All is fine now

Just signed up to give a small feedback.

I was on 5.01 not jailbroken and preserved baseband 4.10.08.
I was reading all problems in this thread and decided to take the risk to jailbreak.

I have done that only to use Mywi but I also am one of the lucky ones that bought tether when it was available in the appstore.

My phone is unlocked with a gevey what makes restarting not an easy task.

First it took longer than normally to get Cydia updated but it’s logical cause of the massive use at the moment.
Than I tried to install MYWI but got lots of missing files message, some I found but for libstatusbar I had to switch to developer in my user profile. (manage-settings)
Than I had some gateway timeouts failures, think the server was overloaded.
Once MYWI installed it wanted to respring and stuck in the circle not moving anymore.

I had to force a restart and than (after the gevey 112 etc.) all was fine but had to configured the cellular data network APN again.

After that the phone works like I’m customed and with my beloved MYWI working.

Thanks pod2G for sharing the hard work on the jailbreak.

^^those problems are not from the jailbreak.... those are from servers getting slammed. This happens every time a new jailbreak is released. Please, don't blame this on the jailbreak.

And the problems like iTunes error 1600 is usually due to the user not doing something properly when jailbreaking.

There is no "problem" with the jailbreak itself that you are risking anything. You can always get a phone into dfu and restore to stock, so you are never risking your phone by doing a jailbreak.

Please, don't blame this on the jailbreak.

...., so you are never risking your phone by doing a jailbreak.

I didn't blame nobody and nothing, I just tried to give a feedback on what happened to me and thought it might be helpful for others.

As I said, all is fine with my phone after two hours or so, breakfast included.

No, you won't brick a phone jailbreaking but it cost extra time (time is money someone said) to restore and configurate it and you might lose some pics or other info.

Please don't interprete my post wrong, thanks again.

you said "i read about the problems with the jailbreak and decided to risk it anyways"

There is no more risk with this jailbreak than there ever has been, and the problems in this thread have nothing to do with a jailbreak that is my point. Don't say "problems with the jailbreak"

People having trouble downloading things because somebodys servers went down and cydia can't get the required packages is NOT THE JAILBREAKS FAULT. That was my point, I never said you claimed to have problems... I simply said don't blame, or infer blame, on the jailbreak.

Wow, here like in most public forums is always someone who picks on newbees.

I’m a passed 50 years old bizman and know what I said/wrote.

Can you point me to the problem with the jailbreak I posted?

Again, my post was a positive feedback, nothing else.

Goodbye

way to play the victim bud. its because we see this everyday bud.

I think you'll recover if you see some repitition in your life. No need to act like a bitter teenager when you see questions you don't agree with.

Bitter teenager is not directed at you, BTW. Juts a generalization of Some the angry posters here. not all. Some.

I wasn't picking on you... i'm posting information for people to read.

There are a lot of people around here that struggle with reading comprehension.

So when you post things like "problems with the jailbreak" you are automatically making people assume that the jailbreak is broken and will cause problems with their device, whether those are your intentions or not.

Again, the problems, that you reference and which are mentioned in this thread (incomplete cydia packages, iTunes error 16xx, etc.) have NOTHING to do with the jailbreak itself.

Glad that after 50 years you still think you're being "picked on" because of the way YOU worded your post.

this forum is full of elitist attitudes and instead of being helpful, the vast majority revel in put downs and attacks. Just read through the various sub forums and how many fights, arguments break out over nothing.

I tell people about this forum, to seek out answers to Mac, Idevice issues, but a lot of my friends just shake there heads in amazement at the sheer numbers of bad manners in this forum. Macrumors has gotten to be so big, that it is impossible to moderate it successfully.

so many great people who do help, but so many fall into this phase of "don't ask and we won't tell - but we will slap you upside your head because we can."

I think if we could just be more helpful and less caustic, it'll benefit everybody. Why would anybody want to argue that point?

why can't you let this go? Obviously this guy is new, he probably isn't as familiar with JB as you are. Instead of attacking him for his misunderstanding, maybe you can take the high road and spend your time helping someone? Causing more conflict is pointless. he was mis informed, is probably really new to this world. No reason to continue attacking his newbie-ness. he probably did not mean any ill-will at all. Your posts were filled with such condescension. Why?

Let's get back on track to why this forum was put here in the first place, to be a source for information. Sure we don't want vast repetition amongst various subjects, but we shouldn't we be able to direct newbies in a more friendly approach?

Actually there is some problem with jailbreak. Lots of people and when I say lots, I mean it , are stuck on apple logo even after untethering. Even I got stuck on 5/7 devices I own. And there were not first reboots . It worked for some time and then it got stuck. U can check the dev team blog for proof or just twitter search it ;-) .. And let's not turn it into a flame war. Forums are meant to help people not flame them .. :)

Back to iOS 4.2.1 till I am absolutely sure Its stable. Damn I lost my data :-(

where did i attack him?

I asked him not to post information in a way that makes it seem as if there are problems with the jailbreak itself because it causes confusion amongst members who already struggle to understand jailbreaking.

I can't tell you how often you hear, jailbreaking can break your phone, jailbreaking voids warranty, jailbreaking is bad, etc....

I'm not attacking anybody, stop being so sensitive.

abs- did you ever think maybe it's because you are doing something wrong. Not necessarily saying you are but 95%+ of jb problems are user errors. Either with the way you installed software in the past, not properly putting your device into DFU, etc. Also, there is a difference between problems with the jailbreak tool, and the jailbreak itself... they are two entirely different things, created by two different people.

Yeah, I jailbroke my 3GS again just fine, but can't get my MyWi 5.0 or MyWi on Demand to install. Used to work like a charm. Grrr....

Still can't get my apps

But on a serious note i'm thankful for the JB and will patiently wait.. :D

I recently did a custom ipsw and now itunes won't sync any of my apps. Someone please help!!

I did update itunes before installing (should I have not done that??) and used pwnage tool 5.0.1

I also did notice that the actual itunes app on the phone and app store app constantly crash now. Anyone else having similar problems.

They updated redsn0w . Apparently solves the problem..

I'm using the redsnow from yesterday, not the updated one I don't think. My jailbreak went fine, but I haven't tried to download anything since I know cydia is getting hammered. Does this mean I will possibly have issues or am I good?

Untethered JB with redsn0w worked perfect first time around for me. I did follow iClarified's guide to the T, of course.

Just download the latest Corona from cydia and you'll be fine.

I have a few questions before I upgrade to the new IOS and then jailbreak it.

1. How do I preserve the app layout on my springboard?
2. How do I restore my cydia apps using PKGbackup?
3. Does SBSettings work on IOS 5?
4. When I upgrade my phone to IOS 5, does all the itunes and cydia apps get automatically updated to the latest one so it's compatible with IOS 5 or do I have to manually update each app?

Thanks for the help!

Can only answer #4... all that work with iOS 4 will work with 5. Some apps are upgraded to iOS 5 only, so make sure you like iOS 5 before you upgrade your apps.

However, I upgraded to 5.0.1 and jailbroke my Verizon iPhone 4 yesterday (not upgrading the baseband... very important if you ever want to downgrade), and then spent 4 hours restoring it to 4.2.7 with TinyUmbrella and redsn0w. iOS 5 is an absolute disaster. I couldn't maintain a cell signal for more than a minute. Couldn't call out reliably, couldn't access visual voicemail. And it sounds like lots of folks on the Apple Discussion forums are having problems as well. Just a word to the wise. If I were you, wait until a new version and jailbreak comes out that'll fix those issues.

Updated to 5.0.1 (from 5.0 tethered jb) then ran redsn0w, went quite smoothly. everything seems to work, except for makeitmine carrier banner name, finally broke after 3 jailbreaks without makeitmine installed. That's okay :D
