dumb question, how is every taking screen shots of their phone? i want to show mine off but have no clue. Thanks.

I took my iPhone 3G off the charger at 6:45am this morning when my alarm went off. I did not attach it to a computer or charger all day - first charge was to sync the screenshots. Usually, my phone is at 1/4 battery by 6:30PM when I get off work. I've been amazed all day and I am wondering if the battery meter is somehow not calibrated. But Saturday, as usual, the meter was at 1/4 remaining by 6:30PM and 20% warning by the time I plugged it in at night.

The settings today were:

WiFi: Off
3G: On
Location Services: Off
Push: On, without MobileMe setup
Bluetooth: Off
Brightness: Screenshot attached.

I turned WiFi off yesterday to check dslreports' 3G speed test in my house and forgot to turn it back on.

I always have 3G on, that's why I upgraded to the iPhone 3G. I am a service technician so I drive around San Diego all day. There are a few spots without 3G.

I turned location services off this morning before work because I still get asked if Apps can use my location with it on. I'm not sure what location services are actually used for if it's not a global authorization.

I haven't set up my MobileMe because of all the issues and the fact that I cant reply using my personal address. Therefore, I'm still using my Dreamhost email and checking manually, so I'm not sure if Push is really doing anything.

I've attached my screen brightness page. I didn't realize auto was off until I saw the screenshot. I thought auto-brightness was supposed to improve battery life anyway. I'll keep it off while I check my results tomorrow.

I don't know if something's wrong, but again I made a few changes recently (mentioned above) and my battery life has been amazing all day.

I turned WiFi back on this evening when I went to use Apple's Remote App, everything else will remain the same and I will see what happens tomorrow.

These results were crazy, so I want to verify tomorrow.

The settings tomorrow will be:

WiFi: On
3G: On
Location Services: Off
Push: On, without MobileMe setup
Bluetooth: Off
Brightness: Screenshot attached.

GTFO where the hell can I get your battery? an hour of 3G use and some gameplay puts my iPhone at half way.

Here's one of mine form this weekend. Everything was turned on all day. I had to use the web a lot to learn about the beer I was pouring at a Brewer's Festival.

My question is, couldn't people cheat at this game? I mean if I just charged it a little instead of fully charging it wouldn't the usage jsut continue to grow?

No,because once you plug it in it will display a message saying it has been plugged in since last charge

Getting better each day

After the past 5 days of using my iPhone 3G until it shuts off and charging to full, here are my results.

- Brightness 35-40%
- Location Services = Off
- Wifi = On (30 mins max (office & home))
- Ask to join networks = off (manual wifi search is better for me)
- 3G browsing = 2 hrs total (during commute to and from work and breaks)
- 3G = Always on
- Fetch New Data = Push (only Push email. ave 15/day and reply 50%)
- Auto-Lock = 1 min
- Talk time = 25 mins
- Music = 1.5 hrs (during commute)
- SMS = received 2, sent 4

Charging every other day (almost). ;) I can start plugging it in whenever, now that I've conditioned it.

My usage from 2 days ago through yesterday evening. Phone had only been through 2 full discharges at that point. Went through its 3rd last night. Can't wait to see if it improves any more after a couple more full discharges.

3G: ON
Brightness: 50% (Auto-OFF)
Wi-Fi: OFF
Location: OFF
Push: OFF
Bluetooth: OFF

Usage was a pretty equal mix of phone, video, 3G browsing, texting, apps, etc.

P.S. One thing I have noticed is the battery meters seem to be a little off. I get extensive use after I hit the 20% mark to the point that I'm just waiting for it to die and it won't. Ill try to catch a screen of it just before 20% today, and then another just before it dies to see how much usage I get from 20%-Dead. But for the attached screenshot from 2 days ago, I hit 20% at about 10pm when I was going to sleep, I didn't charge it that night, and the phone didn't die until 2pm the following day at work.

So for those of you that are not letting your phone die and just assuming that red=dead, maybe you should see just how much usage your phone has left in the red. It could just be a meter problem, possibly correctable in 2.1

Edit: Whoops never attached any iPhone screen shots before. Guess I didn't do it right.

How do you guys attach your screenshots as a thumbnail like that? I've been looking with no success, mine attaches as an "attached image."

Use the paperclip looking thing at the top, of the box you type in. (A lot of technical terms there ;)) You should be able to attach it that way as a thumbnail.

Some of these times are simply incredible. Mine isn't off the charts bad, but nothing approaching what some people are getting.

The big killer for me is Push email...if I turn it off my battery life is much, much better. I thought it might be that I get lots of email during the day at work.

Well, I did a little experiment...

First night left Push on and battery took a pretty big hit. Second night turned Push off and battery lost almost nothing.

Here you go, taken about 2 hours ago:
Much better than my last - defective - unit.

Edit: Ok, just noticed I've not changed my Date/Time setting from 'Cupertino' to 'London' yet.
Ignore the display time, it was taken around 3PM GMT.

Edit 2:

Location Services: ON
Push: 15Min/ON
Wifi: OFF
3G: OFF

ok. I am stupid.

How do you guys attach the photo in the camera roll on the post directly from iPhone.
when I hit attachment it won't allow me to load anything from "this computer".

???
thanks

Remember, playing music counts toward the usage time, so it is pretty easy to get numbers in the 15-20 hour range if you use the iPod features a lot.

I am at 3 hours right now with about 80% remaining. 2 days of standby. Mostly texting/wifi use, with a few calls and emails. I have an iPhone Classic with edge and push turned off. Screen brightness is at about 20%. Full bars everywhere I go. Airplane mode is turned on every night while I sleep.

Well it really doesn't matter every screen shot on here is better than mine agreed? Do you guys think I should return my phone?

You are absolutely right. Let's say I have used my iPhone for 8 hours in standby and I have about 50% battery left. If I plug the iPhone and charge it for sometime and unplug it when it has gained battery up to 95% then it has not count as a "full charge" since it didn't get to 100%. I will still have 8 hours of standby time. I actually don't like that because I plug my iPhone to my car to listen to music and it gets charged while playing, then I get home and unplug it at less than 99% and I lose track of the real standby and usage timings.

BTW I just checked my timings and I also have dashes in both, usage and standby even though my phone is not charging.

My Usage at 20% warning. I've been pleased with my results so far, but I'm near a charger all day long at work so a little diff situation than some. PS. it is a 3g but I was at the lake with no coverage.

These usage times are almost irrelivant if you don't specify mixed, web or phone use. If you spend almost all your usage on the phone or ipod it'll last much longer than web browsing or playing games.

Man, I wish I could get usage like some of the pics i've seen! I generally use my phone for a bit of browsing, a bit of talking, but by and large for listening to music in the car. I turn 3G on when I need to use it, but I just usually have wifi on when I'm at home.

No you can't,once you plug in the phone and unplug it there is a message on the screen that says "phone has been plugged in since last full charge"

To the OP:
You have a bad battery. Take it back.

Thanks I will,I just called and made a MG appointment for 7:30pm so wish me luck
