Last night at work, I left my 3G connected to the USB wall charger starting at around 1am. I got off at 8am and took my phone off, went home and went to sleep. (didn't use the phone at all).

I woke up this morning at around 11am and noticed that I had received ONE text message, and also that my battery was at 10%. What is going on?

This is my THIRD iPhone 3G. The first one I got replaced because it had a cracked plastic shell on the bottom. The second one I got replaced because it had black lines on the screen while on lock, dust under the screen, light leak, and scratches on the metal bezel. Please tell me I don't have to go back to the store again. I'm sick and tired of this BS.

Anyways.. did anyone have something like this happen on their first full charge? Some say that battery calibration will be complete only after a full charge runs out to 0%, and I've done that with my other Apple products in the past. Never did any batteries run out THAT fast on a full first charge.

much better

well I started this thread to see if my battery was bad and as I saw screen shots mine was really bad,So I went to apple and they exchanged mine no problem...below is my phone before and after screen shots... I went from 3.5 hours of standby to 11 with everything turned on but 3g and that was the first day with then new phone

I can tell it's getting better with every charge,I charged it saturday till 7am and it just went dead a 4pm sunday with about 4 hours of usage,I am very happy:D

keep the screen shots coming :)

Were you using the phone for 3 hours straight in your 2nd pic? Your standby time isnt much longer than your usage.

that day, yes I had a full charge took it off the charger and got a phone call a few minutes later...talked the whole way home stuck in traffic and with everything turned off I got only 3 hours of talk before the 10% popped up......

but even before that I would only make it about 4 hours before the phone would die with everything off and no usage :(

Nice job on getting the replacement! Looks like your second one is more normal.

I've been getting 4h 40 minutes around of usage and a day of standby....so our batteries are pretty similar. My usage was mostly web browsing on wifi/3G

Spent the day out shopping, surfing on 3g... as you can see I'm not a phone talker. I'm all about emails and surfing.

My settings are :
3G - Enabled
Brightness - 40 % and auto-adjust
Push Email - Active
Wi-fi when I'm home

oh yes, and GPS on, I did some geocaching today so it's always available

I'm going to take my phone tomorrow to get it looked at. Here's mine after 40 minutes of talking and about an hour of iPod, no 3G surfing.

how long SHOULD your phone be plugged in for it to be considered fully charged? because, like ipods, iphones show up as "fully charged" after about 2-2.5 hours. thx in advance.

Push: Off
3G: On (just turned it off before taking this picture) with AOL Radio On for about 40 minutes
Location: On
Safari: Didn't Use
3 Calls
Couple minutes on iCal

Leave it plugged in until it says "charging complete."
With all battery-powered devices today, if they are more than 50% charged and you unplug them, they will display as fully charged initially. Check back in 30min and you will see a more accurate reading. The only way to know if it truly is fully charged is to leave it plugged in until it says "charging complete."

AHDuke99, your phone looks perfectly fine. 2hrs usage, 14hrs standby and the battery is only 50% depleted. That is Normal.

- From what I've gathered from this thread, the first few times you charge your phone when you first buy it will significantly affect the quality of your battery for the rest of the time that you own it. When you first buy a new iPhone, it is VERY important to charge it all the way up, drain it all the way down, then charge it all the way up, several times. This will ensure that your battery works well in the future.

Here's mine, 3G on but I'm on holiday so DATA ROAMING off..

WiFi is always on and getting frequent use, however not many calls or texts..

I plugged in at this point because I was going to bed, but I reckon I could get another hour of usage out of the thing at least..

I have to say...I'm actually quite impressed with the battery life I'm getting now. This was the 5th full charge, and the 10% warning had just appeared, so still a little left.

My settings are:

3G on
Wifi On but not ask to join networks (only 1 network in the list)
Location services off
Screen around 10-15% with auto on
Push off
Fetch manual

I've made some phone calls, but not many as you can see. Checked my emails on both wifi and 3g. Browsed on both wifi and 3g, and I was connected to one of my machines for around 30mins using Mocha VNC over 3G.

Wher will it say charging complete? Will the words replace the green battery? Because I have never seen it say that, I don't think. And I'm getting 4-6hrs of usage over a 24 hr time-span after charging it overnight (7-8hrs).

If possible, can someone take a screenshot of when it says charging complete?

It never says "charging complete." When it is charging, the battery icon in the upper right has a black lightning bolt in it; when the the charge is complete, it has a black plug in it.

DON'T trust the battery meter to determine whether your phone is fully charged or not. Just as it's inaccurate on the amount remaining, it's also off on the amount of charge when charging. Leave your phone plugged in longer even if the battery indicator indicates "full." I've found a good rule of thumb is at least 3+ hours of uninterrupted charging, overnight is ideal. Debunk if you want, but I am getting consistently good battery times with this method.
My latest:

I normally do full charge/discharge cycles as opposed to just topping the battery off when I get chance, but it's not always convenient. Anyway...I found this article in my feeds this morning debunking common myths of LiIon batteries.

I think I'll start topping off as and when, and just do a full charge/discharge once a fortnight or so.
