I got hooked on Reddit due to having some forums with topics of interest, ranging from one for the car I drove to a good home improvement and financial advice forum. But yeah -- this is also true. It really feels like a heavily left-wing biased site full of people who will downvote anything you say, if it offends them in some fashion or runs counter to their belief system.

I didn't even think I posted anything there particularly "polarizing", but you have to walk on eggshells around there to avoid anything that triggers someone. (I mean, people were getting absolutely torn to shreds on the financial advice forum just because they suggested not paying rent was a valid reason to get evicted. Landlords should clearly eat all expenses for anyone struggling due to job loss or medical issues they didn't have insurance for, or ??)
Yeah, its overwhelming penchant for groupthink, appeal to authority and endless mental gymnastics/convolution/cognitive dissonance far outweigh its potential utility to any sensible, thinking person in the long haul. It can be decent for occasional informational grazing; that I am not denying. But its collectively-corrupted political sensibilities nearly always seem to stand in the way.

Reddit is a cesspool echo chamber. Hopefully it goes the way of the dodo (Twitter) very soon.

Depends on where on it you hang out. I'm positive there are some crappy subreddits there, but I don't visit them. A lot of the technical/maker subs are great. Probably the best place to find support for a number of hobbies that you'll find anywhere on the web.

Reddit is basically USENET 2.0 - the singular place for disparate communities to form without needing to reinvent the whole stack from the ground up (users/messaging/posting/retention/etc.) But now that NNTP is pretty much dead, this is what we're left with. Spaces controlled by a handful of corporations trying to turn profits.

Individual forums are ok for some things. But I can check in on a dozen subreddits through Apollo in seconds.

Dang! That sucks! Reddit might be next to be shut down from the social media platform.

Someone come up with $20 Million Dollars quick to save them.
$20 million...per year. Basically no way to make it work unless he could reduce the number of requests the app makes by 100x, or increase the subscription cost 10x. Currently every paying user would be losing money.

From reddit's side, it makes sense as these users are basically freeloading as they get no ads, and limited telemetry data. But from a user perspective, Apollo is the only reason I use reddit, I despise using the web UI and the mobile app is only slightly better.

Horrible decision. It's pretty transparent that their plan was to make the pricing completely unreasonable so as to kill 3rd party apps and force us into their complete trash ad-app.

Seems to me the only (possible?) way forward would be to remove the free app and do the math on how many requests are made solely by paid users, and it would still likely require jacking up the price.

It's funny because I deleted the official Reddit app from my phone just a few days ago. My thought process was something along the lines of: "Wait...why did I install this crap I barely use again?" Like Tw*tter I'll just access through Safari if it comes to that, which likely it won't, because the platform is increasingly irrelevant, useless trash anyhow.

It makes me realize that many use Reddit differently than I do. I mostly use HardwareSwap, BuildAPCSales, stuff like that. It stays away from politics and serves a very useful purpose for me. I have been building a home theater and users there have been EXTREMELY helpful. I blocked all the big political subreddits, used Apollo to block any posts including Elon, Musk, Trump, etc. Reddit (IMO) is as good as the subreddits you follow. I rarely if ever look at /all or /popular and just stick to my niche interests and it's a pretty pleasant place. I get enough value from Apollo that I'd happily pay my $2.50/month.

Some communities do indeed serve utilitarian purposes rather than political agendas, true. Sad that the tumorous dynamics of rest of the platform have to drag down such gems.

Hey all, if you have any questions about this feel free to ask (I'm the Apollo developer).

Been using MacRumors since before I could code so it's always cool to be on the site, wish it was under better circumstances.
Just wanted to thank you for being transparent about this whole situation. Stay strong! ❤️

Oof - Reddit does seem to have accelerated things down that path.
But if someone can come up with $20M, there are much more worthy scenarios than Reddit. ❤️

Your app is great, and I happily subscribe to Ultra. Do you have a plan forward? I posted this a bit above, but I think the only remote possibility would be removing the free version, determining the cost of keeping it for paid users and figuring out the price. Thoughts?

Apollo is and will forever be iconic, right up there with AlienBlue. But methinks it's time you put your resources and talent into something that will hold your knack for Apple-tailored software in a more appreciative regard.

Here's to the future! I can't wait what to see what might be next for you.

It certainly seems that many social platforms do not want any third-party apps. It will be interesting to see if people migrate to other services.

Apollo is the only reason I use reddit. It has so many features that if absent, would make the platform unbearable.

If only companies like Reddit, Twitter, Netflix, and Warner-Discovery would realize that even if these decisions make them more money in the short term, forcing large portions of their most loyal customers to rage quit hurts their brand incredibly more in the long run and completely cripples growth and word-of-mouth.
