A lot of people seem excited about a 5.5" "phone", I don't get it, it's too big to easily use as a phone - why not just use an iPad mini (or better still a full-sized iPad) and Skype to make calls? Trump everyone else if size = cool, be ahead of the game and look really smart at the same time... ;)

Heh, the other day I saw some tool at Whole Foods talking on a phone that was nearly the size of my Nexus 7.

I read books and articles on my Nexus 7 every day, but I've never felt the urge to make a phone call with it. Sometimes you need to know the right tool for the job.

That said, I don't see the iPhone 5.5" being so large. It looks much narrower than some of the ridiculous "phablets" out there. To put it another way, nobody is going to look at someone using this new iPhone and assume he is meagerly endowed.

Not really.. take the 4.7" out of the picture, to remove the perspective bias, and then look again.
The 5.5" then definitely looks somewhere in the middle, between the 4" and the 7.9". So could reasonable be a small ipad, as much as a large iphone.

But, other than you, who cares? There were once 17" iMacs. Then, Apple rolled out 24" and 27" iMacs. Take out the 24" iMac and the 27" could be seen as a small television instead of a bigger iMac. But again, who cares? Those who wanted a 27" iMac got what they wanted. Those who wanted a 24" got what they wanted too.

Soon, Apple will roll out 4.7" and 5.5". While the 5s will probably still be kept around, the sentiment will quickly shift. I expect words like "puny" and phrases like "how did we ever get by with such tiny screens?" to be flying within days of the launches. That's how it goes.

When the rumor began to fly that Apple was going to go 4", there was huge backlash slinging "abomination", "stupid", "99% don't want", "fragmentation", "Steve Jobs said" and on and on. Then the rumors piled up so it looked really likely and much of that sentiment shifted into "wait & see" and "it's kind of growing on me". Then Apple rolls out 4" and it was quickly "shut up and take my money" and "best iPhone ever". Then phones with screens bigger than 4" became the new "abominations", "stupid", "99% don't want".

Here we go again… only this time, it appears Apple is going to give us a choice… like they do with iMac screen sizes, laptop screen sizes, and iPad screen sizes. Those who want smaller will "love" the 4.7". Those who want bigger will "love" the 5.5". But both groups will be able to get the one they want.

We don't overly put down alternate sizes of iMacs, iPads and laptops. But here, we find such great fault that Apple will roll out 2 size options for an iPhone. Why? Makes no sense to me… especially when those that feel passionate about one size of the other will be able to get the one they want.

That is going to be a VERY big iPhone. I'm thinking about doing this tho, buying the iPhone 5.5" (if indeed it does exist) and getting the 128GB model (again if it does exist) and putting all my music on it and some of my TV shows/movies on it for commuting and university. I think a 5.5" iPhone 6 model is a good idea for Apple to do, there are many uses for it, there not just phones anymore.

Many of the larger phones have better battery life than smaller phones, so it'd actually be likely (if there were a 5.5") that it would have much better battery life than the 4.7" phone.

One of the bigger hardware rumors is that it will have a substantially larger battery than the 4.7" model https://www.macrumors.com/2014/08/15/apparent-5-5-inch-iphone6-battery/, which itself has a rumor suggesting its battery will be a nice upgrade in capacity vs. the 5s battery. I hope so.

That's the difference between you and them. They have urges you don't, and they act on them. Don't be a hater.

"perspective bias" haha, there's more of a bias when you're viewing an object with nothing to compare it to. a sunflower seed can look huge at the right angle!

If it turns out to be true, and Apple does release both a 4.7" & 5.5" iphone 6, I think I'd prefer the 5.5" iphone. I'm a big dude with big ass hands. Plus I never liked web surfing on the 4" screen...so I always walk around with both the iphone5 and an iPad mini. I think the 5.5" iphone would be the perfect compromise for me. I use my iphone camera for my travel photography blog as well...so rumors about an improved camera with image stabilization are equally as exciting. I'll wait to hold both the 4.7" & 5.5" in my hand...but I'm leaning towards the larger size, especially if it comes with a better camera than the 4.7".

Only a week to find out. :)

Exactly. Just rough numbers the 5.5 is roughly 45% in size to the ipad mini and the 5s is roughtly 60% in size to the 5.5 which makes it quite a bit closer. The ipod nano is about 41% of the 5s, so does that make it an iphone nano?

I think choices are great no matter what. I remember when monitors and tv's also were much smaller, but have gotten larger. Phones make even more sense as they are actually touch screen personal computers that we make calls on, big difference from what they used to be.

Regardless, I'm tired of my big fingers double typing on my small iphone.

Don't forget, that battery's supposed to power not only a larger display but also one with a much higher resolution. Take that into consideration and the battery life overall on the 5.5 model may end up being equivalent to the 4.7 model.

I agree. Can't wait to browse macrumors on my new 5.5 inch screen! Although after the iPhone/iWatch announcements, not sure iOS rumors will be very captivating.

We will move immediately to rumors of the iPhone 6S, the iPhone 6SXL, and the iWatch 2. Don't forget we still have iPads and Apple TVs to argue about.

i am probably alone BUT I LOVE THESE BANDS

finally its all the same material unlike those current ugly random glass pieces

This site is for getting rumors on the latest products before they're presented at a Keynote.

If you would rather see the products for the first time at the Keynote, stay away from the site.

Misses point.

Point is Apple has lost control of all secrecy when it comes to iPhone launches.

Not about original post BUT...

I guess mac rumors is going to totally ignore the major icloud hack doneto multiple female celebrities this weekend including the most famous of them jennifer "hinger games" lawrence? interesting to see what AAPL:apple: has to say about this.....

You don't need to care to make an observation.

You asked if there is a point in watching keynotes and of course there is one.
You'll find out if the rumors were true.
And of course it's no longer possible to hide their production line like maybe back in 2006.
Why do you come here if you like getting surprised at keynotes?
Your first question and sour following posts make no sense and I am sure you're intelligent enough to realize that by now.
Now be cool enough and simply admit it and live on, thanks!

Here is the biggest issue with making the iphone bigger. The bottom and top bezels are too thick. The bottom being the biggest concern. It's already a stretch for someone with small hands to reach to the top left back button on the 4 inch iphone. Not mention awkward length for sitting in front jean pockets.

Unless they move the back button to the bottom (not going to happen) most will definitely need two hands free for a 5.5 inch iphone and small handed people on the 4.7 inch version.

No bueno.

I usually always text with 2 hands, and most games require two hands. one handed texting is convient though, I will admit though rarely as I use it ( driving, class, at a bar with a quick text) I do enjoy it. however, most of the time I use 2 hands on my phone anyways. and the time I use 1 hand it's scrolling down a page like right now in MR. I'll still be able to scroll with one hand on a 5.5" device. so I don't think I'll miss out on too much. especially as I shouldn't be texting while driving. but lezbihonest, we all do it

The point is Apple isn't trying that hard to maintain secrecy on the iPhone.

On the other hand, if you are expecting a particular feature because of the rumors, and it doesn't materialize on the 9th, don't be disappointed, because none of these rumors constitute promises from Apple, and some of them might be disinformation, designed to make you feel foolish for believing them.

Hmm, the more I see of the rumours, which are generally pretty accurate this close to launch, the more I feel it may be time to jump ship.

For a long time iTunes has bugged me as a bottleneck in the whole ecosystem (ran from a PC) and can be very frustrating as I can add films or music from my PC to a friend's HTC phone by simply dragging and dropping... I'm due my upgrade now and was tempted by the HTC One M8 but found it feels too big in the hand in the store, so I imagine the 5.5" iPhone (if and when it comes out) would be similar at least!

My problem is that the 4.7 iPhone seems to be unnecessarily held back with low RAM, small battery and even pretty poor base storage capacity that could and should be better in 2014. It's like Apple have stuck in 2008 to save money (I can't see a legitimate reason to purposely gimp your own product when larger storage/ram is next to no cost difference). I know Jony Ive is on a crusade to make everything thin but I can't help but think the iPhone 6 is going to be the first iPhone that's a disappointment for me - even the "thinness" is ruined by a protruding camera meaning that technically the thickness measurement will actually be a lie unless it includes the camera - it seems that's the only USP Apple have left to grasp at though and they're sacrificing performance/functionality to achieve it.*

*I could well be wrong, the specs could be different at launch but I doubt it - putting the same RAM and barely-bigger battery in a larger screened device is going to hold it back regardless of processor optimization wizardry. The iPhone only ever drinks battery when the screen is on anyway really, so bigger screen, more pixels = less battery life. The RAM limitation already shows on the 5 and even more-so on the iPad which indicates the larger phone will struggle with Safari refreshes etc too.

Just a mild rant and gearing myself up for disappointment so I can only be impressed if Apple pull anything out of the bag, fingers crossed... I've enjoyed my Apple journey since I got my first 3G and I don't really want to jump ship but if they've stopped innovating or at least putting functionality as a priority I fear it'll be time to go! :(
