It's far more sensible to have a headphone socket towards one end of the device rather than the centre.
Why? Personally I actually prefer it to sit in the middle, albeit possibly for aesthetic reasons. But it does seem to make it somewhat less likely that the headphone plug experiences lateral force. As a reminder:

If they produced gear that was superior to a 3.5mm connected equivalent, people would buy it. This is not a chicken and egg situation. It's not like manufacturers are not producing Lightning headphones because the connector does nopt exist/works. Bluetooth and Lightning connectivity exists today. You don't have to force a market. By and large, the market has spoken, and the market still prefers the 3.5mm connector for wired.
That doesn't mean you can't try to influence and shape a market to produce an outcome that is favourable to yourself.

Lightning headphones can only be used with iOS devices, and using it means you can't charge your phone. That is a major disadvantage right there, and I can't see many people voluntarily opting for it regardless of whatever merits it has. Any potential market would be too small to sustain itself at any rate.

As the saying goes - the best way to predict the future is to create it. You want a future that favours lightning and Bluetooth over traditional wired, go and take it by the horns and make it yours.

That's business. Those who can shape the battlefield to suit their whims, do it.

Wait... So now you're telling me i will no longer be able to listen to my music and charge my iPhone at the same time? This is BS!

It might possibly be connected to your headphones at all times, thus merely extending the length of your headphone cable by 5 cm. You would not have to think about it too much.

True and thanks for making me feel a little better. Still, I do believe it is not an elegant solution. Though it is very Apple-like kind of decision. Contemporary apple of course.

So stupid and unnecessary.
Sometimes I wish we would all tell Apple to go to hell and just not buy any of their products for a month to get in their head how obnoxious they're getting

They probably will given that, whether Android fanboys accept it or not, Android manufacturers copy Apple with whatever they do, hence why we see camera bumps on almost all flagships now. Some manufacturers have already removed the headphone jack due to the rumors of Apple doing it, similar to how 'iWatch' rumors sparked companies like Samsung to release a smartwatch first so they can beat Apple to it.

And this is where your argument falls completely apart.

If Apple removes the 3.5mm Jack when it doesn't have to, for no other reason than to "prepare" User's for a push to go wireless, then Android will double down and advertise that it's flagships can do everything the flagship iPhone does, while being as small as the iPhone, and has a 3.5mm headphone jack. They will advertise, as many people argue here, that they're giving the customer the choice, since they will be able to use higher quality USB-C audio devices, or the 3.5mm Jack, as they chose. And they will siphon of millions of iPhone customers, revenue for which Apple will never make up out of Lightning licenses and Beats headphones.

The only way this move makes sense is because Apple is running out of internal space to add improvements and features, and their competition is in the same boat. And that is the only reason Android will remove the 3.5mm headphone jack, not to follow Apple. And for the record, Samsung had smartwatches on the market long before there were rumors about Apple making one.

The Lightning power cord always gets stressed out on my iPad. I'm on my third power able now. I'm not alone in this. Two of my friends experienced the same. So I'm wondering how the Lightning headphone cord will do...
I guess the key to cable longevity is always unplug first before picking up the device (and don't pick up the device by the cable or leave the device anywhere during charging where it might get kicked off its location).

They have to include new lightning headphones in the box and sell this dongle separately for those who want to keep their original headphones. I don't want to carry a freaking dongle around to be able to listen to music... and i will loose it in a blink of an eye.
apple no dongles in the box please!!!! :(

Fine for me. Really frustrated with having to untangle the cable everytime I use my old headset.
I've been using bluetooth earphones for a year now and never looked back.
Besides, Motorola did it already with their recent flagship phone yet nobody's complaining.lol

Did no one notice that the lightning end is just kind of floating around like a turd in the toilet? 1000% fake.

Because nobody here (Macrumors readers) use Moto?

p.s. Just "Moto" not "Motorola".

Read again, did I say "no one in Macrumors complaining"? I didn't, it means I'm referring to the general public(worldwide).

"Besides, Motorola did it already with their recent flagship phone yet nobody's complaining.lol"
Read my sentence again. I used 'Motorola' because I referred to the company who made it and not the model of the phone. It won't be appropriate if I say "Besides, Moto did it already with their recent flagship phone"
Complete product name is: Motorola Moto Z

Try to analyze first before correcting someone.

The first thing I would do with this is look for an extender.

*chuckles* he's got a funny voice..

That's fun. Let me try mine.
My be an alien is complaining about his headphoneless phone. You say nobody right. You didn't say nobody on earth. You have to be more specific.
Second point, Motorola is no more. Lenovo bought motorola brand and now they call this phone Lenovo Moto Z. Please try researching before you correct someone.

I'm all for the removal of the 3.5mm jack it's had a great run but until it is gone we won't see a strong push for superior wireless headphones/technology.

I just don't get why Apple won't wait for the anniversary iPhone next year, take out the headphone jack and add a USB-C and throw in some beats wireless headphones and everyone is happy (well sort of).

This^ I appreciate the 3.5 Jack, but it will be deleted by the iPhone 7 or the 2017 iPhone. It's days are numbered and it makes sense. With the Jack being deleted, it allows for a possible larger battery or wireless charging.

Bluetooth is finally becoming the universal and with Bluetooth 5 on the cusp, it's logical at this point. If Apple does delete the Jack, will they provide an adapter? Will Apple provide the option for the user for a quality set of Bluetooth EarPods in the box? I think everyone knows it will be deleted, but how will Apple address and remedy the alteration? What the costs are is another question.

I fear for Apple. iPhone sales are in deep decline- Samsung is eating them alive, the iPhone 6 is the ugliest thing Apple have made for decades, the "iPhone 7" is just an iPhone 6 with less functionality - and one which requires a freaking dongle to work.

This company is badly off track, and Cook seems incapable of fixing it.

Except if the leaks are correct then Apple is using the space taken by the headphone jack for a second speaker. It's stupid beyond belief.

Wires will never go away because they're fundamentally better than any wireless tech can ever be. Ethernet, or something just like it, will exist forever. Same with speaker cabling. Wires provide a pure signal unhindered by interference or bandwidth issues. They're simply better.

I don't know what percentage of smart phone users have wired headphones, but I imagine it's close to 100%. Apple will alienate literally millions of people with this move. It's possibly the stupidest thing they've ever done.

Sucks to be you then.
Why? Samsung phones are pretty damn good now. Their industrial design is far ahead of the ugly iPhone 6, and they're built extremely well.

At this point, it's envitable, it will be deleted. It's just a matter of acceptance. I, personally, would welcome the second speaker. It would benefit me in multiple ways. To each their own.
