Now I might actually have to try that one!

In NYC (urban areas in general) there is a ridiculous amount of Ingress content. You'll meet a ton of players and level up very quickly. Even on foot. I live out on Long Island (east end, in the sticks) and Ingress content is few and far between. Not feasible without a vehicle. I imagine it will be similar with Pokemon Go: rich content in high-population-density areas, and not so much elsewhere.

I think this will be the biggest game ever to hit mobile. The concept is brilliant. My kids already want to get outside and start searching. Nothing like turning an obsession with Pokemon into a reason to travel, explore and exercise.

This! My son, who usually wants to just sit inside and play computer games, and we normally have to force to go out, now wants to go out side to play Pokemon.mits a step n the right direction if you ask me. It does mean we might have to upgrade his dumb phone to a smart phone so he stops stealing his mothers to find Pokemon with though.

Yes it is sad that kids need a device to make them want to go outside, but it's still better than them sitting inside all day.

It definitely needs an update. So slow to load and now the servers are down. Probably overloaded

I had no idea this was so attractive to adults. Is that the target market for this GO game?... adults?
A lot of people who are adults now were little kids when Pokemon started. I was 31, but what the heck, they're cute. It lets everyone get a chance to be Ash Ketchum or one of his many female sidekicks.

Not played a Pokemon game since Pokemon Blue in 1999 and I was in High School (wow, makes me feel old!)

I literally cannot wait to play this, the concept seems to fit Pokemon perfectly!

Squirtle FTW!! :p

It's the same company so Niantic Labs probably won't care .
I just hope it's not too much of a distraction for Niantic. Some of us still like Ingress. A lot.

Just take 2 iphones and play both at the same time - they seem to use partly the same 'portals' ...
I expect they're reusing all the location/landmark data collected from Ingress to make this - I'll be surprised if you see Pokemon locations that aren't Ingress portals.

Already got it, level 5

Nintendo, The Pokemon Company and Niantic's augmented reality game Pokemon GO is rolling out in the App Store now. The game is available in New Zealand, Australia and is propagating through the App Store around the world and in the U.S.

The game uses augmented reality and real-world maps to allow users to venture into the real world to look for Pokemon to capture. Once collected, Pokemon can be leveled up, traded and used for battle. They can also be assigned to defend Gyms from other players. Gyms, like Pokemon, can be found by wandering out into the real world.

When a player is wandering through their neighborhood and a Pokemon is nearby, the game will send the player a notification. Certain Pokemon and items are only available in select locations. For instance, water Pokemon are available near bodies of water while certain PokeBalls are located near museums and other points of interest.

Players can also purchase an optional accessory called Pokemon GO Plus, a wrist-worn device that syncs with the game and alerts users to events happening in the game within their physical vicinity, like the appearance of a new Pokemon.

Our sister site TouchArcade shared some thoughts on the app compared to its beefier, handheld cousins on Nintendo DS.
Pokemon GO is Nintendo's second game for iOS after Miitomo. Later this year, the company will launch two more games based on its Fire Emblem and Animal Crossing franchises.

It doesn't take the traditional battling system from that game though. Disappointing really. You just tap to attack, it's dumb.

I have created an account in the us store and downloaded it. I am from the uk

Tried it out last night on my late night walk. It's interesting to see how they use the data from Ingress. It definitely is entirely Ingress portal locations (not just by position, but all the same pictures and names, though not crediting the Ingress agents who submitted the locations the way Ingress does), but they don't use _all_ of the portals; probably using some algorithm to select more popular locations while not getting too many in any given area. In keeping with San Diego's wealth of Ingress portals, there's a "Gym" within a hundred yards of my home. And our neighborhood park has seven PokéStops and a Gym - last night the park was occupied by a handful of Jedi hopefuls (well, folks practicing light saber dueling in an organized way - yeah), but on the weekends the park never has fewer than a couple of bouncy houses for kids parties - I predict that there's gonna be a whole lot of this game being played there next weekend. I wonder if folks have to fight over who captures a given Pokémon if multiple players are around when it appears, or if each player sees their own unique Pokémons to interact with. Also, I wonder how long until some kid gets hit by a car - the tendency is to run towards one to get in range when they appear (I know nothing of Pokémon lore, but they do seem to disappear after a little while), and the game had no problem popping Pokémons up on my screen, on the opposite side of a busy intersection - it took a split second to "step out of the game" and remember that it wasn't a good idea to cross against the light to get to them.

In general, it seems there is less to do while walking around - basically, watch your display for Pokémons that (may) appear at random, and you interact with each portal - er, PokéStop - to collect some small items (took me half the walk to figure that part out - I think I missed some of the tutorial). The AR overlay is reasonably well done. The music is relentlessly cheerful and enthusiastic. Was made to log back in six or seven times over the course of an hour or so, and I don't like typing my Google password (it's long and then there's the two-step authentication). Particularly galling when it makes you go through the lengthy login process only to say, "Our servers are experiencing issues. Please come back later." Gee, thanks, couldn't you have checked on that before the blood test and brain tissue sample?

But all in all, an entertaining game, at least for a while (I now have 16 Pokémons!). Here's hoping Niantic doesn't forget Ingress in all the Pokémon excitement.

I still feel it falls under the "good concept, terrible execution" category.

You walk outside, you collect (catch) Pokemon, interact with stops, battle people by tapping (how lame)....and? That's it? What's the point?

I grew up with Pokémon and back then we wished it was real. This is not what I expected, though.

Found the interview I memtioned earlier. Very detailed on how the game works and actual game play footage in here as well.
