Everyone move on, there's nothing to see here but a couple of *******s doing a hoax.

Yes, because people who pull hoaxes have nothing better to do than spend thousands of dollars machining parts and hundreds of hours creating a working model with a new OS, only to leave it in a random bar hoping and praying it would get into the right person's hands.

While it could be a Chinese fake or more likely, an Apple prototype, common sense and Occam's razor dicates that it's not a hoax.

Kindergarten fail. Refresher course below..

A Square:

A Rectangle:

Hope that helps the few, dimmer bulbs among us on the forums :)

Multiple meanings fail?

Square can also refer to angles. A square angle is a 90 degree angle.

I'd believe that this is a prototype, where they are testing all the internals, but I don't think for one second that this is the final case. I could see them keeping it kinda squared off, but not that much, and without the seams.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1_3 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7E18 Safari/528.16)

Simple answer: no.

Buttons are entirely un-Apple, there are seams...

If this is it then I'm getting a 3GS instead. This thing is hideous.

Umm... It has the same
buttons as all three current iPhones. The only difference is that the volume rocker is instead two seperate buttons. But I doubt it's legitimate. Probably a Chinese knockoff or a mod job.

The whole thing about finding it in a bar seems dubious. The only possible explanation is that perhaps it’s a special piece of hardware used for development…*Perhaps the case designs are unfinished? Or they need easy access to internal components? Still, why would such a device even be outside of a lab?

Wow. That is the ugliest "iPhone" I've ever seen. Absolutely no grace to the design at ALL.

As said above, if that's the new iPhone, I'll stick with my new 3GS, thank you very much.

This hoax would be far more believable if the "prototype iPhone" had been found in a bar in San Francisco, rather than San Jose.

Then again, maybe not. It's pretty ugly. Perhaps it's the next generation Palm phone? ;-)

Anyone notice the FCC stuff on the back? Would that be there this early?

Again, IF this is a true Apple product, then this MUST be the near-final case design as it has such information on it.

When was the last time Apple tested something in a case that was COMPLETELY different from the final? The prototype MacBook Air that was sold and the prototype iPods have ALL been IDENTICAL to the final product.

I hope to god this is fake.
Perhaps apple made a prototype for the hardware, and just put it in an ugly case because it was quicker and easier to produce on a short time frame, and now they are working on getting the same hardware into a nice designed chassis.

If apple came out with this, I'd be embarrassed to be seen with it.

I like it...

I hope this is in the direction of the final look, which may actually open up the iPhone for the business professional.

The models thus far have all been to plasticticky, and the look needs to become more industrial.

I like the looks.

But it needs some retouching; the buttons to be exact.

And this doesn't really look Apple-y. Hopefully it's just a prototype.

That looks about as non-Apple looking as you could get and still have idiots believe that that might be real. It just doesn't look Apple-ish enough to me...

Why not? Fakes put all kinds of crap on devices to make them seem legit.

This is a fake. Not anywhere near Apple's design style, the specs don't make sense, and the story is dubious. Someone "loses" it AND it won't boot? Not likely. Even if it were remote wiped, it would still boot.

*Sorry

If it were real it would not have all that on there. I can guarantee you that the FCC has NOT approved the new iPhone yet.

Well I know the iPad was actually delayed by the FCC, so I thought it was possible, did anyone else also notice that the phone is banged up and appears heavily used? For something that cant be more than 2 months old it looks like its been through hell. Honestly if it were a little thinner and had different buttons on the side minus the weird home button it wouldnt be that bad.

I don't know if this is real or not, but when I first saw the pics the first thing that came to my mind was "wow that's thick as hell". Then I took a look at the headphone jack, and assuming (I know, I know) that it's still a 3.5mm jack and comparing it to how it looks on my 3G this thing started looking pretty thin actually. Maybe it's just an optical illusion I can't really tell. Even if it is as thin as it could be I don't think having such sharp angles would be comfortable.

Not it... unless it is an early stage prototype where they play with an almost finished OS 4.0 and try to cram as much crap as they can into the device before trimming it and making it look worthy of bearing apple logo.

Thats what I think:

Why should anyone make such a good fake? Also why does the old pictures (mysteriously and really fast removed from twitter two monts ago, so no Apple blog/news site could post about the pictures) have no Apple logo and the new ones have an Apple logo ->because Apple need to have the finish design, because they have to produce the new iPhones in May to release the iPhone in Juny.
No faker would produce two different (but same) iPhone fake pictures in a time periode of two months.

EPIC FAIL........if this is the new iPhone. :p
looks fat, unattractive, fake, fat,

The iPhone 3G/3GS looks also fat! - When I saw the prototyp of the 3G before the announcement, I also thought like everyone, it would look really unattractive.

After reading more, i can't even believe that Engadget posted this BS. All the pictures look like crap, although this story does give me a chuckle. This amusing little crude mockup of an Apple product is a real knee-slapper. Especially the story that it was found on the floor of a bar xD. Someone's trying to get their 15 minutes...
