Is Torchlight a native Mac version or a Cider port of some kind?

Anyone know for sure?

I'm assuming it's native since the files are compressed differently, and there are bugs that the devs are frantically squashing (I've heard that there are no bugs while playing Torchlight through WINE)

Either way though, it can run on a netbook, it can run on any mac that steam can run on.

Also, it looks like anyone who purchased torchlight from Runic directly will (eventually) get a key to put it in their steam account. Yippie!

I hope my Macbook (late 09) can handle playing these games decently. With 4gb of RAM and a 500 GB HD I hope it will, it'd be nice to play Left 4 Dead on my Macbook which goes with me everywhere.

Torchlight is not demanding at all, it runs on pretty much anything.
No idea about portal, but it seems it runs decent on anything that is DX9 compatible, so I guess your Macbook (if it has 9400m) will run it just fine.
The Source engine is already pretty well in OpenGL implemention, since the PlayStation versions is already running in OpenGL, so I suspect Source based games to be performing a lot better than ciderized games.

They aren't that bad are they?

Unfortunately they are... Every single graphics card I've tried performs better under bootcamp with updated Win drivers then they do preform in 10.6.3. Its really no wonder since on Windows side graphics drivers seem to be updated all the time but on Mac the drivers are neglected. For example there are plethora of ATI and NVIDIA cards sitting on Macs that have h.264 acceleration hardware on the chip but Apple hasn't provided the driver updates to support that. I think in general its very unfortunate that Apple hasn't been active on graphics driver updates but hopefully game titles and services such as Steam will force them to get off their collective lazy ass.

That's what the press release says.

it also makes mention of :

"Among the initial titles available on Wednesday..."

they wouldn't say that if there were just two games launching. at least i sure hope there are a few more than that. Valve is pushing portal a lot right now mainly because of the up and coming Portal 2, i would hope that maybe a couple of other Source based games would show up as well.

Thinking about the price of Orange Box with Half Life 2 + episode one and two, Team Fortress 2 and Portal you end up paying no more then $27. I just hope Valve won't be getting greedy and try to over charge just so you can install the same stuff on to Mac side. If they want to release Steam with style they would give away Portal for free and that way pave the road for Portal 2.

I'm really not sure why this is news or should be on page one.

Aren't there gaming sites where this would be more appropriate?

I wouldn't be surprised if the "Midweek Madness" deal tomorrow is 50% off the Orange Box.

The other games are not Valve games, they are games that utilize Steam Play. The full list is over at joystiq. Other Valve games will be coming on subsequent Wednesdays, like the press release says.

How long until we see "Apple to Acquire Valve in all cash transaction, for more information see itunes.com/games".

I have a really-kick ass gaming PC right now. It's top of the line and runs everything like Crysis on high settings. I don't really play those games, though. I really only play Source games like TF 2 and L4D2 really. I'm going to grad school for three years in the Fall and am moving across the country for it. I'd like to be as mobile as possible and I really just see myself using my computer for mostly studying and only occasionally gaming on the weekends.

So really, all I'm interested in are TF 2, L4d2, and Starcraft 2 (and maybe Diablo 3). I know the new 13" MBP with the 320M can run those games well enough, but I was wondering how well you think it would run in the thick of heavy gaming? Like when all 32 players in a TF2 game are in one area shooting all over the place? Or in L4D2, when there are dozens and dozens of zombies on screen while buildings are getting blown up around you? Will it be able to hold it's FPS during those moments? I'm used to experiencing no hiccups on the absolute highest settings for those games. I've never gamed on a laptop, much less an aluminum one, and I guess I'd be worried about melting the laptop. Any thoughts on how well the 320m will handle those?

It won't melt, but don't expect ultra-high settings to work flawlessly.

I'd be perfectly happy running at medium or low if it means a consistently good FPS, which is what I'm aiming for.

Incase you remember the fiasco with the release and stolen source code of Half Life 2. It's confirmed that this won't happen here, since Valve has a backup plan this time :p
