'Portal' and 'Torchlight' Amongst Mac Steam Launch Titles

I'd buy Portal but seriously $20? How about $10. I thought Steam was cheap?

It works out better if you buy The Orange Box, since all games on it are coming to Mac. It's only a few £ more than Portal on its own and you get the Half Life 2 series (3 god-awesome single player games) and Team Fortress 2 (multiplayer FPS).

Aw, that means I have to wait at least another week for Team Fortress 2. Oh, well.

Does anybody know if the file sizes, of the games, have significantly changed when going from Windows to OS X? Are they smaller, bigger, or around the same?

+1! I thought HL2 would be there at launch?!

The title of this thread is "'Portal' and 'Torchlight' Amongst Mac Steam Launch Titles". Where does it say HL2 and TF2 won't be there also?

Torchlight is an excellent game if you like the Diablo series. It's pretty much the same game style and even has some of the same developers. There's a pretty big mod community also.

I'm psyched that this is coming out for launch. No more playing through CrossOver with its graphical glitches! I assume it will be included under Steam Play, so we don't have to re-purchase it? Also, has anyone heard whether said mods will carry over seamlessly?

I'm really not sure why this is news or should be on page one.

Aren't there gaming sites where this would be more appropriate?

There's no reason they shouldn't. They are alterations to the data files and not to the executable.

What if I already bought torchlight for windows on steam, can I download the Mac version for free? This how blizzard online store works.

This is all great news, can't wait!!

I just wish all source mods would work on the Mac as well, I'm waiting anxiously for Black Mesa to get released (it's a Half-Life 2 mod) and I don't think that will work with Steam for Mac, which means I'll have to keep my Crossover installation (26 GB), plus have Steam for Mac separately for everything else.

As someone else had said, buy the Orange Box, but keep your eye on it and wait until the price drops, before Christmas the total cost of it was £10 (= $15) so I quickly bought it. Maybe they will have discounts for the Mac launch, and they will probably have discounts throughout the year for various holidays. Steam sometimes does ridiculous price drops, it's worth looking out for that!

Okay, allow me to answer my own questions with this link straight from the source:

It will be supporting Steam Play, so Windows Steam purchasers will get it for free. Not only that, but they intend to offer everyone who bought directly from Runic free Mac Steam codes at some point in the near future. Cool!

Also, mods will work, "but they MUST be the uncompressed data files". I have no idea how significant an issue that is, as I've yet to play with any mods.

The main bad thing is apparently Torchlight's saved games will not be compatible, so you'll have to start over on the Mac. But Cloud support will work for automatic Mac-to-Mac and PC-to-PC transfers.

A few days ago, I was glancing over my list of titles I've purchased through Steam (all 96 of them), and was just thinking how, of all of them, Torchlight was one of the few I'd like to be able to play on my macbook pro, when I get a free moment at work. It's like Valve and Runic Games read my mind...

Assuming that Portal will be the only Valve game released on Steam tomorrow, and the remaining Steam games will trickle onto Steam for OSX every Wednesday for a few weeks ...

If I buy the Orange Box for Steam in Windows, will I have access to all of the Orange Box games for Mac as the OSX versions are released? Eg, if I bought Orange Box for Windows tonight, could I get access to Portal for OSX tomorrow, Team Fortress 2 for OSX next Wednesday, Half Life 2 for OSX the following Wednesday, etc . . .?

If no one knows the answer to this, then: is the Orange Box for Steam on Windows one game application, where you choose which game to play from a title screen (like on a console compilation) or do you get all of the games as individual applications, as though you had purchased them separately?

Yep. That's how it works.

They are separated (from what I can remember).

I hope they release them on DVD.

I have a monthly download cap, so I would prefer ot buy them in a physical format.

Well, in the official press announcement, it states that 'Portal' and 'Torchlight' will be there for the launch. I'm going by logic and guess that TF2 would arrive on one of the subsequent Wednesdays, which is why my post read as it did.

The Orange Box, is just a box of games. You'll get each game as a separate game in your library tab. (so yes, as you had purchased them separately but cheaper)

The press release says "Portal, in addition to supporting Steam Play, will be the first of Valve's Source engine based games available on the Mac." To me, that reads that it is the only Valve game to be released this week. There may be more games available tomorrow but they won't be Valve games.

The problem with Mac gaming boils down to the terrible graphics drivers. Apple really needs to get their thumb out of their ass and start optimising.

Sweet! I hope it'll run well on my older 2.0GHz, 9400m Macbook! Now I just have to keep my fingers crossed and hope that Plants vs Zombies will support Steam Play as well. :D

The actual press release is here.

It sounds like Portal and Torchlight will be the only games on tomorrow with new games every Wednesday.

Runs like a dream on my x1600 (2 years older than a 9400M). I wouldn't worry about it! There's also a Netbook display option that can run on the oldest of old (even I dont have to use that, on high, man!).
