have to jailbreak their iPhones to get features of Android when the fact of the matter is to get those features you have to "root" your Android phone.

Laughable indeed.

(Widgets are optional, you are just too lazy to exercise that option. Or you just like bitching and have no intention of ever following through and are just rolling an Apple message board.)

LOL, android is near perfect eh...what a fanboy
Your perfect must be pretty flawed; as far as I know, the S3 still lags (yea.. on a quad core with 1GB ram) and your little JB project butter simply shoots up the CPU to 100% to achieve a still-not-so-ios-butter-smooth animation.

That's why I struggle with the iPhone 5 hype, where is the innovation? It's another iterative step forward at best.

What kinds of non-iterative innovations would you like to see in the iPhone 5?

An increased screen size, vertically, horizontally, or both, is hardly an innovation. It's iterative.

5 years after its inception, what can Apple really do that isn't iterative? Every model theyve released has been a nudge, not a leap. They can add things that other phones have...haptic feedback, LED notifications, OLED display (yuck), etc., but those things aren't innovative any more. (of course Apple would try to spin these as their own inventions)

With a touch screen phone, there's only so big it can be. It can get only so thin. Current battery technology has its limitations. The screen can only have so many pixels, for now.

As for widgets, etc., it seems to me that's a different topic. IOS could use a facelift for sure. But at the end of the day, if you're bored with the iPhone, I submit you're really just bored with your apps. Because the iPhone is pretty much just a blank slate. Apps bring it to life.

Hahaha we had an obsessed guy in work like you, we used to laugh at him. Sorry :/

EDIT: Oh and Android users always bang on about how iPhone users just buy into the hype and are iSheep etc, but I have never seen a more obsessed bunch of people than Fandroids. Honestly. Hence the reason you are here, on an Apple forum, preaching the Android word to anyone who will listen in the hope of converting them. At the end of the day it comes off as desperate, but hey, if you enjoy it crack on!

Might as well make that 4 years in a row, cos based on history the next phone will be the 5S. That means in the Summer of 2014 people will still be holding in their hands the latest and greatest Apple phone that was designed in 2010 and has barely changed.

(Widgets are optional, you are just too lazy to exercise that option. Or you just like bitching and have no intention of ever following through and are just rolling an Apple message board.)

An Android can do more out of the box than a jailbroken iPhone. sideloading apps, changing default apps (biggy, do you actually like safari?). This includes the launcher (which iOS cannot change even when jailbroken), keyboard, messaging app, dialer app, browser, etc. Android has a computer like file system, where you can download a file, then install an app to execute the file. You can save unrecognizable files to save for when you have a computer. Heck, the iphone doesn't even know what to do with a .zip file! Android also has live wallpapers and jellybean can in fact still use Adobe flash. ANother thing that is stupid is that when you put an icon somewhere, it flings back to just after the app shown. On Android, you can put an icon anywhere on the grid AND your homescreen is completely personalized, since you only put the apps you want on it, the others are hidden in an app drawer. IOS the best thing you can do is hide unused apps in a folder
And will idiots STOP saying jailbreaking is to iPhone as rooting is to Android ???? rooting is gaining the ability to access and modify system files and jailbreaking is modifying the kernel with some patches

Look son, when you root your android, you can install a custom recovery, install a custom ROM, block all ads, remove system (preinstalled) apps, kick people off a wifi network with wifikill, change the settings apps (and all system apps), overclock/underclock, backup all apps and data and transfer those saved game files to another device with titanium backup, and way more. IOS can't do **** so **** fanboys.

Want to know my history? I used to follow apple and it was all iphone this iPhone that. My first smart device was an ipod touch. Later that year, I got a Motorola cliq. First Android by Motorola, had the crappiest specs, screen size, and boy did it lag. Needless to say, I gave my ipod touch 4g to my sister and said I'm all Android. The system simply does so much more.
I also tried WP 7 at one point, but the only thing I like about it was the keyboard and its fluidity.
so no I'm not a blind fanboy who just says I own an Android and I love it. I've had a taste of all 3 major mobile operating systems.

One last comment, about Samsung being plastic, yes its cheap, but it makes the phone so much thinner and lighter. It's still a better option than glass, which will crack when you drop the phone, but Samsung will just get badly scratched.
And stop bashing Samsung, if this was a true debate about the OS itself then those wouldn't matter. Just for the sake of it, I'm going to throw up the newly announced Droid razr HD and maxx HD and razr m. All metal and a kevlar back.
HTC phones with the aluminum back. Etc etc. Samsung is probably the worst company as far as build quality

MacRumors open a new forum to discuss why you prefer alternatives to the iPhone.

This is where I stopped reading. All his opinions are now null and void.

The hype for me....

I simply want the new phone.

I have the 4S with iOS6 atm, I just want the newer hardware. Hopefully a newer camera.

For me the iPhone simply does all of the things I want it to do. Could an Android do more? It probably could but I personally don't want or need more than what I do with mine now. I'm not knocking the competition I just prefer the iPhone. Just as when I was truck shopping, I liked the GMC truck and it can pretty much do everything mine can, I just preferred the Ford.

Done.

ive gone from ice cream sandwich to jelly bean on my imported GSM gnex? its just more of the same thing. whats the difference between that and iOS being more of the same thing? they all simply add features not change the entire OS

Exactly. I don't care about some dumb blinking light. I have no use for it. Many others would agree.

And many others would disagree.

Are there more people in the 'it's useless' camp than those who say it's useful? I can't say for certain, but I'd wager not, especially if there's an option to turn it off.

The implication being if you were hyped about a platter phone with crap, buggy software that you'd be an inherently smarter person...

Are you talking about a phone which I've never heard about, or are you just being your usual iFanboy self and bashing Android devices again, despite the fact that it's evident that you've never used one?

every 3 months

No, Samsung only releases a new flagship Galaxy S series device about once every year.

Galaxy S- Mar 2010
Galaxy S II- Feb 2011
Galaxy S III- May 2012
