Someone tell me what they think of this logic:

It's very hard to accurately compare the batteries on different iPhones because everyone uses it differently. I might browse the web differently than the person above me. Some features get turned on during the day, screen brightness goes up and down, etc. So we need to make these tests consistent.

My battery life on 3G isn't that great - maybe 3 hours of usage + a day and a half or so of standby time.

But I did an iPod test and got more than 24 hours of usage with the screen off and playing music. You may not get the same results Apple does because you use the phone differently - but surely you can emulate Apple's iPod test pretty simply by just letting it play music til it dies without using it.
Make sense?

Yea.

I got 4 hours today with using GPS for a while and a lot of web.

Yesterday I got 7 hours with calling and no GPS. Its all in the usage (obviously).

These battery tests , although they tell us SOMETHING, aren't that accurate.

Someone whose "better" with computers would drain the battery way faster. The only way to really know if your battery is defective is to do an iPod test. Put a super long play list on at medium volume and turn off the screen. Let it play til it dies. If you get less than like 20 hours, your battery has a problem I would say.

High screen brightness and 3G absolutely MURDER the battery life I find.

I don't know whether or not my battery is OK.

Everyone else seems to get much higher.

4 h 40 minutes usage, 1 day of standby.

Most of the time:

Brightness = lowest
3G = on
Everything else off (i.e. wifi, bt, push, location svc).

For the 4 h 40 minutes, zero iPod use - 90% of the time browsing on 3G, the other 10% talking, and listening to voicemail messages.

Defective or not?

Note that right when it died I plugged it in and took the screenshot, so these numbers aren't exaggerated at all.

Also, note the following:

20% --> 10% took 24 minutes. 10% --> turn off took 49 minutes, so that means from 20% --> turn off took 73 minutes = 1 h 13 minutes.

So if 20% = 1 h 13 minutes, than 100% = around 6 hours. Just a thought...

Ok, here's mine. I had 3g on, not much phone talking 3 email accounts (1 exchange, 2 gmails), location on, some web browsing, app downloading and an hour of music today at the gym.

Here's mine. How can my usage and standby times be identical? Something running in the background draining the battery? Anyone else have this?

Using the GPS functions in the map do too, i used it straight for an hour and found that i lost about 20-25% of my battery.

is my battery okay?

i have written down the past couple days worth of battery usages..

everything turned OFF (3G, wifi, Location services, push, BT, etc)

6 hrs usage
16 hrs 52 minutes stand by 20% mark
(4-5 hours talk time, sent/received 75 text-thats all)

4 hrs usage
14 hours 38 minutes standby 30% mark
(didnt do much this day.. 2 hours at most talk time, but heavy texting)

3 hrs usage
13 hours 21 minutes standby 70% mark
(2 hours talk, sent/received 50 text-thats all)

EDIT: Never mind I figured it out. ;)

Location Services turned on.

3G turned on.

Push disabled.

OMG!!! U have an awesome battery. Normally, I get about 5-6 hours usage and 16-18 hours standby. Push, location, bluetooth all off. 3g/ wifi on for maybe 1/2 the day. I find that I lose too many calls on 3G.

Edge most of the day, except when I was on the other side of town and switched to 3G for a couple hours.

Auto brightness

Location services off

Used lots of email

I don't see how anyone can get 24 hours+ on one charge. I know I sure can't. Irked.

Here's may latest Battery Usage screenshot. This is with everything on using both 3G, Edge, brightness on auto about 25%. Location services on, even used the GPS. This was taken at the 10% warning. Talking on the phone, web surfing, emails (also Push is on). I also have no cracks, the family of unicorns that raised my phone must have taken good care of it:) I also use bluetooth during all waking hours.

4 hours usage and like 10-11hrs standby.

I dont usually turn it off.

Anyone else notice these phones charge REALLY fast?

Mine charges to around 90% in just over an hour, then takes another hour or so to get to 100%. That is of course if the readout is to be trusted :)

I thought my battery was pretty good, but 12 hours use and nearly a day of standby with everything turned on seems phenomenal. I'm going to turn everything on except for location services for the next charge, and see how it goes :)

My settings:
3G off (turned it on from time to time when needed)
WiFi off
Location services off
Auto brightness off
Brightness set at 30-40%

You would think Apple would have the software programmed to automatically turn all of these things on and off depending on whether they are actively being used or not (this mainly applies to location services, WiFi, and 3G). If you are not browsing the web, 3G should automatically turn off. If you open a new browser, it should automatically perform a quick check for WiFi. Otherwise, WiFi should be off). Although a user should be able to manually turn these things on and off, the user shouldn't have to. If a browser is not open, 3G should automatically turn OFF! If you are not looking at google maps or an app that uses GPS, then the location services should automatically turn OFF!
