Can only answer #4... all that work with iOS 4 will work with 5. Some apps are upgraded to iOS 5 only, so make sure you like iOS 5 before you upgrade your apps.

However, I upgraded to 5.0.1 and jailbroke my Verizon iPhone 4 yesterday (not upgrading the baseband... very important if you ever want to downgrade), and then spent 4 hours restoring it to 4.2.7 with TinyUmbrella and redsn0w. iOS 5 is an absolute disaster. I couldn't maintain a cell signal for more than a minute. Couldn't call out reliably, couldn't access visual voicemail. And it sounds like lots of folks on the Apple Discussion forums are having problems as well. Just a word to the wise. If I were you, wait until a new version and jailbreak comes out that'll fix those issues.
That's your problem. I tried to update to 5.0 without updating my baseband and I had so many connection issues. Once I updated baseband, 5.0 was smooth sailing.

If you want to update to 5.0/5.0.1 on VZW, you absolutely need to update baseband or else you will have connectivity issues.

What kind of idiot moron pirates apps less than a bloody DOLLAR? Jailbreakers are asinine, spend hundreds on a phone, dont pay for applications made by hard working developers. Go back to Linux if you are so stingy with money.

Jailbreakers are asinine? Jailbreaking isn't about pirating.

I've probably spent over a hundred dollars just on Cydia apps alone.

MyWi - $25
Barrel - $3
TetherMe - $2 (when I got it)
iBlacklist - $12
BiteSMS - $9
Cyntact - $2
FolderEnhancer - $2
LockInfo - $8
SMS GV Extensions - $3
Phone GV Extensions - $3
VoiceActiviator - $5
My3G
3G Unrestrictor
Gridlock
Snappy - $2
Navigate from Maps
MyOS - $1
(I don't remember how much everything was).

And even though it's free, I've donated at least $20 to the developer of Activator. I worked with him to help fix some bugs I had noticed, and felt like I needed to pay him a little for his time.

These apps are made by real people in their free time (not faceless corporations). They deserve our support for supporting our devices. I jailbreak and gladly pay for what I use.
Jailbreaking is about getting the ~freedom~ to do more with my devices. To get more features, to make my stuff able to do more than it was designed to do, etc. It's not about pirating or getting more free stuff.

Regarding apps from the App Store, I wouldn't be surprised if I found out I spent over a thousand dollars on those.
LogMeIn; $25, Navigon; $45 + $20 for addons, iTeleport; $20 - plus dozens of other professional-grade applications that cost quite a bit. Many were paid for twice for both iPhone and iPad versions. Not to mention the hundreds of games I have purchased for myself and others since 2009 (I gift a lot of applications to my wife and friends).

Jailbreaking isn't asinine.

God that sucks - I was really hoping for a 04.11.08 solution before I went back to China. Purchased two iphone 4's (32 gig) for less than $100 total... assumed I'd be able to unlock them before I went back overseas.

I guess I'm going to have to buy two crappy iphone 3's and wait for an unlock solution, gevey or somewhere else.

Sorry to join the masses in begging for that unlock, but does anyone know where to be looking for a possible solution for this?

Cheers,

Unique iPhone 4 Situation

Hey guys :)

I guess I can say that I have similar issues as some of you on here with a few exceptions:

I bought my iPhone 4 second hand from ebay, and the seller informed me that the phone is locked to AT&T, restored back to factory settings and running on firmware 5.0.1. My issue is that because I don't have an AT&T microsim card, I can't activate the phone to see what baseband I have (I am currently stuck on the activation screen). Does the fact that she upgraded the phone to 5.0.1 automatically upgrade the baseband or is there still hope that I may have an unlockable baseband?? (I've read at least two posts on here that claim that upgrading to 5.0.1 on an iP4 doesn't necessarily upgrade the baseband)

I've read on so many threads that jailbreaking automatically activates it, but what I am unsure of is if I should preserve the baseband first in hopes that the BB may be unlockable (I want to be able to use it on T-Mobile). I have NEVER jailbroken before, so I am completely new to all this.

Hopefully you guys can be of some assistance...

looks like redsn0w-0.9.10b3 is out now fixing some of the errors we've been seeing.

I've not done an update before, do I need to restore before re-jailbreaking or should redsn0w just overwrite the files?

Yes, the bb gets upgraded as well.
You will have to wait for Muscle Nerd's unlock when he releases it - :)

Are you absolutely sure?? And if so...in the meantime should i go ahead and do an untethered jailbreak (preserving whatever baseband I may have first) or should I wait until Muscle Nerd's unlock to jailbreak all at once?

I just runned redsn0w (didn't select 'install cydia') over my existing jailbreak and it's running smooth so far.

After running RedSn0w (twice, 2nd time with the latest 9.10b3 version) things are looking pretty good on my iPhone 4, except that the App Store crashes back to the home page after a few seconds of trying to load.

Any idea what might be causing that? (I've run xBackup/restore, so I could have some inconsistent/incompatible old Cydia App or setting that's messing things up - that was true with Safari Download Helper crashing my Safari until I removed it).

thanks for any insight or guesses you can provide...

i hope that you have some data that can back your claim regarding 'asians'.
maybe you should consider the driving factors involved with the markets of iphone/ios devices.

such intolerable statements "...and even afyer paying this much premium (just bcoz he is an asian)". "Yes asians collect their pocket moeny for almost 1-2 year...."
not withstanding the lack of spelling and grammar.

Yes asians collect their pocket moeny for almost 1-2 years to collect 1000 $$ to purchase the same iphone that you get for 500 $$ and even afyer paying this much premium ( just bcoz he is an asian ) you expect them to pay for apps too... when the reality is these jailbreaks are the invention of west...

Update: I can run App Store in Safe Mode, but when I reboot again it crashes again. I've searched Cydia for "store" trying to find some AppStore tweak I might have installed, but didn't find anything.

Well said, Bravo!

Not alot of people understand that are tons of tweaks that enhance the phone! They think Jailbreak = Piracy.

I did purchase a few Cydia apps back when my ip4 was jailbroken, but honestly games and many apps are just $0.99 in the app store so I purchase them there. I don't have much use for those fancy professional apps.

I hope this chart explains and helps everyone who are so confused with everything.

First of all, I would like to say a HUGE THANK YOU to pod2G for the jailbreak. I was on 4.1 until 2 days ago when I made the jump to 5.0.1 (preserved baseband 1.59.00), also upgraded my ipad 1 to the latest and greatest.

I had error 21 and 1600 issues through itunes on my mac, had to move to my work pc to get things cleared for both the ipad and iphone.

Love the new iOS, love intelliscreenX (bought it). I think these guys deserve a lot of credit and should get some donations for their time, its clear this stuff takes a lot of work.

It won't let me install Corona, just tells me it can't find the package. I'm not having any problems with my jailbreak as of yet.

I dont know what the symptoms are. You can now safely run the latest redsn0w (b3) over top of it without fear of messing mobile substrate up

Ridiculous, half the reasons for jailbreaking seem to be have accomplished in iOS updates recently, it seems the reasons for jailbreaking now are

- piracy
- bypassing carrier restrictions which hurt the network for people and violate ToS
- tethering, for the same reason, all of us legit users pay for it, what entitles you to get it for free?
- unneccesary modifications and themes to turn the iOS into some asperger-influenced android mess that look awful at best and harm performance at worst. If your battery life is so "terrible" that you need a button immediately on your homescreen to disable 3G then perhaps you should take the phone for a replacement rather than going through a process to save a few taps.

I mean, come on now, if you need all those things just buy an Android already. When I see posts about people buying 4Ses on launch day and leaving them unopened until a jailbreak release, limiting legit users who may have wanted a chance to have one on launch, all I can do is shake my head. Sure having Facetime over 3G would be great but I'm not about to go through a mess to have one simple feature that impacts network performance for others.

Heck, just look at all the posts in the Wasteland asking for jailbreak advice, 90% of them are poorly written nonsense relating to piracy, that shows you something about the mentality of these people.

What is so bad about customization?

If I upgrade to 5.0.1 with 1.59 baseband, does it still require Ultrasnow to work? If yes, does it still break voicemail?

It is not for the weaK. And my notification center beat up your honor roll kid.:p:cool:

So you essentially turned it into an android interface full of clutter and tasks that can be accomplished with ease, why do you constantly need easy access to reboot, shutdown, task killer stuff in such a weird way, or cripes, the iOS version?

Also at the top it says you're running 5.0 but the other thing says 5.0.1, is this the jailbreaker's version of Android's multiple clocks everywhere with different times?
