i don't drink soda personally. anyone ever check the ingredients list on soda? do you really enjoy drinking nothing but chemicals? no thanks...

For taste, Pepsi Max. For ethics of the companies, Pepsi again. Coca-Cola's ethics and worker environment/hygiene/care is very poor. Pepsi's still isnt very good, but it is better.

Good point. Most soft drinks or energy drinks contain sodium, which will soak water and cause thirst again. Also, we still dont know exactly what 7X is in Coca-Cola....;)

ooh....awesome! is it in the "jewish foods" section or the regular soda aisle?
that's teh only attraction of mexican coke, and it's pretty expensive, so it'd be nice if it were available cheaper.

It's in the kosher section at the Kroger I go to. You'd better hurry if you want to get any this year. It goes pretty fast.

The real culprit in Cola is caffeine, which dehydrates you, making you more thirsty.

While not the most healthy drink to consume,
it is quite tasty........but should be consumed in moderation). :)

While I agree with the larger point of your post, it has long bugged me what a bad name sugar gets.

What the hell is wrong with sugar?

You're kidding right? I could name 100 things that are bad about sugar. (And obviously I'm not talking about naturally occuring sugars, but the refined crap that is in all our foods, soft drinks, etc.)

In suammary, how about obesity, diabetes and cancer?

Here's an expanded list for ya off the top of my head. I'll shrink them down so they don't take up too much space...

Sugar lowers your immune system
Sugar causes a loss of tissue elasticity and function (the more sugar you eat the more elasticity and function you lose i.e. you age faster)
Sugar can produce a significant rise in triglycerides
Sugar reduces high density lipoproteins
Sugar leads to chromium deficiency
Sugar can increase fasting levels of glucose
Sugar causes copper deficiency
Sugar interferes with absorption of calcium
Sugar can weaken eyesight (myopia, specifically)
Sugar raises the level of dopamine, serotonin and norepinephrine (neurotransmitters, if you're not familiar with them)
Sugar can cause hypoglycemia
As I said above, sugar contributes to obesity (your body turns sugar into fat)
High intake of sugar increases the risk of Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis
Sugar can cause asthma (I'm living proof of this one since I had horrible asthma as a kid which I have since cured due to my lifestyle changes)
Sugar can cause a decrease in insulin sensitivity (as I said above, diabetes)
Sugar can increase cholesterol
Sugar can increase your systolic blood pressure
Sugar can interfere with the absorption of protein
Sugar can cause headaches, including migraines

Yikes, I could go on and on...

As I said, I'm living proof of many of the above. When I changed my diet and lifestyle and cut out all that crap (chips, soft drinks, fast food, etc.) the changes were amazing. I've never felt healthier or have been in better shape.

Now too much sugar can be bad, I'm sure - but is pharmaceutically-designed sugar substitute going to be better for you? I'd put my money on no.

Of course it isn't - those are worse in some cases!

The long and the short of it is that if refined sugar was released as a new product in this day and age, it would be considered a drug and wouldn't be approved by the FDA.

Meh.

As I've said before, give me cannolis until I die.

Sugar is wonderful, I'm mortal, and life, generally speaking, is boredom punctuated by crisis.

Carpe diem, etc.

Geez, let a man enjoy his sugar :p
Not everyone wants to live forever being all slim like you ;)

Heh heh. I agree, everything in moderation. However drinking a can of pop which has a truckload of sugar in it is not moderation for me. :p ;)

I treat myself from time to time, don't get me wrong, (you have to live after all!) but I also care about my health, and I have personally experienced what a difference making healthy choices can do for a person.

It just surprises me how many poeple out there either have a complete disregard for their own health, or don't make time time to educate themselves on such important things so they at least know what they're doing is bad for them, even if they still choose to do it.

I heard that sugar can make your girlfriend cheat on you and your dog pee on your favorite chair.
Dare I say that sugar is Chuck Norris' arch-nemesis?

Either that or Brice Lee... who ironically I think was referred to as "Sugar" by Chuck...

I basically know that my eating is bad. Not that this makes a huge difference but I almost exclusivley drink water. But regarding the food... I rather not tell. Luckily I was blessed with a metabolism that withstands even the strongest attacks of ice cream, pizza, burgers, chips and tacos. :D

Wait 10 years then get back to us on that metabolism of yours... :p

As for the sugar/crap food debate, I agree that just about any processed food you buy today is going to have potentially bad things in it if you have enough of it. Hell, even "healthy" foods aren't necessarily all that good for you - low fat foods with high sodium content, low carb foods that are high in fat, etc.

The point is, for me at least, it to try and maintain a healthy mix of fruits, vegetables, water, natural protein, etc. in my diet. But I'm not going to stop myself from the occasional Hershey bar or Dairy Queen ice cream (or, yes, the occasional Big Mac) just because when they are force fed to rats in amounts equivalent to oil tankers they cause problems. I know they're not specifically "health food", but to be fair, they don't kill you in moderation either.

Interesting. So far, I seem to be the exception to this rule - I am healthy, with low blood pressure, good eyesight, healthy breathing (except I smoke), I am thin and look 10 years younger than my age.

I don't really like sweet things (ie candy, cake, soda), however, but love to pile on the sugar in my coffee and cereal.

Sugar raises the level of dopamine, serotonin and norepinephrine (neurotransmitters, if you're not familiar with them)
I quite like this one.

Still, I am a fan of moderation, which seems to allow me a nice mix of quality and quantity of life.

I chose Coke over Pepsi, based solely on the head-to-head comparison between the two colas.
If I'm going to drink a soda, I'd rather drink Sierra Mist, Mountain Dew, or Sprite. In that order.

Hey, don't get me wrong, do as you wish, and enjoy life however you see fit! You essentially asked, so I was just providing some facts. :) I'm not going to make this into a whole "You should / you shouldn't debate" or else then that will spill into how people shouldn't smoke cuz they know it's bad for them, they shouldn't do drugs, they should drink a lot, blah blah blah... ;)

Yeah, actually me too, playnig with those chemicals can be fun at times... ;) :D

And once again, I agree - that's one of my mottos - everything in moderation. Can't go too wrong with that philosophy.
