Installous shut down= apple stop fighting jailbreak as hard IMHO. it is great for those who really use it to TRY apps. Otherwise Installous blatantly rips off apple and it's developers.

if you cant afford to pay $1-10 for an app maybe you shouldnt own a 600$ device, installous people make me puke, im glad they are being shut down, i use jailbreaks for all the tweaks and unlocks not for pirated apps

I doubt Installous is the biggest thing, it may be apart of it, but I think a lot of it has to do with apple just liking to be in control.

It's more of a control issue like ACardAttack said. Jailbreak opens up the possibility to run all kinds of codes making the OS/device vulnerable.

This has nothing to do with it. I am a Jailbreaker through and through, but if Apple stops closing up the wholes that JB'ers find then I am moving to a new platform. While jailbreakers generally use the exploit only to jailbreak the device, they aren't the only things these can be used for. The JailbreakMe.com sites could have just as easily been pdf's that install keyloggers to get your banking data or a million other uses. Apple has to plug security holes just like every other software company does. I hope that they keep finding ways to jailbreak, but Apple has no choice but to make their platform as secure as they can.

A jailbreak is basically a virus that does good things that we want rather than bad things we don't.

so if apple stops closing the holes? that would be a good thing actually. if they stopped closing holes then the exploit found for 5.0.1 would probably be the last jailbreak needed for the 4, and 4S. in all honesty, i know what you meant.

While installous doesnt likely have more to with apple wanting to stop JB more than any other cydia tweak i dont think it would be smart of apple to put a complete end to jailbreak. why? because where would we get new features for future iOS updates? Think Mobile notifier.

I dont think it would be smart for apple either but for a different reason. The jailbreakers actually are working for apple for free. Instead of having their employees look for security holes in the software the jailbreakers do it for free. Then apple just has to find out what the jailbreakers are exploiting and fix it.

If you believe the majority of people who use it, do so to "try apps" then go and genuinely buy them, then you're being a little naive. I would put those kind of people in the 0.1% ratio, because it exists for one reason alone, and that's to pirate apps. I'm just surprised it's taken Apple this long to focus on Installous and Apptracker.

Although, don't think for one second that killing Installous will mean Apple will relax it's stance on jailbreaking. While I'm sure Scott Forstall has a look at some of the tweaks the community come up with (Zephyr for example is a UI tweak I would expect to see Apple implement in the future), Apple's issue with jailbreaking is that in hinders the security of the device, and Apple is all about security, that closed system, and I agree with that.

Only if it was that simple. Shutting down Installous is just one of the issues.

I would not oppose shutting down installous, as it has no positive value for the JB community. It is just a bootleg app store. I can understand a couple of years ago when apps were coming out and costing $5 so nobody wanted to shed the money. Now many popular apps are $0.99 and the apps that are now $5 sometimes get reduced after being out for a while.

The solution for people that geniunely use Installous to try out apps (even if it is 1%) would probably be for Apple to allow you to download the FULL VERSION of the App and give you 12 or 24 hours to "test drive". If you like it you will be charged after that trial period, but if you delete it you will not be charged.

I feel bad for the first batch of people who pay and try out a new app just to find out it is crappy. Thankfully they let us know in the review section.

I don't believe that for one second. I'll admit I've downloaded a few, and tried them but I've got well over 200 paid apps, ranging from $.99-$59.99 and lots of them with IAP, not to mention once line wore shut down I've bought something to the tune of 1500 songs. This is one reason I truly, truly want jailbreak to keep on happening. I think
It will, somehow- survive. I have got so much invested in apple ecosystem, not To mention l bought my 4S outright. A 32GB one- which if I recall was over $820.00 with taxes, but without just the few JB tweaks I can't stay with iOS forever. I've had and used plenty of androids and I've probably gotten several hundred invested in its apps. I just like the overall integration in the apple ecosystem.

Test drive idea sounds like a good idea. Alternatively it would put a stop to crap apps.

I'm on an iPhone 4 running 4.something. Can I still upgrade to iOS 5.0.1 to do the jailbreak? Has the window closed yet?

So is the iphone 4 running 4.3.3 the only one that can be unlocked?

In order for an iPhone 4 to be unlocked, it must have had it's original baseband preserved from iOS 4.0.X (01.59.00) all the way through 4.3.3. Or, if on 4.3.3, you may preserve the current baseband and use Gevey.

Upgrade to 5.0.1 ASAP. The window will be closed when 5.1 is released.

If they would allow test-driving the app I would not use installous. The apps I like I buy, I like to support the devs, I just find utterly frustrating shedding money for a app that after 1m I see that I don't like. Reviews are nice, but everybody is different, so it doesn't guarantee that I will like.

This.

It doesn't matter how you sugarcoat it, 95% of all jailbreakers use installous for the free apps. As for people talking about how installous takes money away from Apple, you have to consider the fact that the user wouldn't buy apps anyways so if they are free, might as well get them. Installous via Jailbreaking enticed me to go iOS instead of android.

Where is your data and proof to back up those numbers?
