I'm sure we will have smurfy new macs with SB out soon enough and I for one can't wait :) But please Mr Ives don't let them get any thinner and please don't take the optical drive out just yet!

You have no rights and you are not being exploited... why the drama?
Yes, you have a voice... vote with your $$
If Apple does not give you what you want, buy something else
It really is that simple

If HP has what you want... then buy it
Why demand that Apple have what HP has?
Just by the damn HP

I never understand why people want to turn a MBP into an Alienware laptop
If that is what you want, buy it and leave my MBP alone

It would be like walking into McDonalds and asking for a Whopper

Counter Person: May I help you?

Me: I'd like a Whopper, fries and a shake

Counter Person: I'm sorry sir, we don't serve Whoppers, but we have the Big Mac

Me: Does it have tomatoes and mayo and a quarter pound of beef?

Counter Person: No, it has two all beef patties, special sauce, pickles, onions and a sesame seed bun

Me: Hmmm, sounds... old... I'll have a Whopper, thanks

Counter Person: But sir, we don't sell Whoppers

Me: I want to see the Manager

Manager: Can I help you?

Me: I demand you make me a Whopper

Manager: Sir, we don't sell Whoppers, but you can get one next door at Burger King

Me: I want a McDonald's Whopper and I want it NOW

Manager: Sir, we don't sell Whoppers, if you want a Whopper, you have to go to Burger King

Me: I am not going to stand for you selling inferior burgers to the Whopper. I am tired of being exploited at McDonalds with this crap you call a burger. I demand you stay up with current trends and sell me a Whopper.

Manager: NEXT!

...coming from working in Food service management for most of my life = this was ***** excellent = we get people in like this all the time :D:eek::D

Thank you MacDawg!

Most of you seem to think the Mac is worth it almost entirely because of the experience. Agreed, no argument. What I don't get is why you feel like this makes it okay to put sub-par components in the notebook. A good user experience doesn't require cutting back on the parts inside. There is no reason why we cannot have a good OS, build quality and customer service with high performance components all at the same time.

When Apple comes out with a refresh, Mac is pretty good value even considering the seemingly lower spec compared to PC counterparts at similar price. But the problem is that Apple usually keeps them at the same price until the next refresh comes out, and that is why some people accuses Apple of being a rip-off.

Lightyears behind? With FW800, unibody, displayport, multitouch. Just because current MBP have Core 2 Duo does't mean they are suitable for 99% of users.

Anyway as you probably know, MacBook Pro are going to be updated soon but even if you buy one now, they are very good machines. I don't care and i don't know what you do with a computer but i can assure you most users who check CPU and tech specs usually do little with their machines.

Sandy b is the latest greatest - you just gota have it. When you pay that kind of money for a notebook, it can't be last season. Imagine buying a duo core now - eww!

True, but even prices even when new are very much higher. My brother just got a new MBP which was USD1899 when when it came out as new a few months ago. I just saw a Sandy Bridge quad core Acer selling for half that. Yes, unibody, battery life and what not but half the price?

When I got my MBP a 2+ years ago, I could spec a PC to the same specs at about 80% the cost and the Apple advantage made the price premium very easily to justify. At 50% it is not so easy.

So...Go buy it then.
No-one here is stopping you. Dell/HP/Compaq/Sony etc. are queing up to take your money so go give it to them...please.

Then you can keep buying the latest/greatest every 3 months or so until you run out of money/the world ends/whatever.

If MS made a more efficient OS then maybe, just maybe, all this horsepower would not be required.

Dammit, I promised myself I wouldn`t keep feeding this pointless thread.

Sub-par? When I think of sub-par I think of cheap and nasty , not reliable, not up to the job....

See:

I enjoy using my mac (MBP) because I feel it has a better construction, better customer service, better user interface(s), and an overall nicer feel.

This is all completely subjective.

I am willing to pay for these subjective qualities in spite of "higher specs" because for 99% of my use of a computer or more - and probably 95%+ of those reading this - the current MBP specs are perfectly fine for what I will do.

I pay extra for the experience types of things and not for specs. If a windows laptop were to compete with apple on the overall experience I may consider purchasing it instead as a result of a cost difference. They don't.

This is why I am now a likely lifetime mac user. It is not the specs. I do not care whether I have the "fastest laptop" if I do not enjoy using it.

The entire premise of this thread is based on faulty assumptions that I, as a mac user, care more about the statistical performance of a laptop I use hours each day than how well I actually enjoy using it.

I just have to ask you this, so as to determine your point of view more accurately regarding CPUs. Having the choice between:

1) Sandy Bridge CPU and HDD
2) Core 2 Duo CPU and SSD

whereas the CPUs have the same clock frequency in GHz, the disks have the same storage in GB and all other sides of either setup (including but not limited to price) are identical, which one do you choose?

core 2 duo

I've had my macbook black for soon to be 4 years, and soon it's time for a new computer... But if not apple get a grip, and upgrade the CPU of the 13" to the i5 & i7 series, i'm going to test out the HP envy series instead! My old MacB. bl. even got a 2,2GHz intel core 2 Duo... The new MacBook 13" just aren't what they should be anymore! :(

There are barely any sandy bridge laptops on the market at the moment. Online they're back ordered to february. On shelves, they simply don't exist.
Also, 90% on sandy bridge mobile CPUs aren't even out. That is, dual core CPUs will be available next month.

What are you talking about then? Except for 13"inchers and airs (for the obvious reasons we all know), Apple sells what nearly everybody is selling now in jan 2011: arrandale laptops.

Big computer stores had them on the shelves 10 days ago ( from Asus ). Not sure if they are still there, because most online shops are out of stock now so they must be selling very fast.

Any way you could link us with that Acer then? I just browsed through Acer's site and I wasn't able to find a laptop with Sandy Bridge CPU. Yes, there were older quads (Clarksfield) for less than 900$ but that is not the same thing as Sandy Bridge. As noted above, the availability of Sandy Bridge laptops appears to be fairly poor. Other OEMs release products even though they know they cannot provide them yet but Apple won't release theirs until they know they can provide them and match the demand.

Pics? Users reviews? Link to 24hrs available shipping online?
And anyway as far as i'm concerned if dell and asus put on their online stores say 50 units just FOR THE SAKE OF IT, sandybridge isn't REALLY out and widely availble and this thread is madness (like the "how many customers apple has lost because of sandy bridge" thread).

And, I repeat, the gross of the CPUs (dual cores) aren't even out.

Shame on acer!!! :) They sell 2009 clarksfield tech!!!
And so does dell on 90% laptops except on the backordered m17x r3.
Dell, hp, acer arrandale/clarksfiels laptops are lightyears behind.

It's in a language you won't be able to read. Like i said, most stores are sold out now. But if you checked maybe 7 to 10 days ago, you could have one since these guys bought it around that date.

This Asus is leading the ranking list of most popular laptops so I highly doubt they only sold 50 laptops.

But I can give you a summary about what users have to say about the Asus Sandy Bridge laptop.

Pro's:

Fast
quiet
cool
Excellent speakers
Great GPU
Optimus
USB 3.0
Lots of memory
Nice Design
Metal/Aluminium
Great screen

Cons:
Slow harddisk
No backlight keyboard
No Blu Ray
Touchpad isn't smooth/sticky

I could use google translate if it's in russian or something.
Anyway, my point is: they're not widely available.
I cannot walk to the store and buy a sandybridge laptop.
Dell only sells 1 model and it's backordered to february.
Stores are full of arrandale/clarksfield PC laptops.
If apple updates MBPs in february/march, they will be on par with the WORLDWIDE (no taiwan and california) WIDE availability of sandybridge laptops.

10 days. Seriously? This is the "lightyears behind". 10 days?
