Here's why I think it's real

I believe these are ad mockups using early prototype renders of the phone for the graphic elements. Why?

The detail given on the Video Chat feature.

If it is a fake, and the person was going to put in VideoChat as a super fanboy feature, it would be straight up videochat to everyone's wildest dreams. Instead what we get, is a very realistic model for how it would work in concert with AT&T: phone-to-phone video chat via 3G (likely using your regular cell minutes for the audio portion, and 3G for the video), or phone-to-computer video chat via WiFi.

This is likely how such integration would work; otherwise AT&T would lose a ton of money as people used up massive data bandwidth chatting with computer users, without using any of their cell minutes.

Now, this could be the work of clever (and logical) hoaxster, most definitely, but this doesn't hold up either. Why? The missing sleep/hold button. Is any hoaxster that is going to to go the work of thinking through the logistical implementation of video chat really make such a rookie (and easily reparable) mistake as leaving off a button?

I don't think so.

Now, for those at engadget that may be claiming there is no camera... I think it is starting to stand to reason that Apple may be releasing two phones: one like the current phone, but with 3G, at a 200 price point, and one at the 499/599 price points, with video chat and other goodies.

Just my two cents (and hopeful wishing, to be sure), but I think we are going to see Video Chat on Monday. Apple has made too many preparations; they are clearly anticipating a massive turnout, and frankly -- not enough people would care about the same old iPhone, just now with 3G. There is going to be a killer feature on this thing that makes it a must have, and I'm laying my money on VideoChat.

It's what would get me to upgrade my 1st Gen iPhone. :)

Also, just because these photos are opened in Photoshop, it doesn't mean they were created in photoshop. They could be created in anything and just opened for viewing in photoshop.

The only thing that seems to call this out as bogus is the fact that this layout is being done in Photoshop. No agency or studio creates layouts with type in Photoshop. It would be done in InDesign.

Well are we sure that it's Photoshop? I just opened up InDesign and compared it to the pictures. I won't say it was definitely made on InDesign but i don't think we can rule it out. I'm sure i could have missed something obvious however. Please prove me wrong :)

Interestingly, the grey model is slightly wider than the red model...

Didnt Apple take out a patent on embedding a video camera in an lcd screen? Didnt the Apple Telefonica/Spain rumor mention a video camera?

Valid pints

I hope this IS a fake. Why? Two reasons:

(1) Wifi symbol is on the screen, withOUT the 3G symbol
(2) Two words: "Video Chat"

There's been a lot of talk lately about "Video CALLS." If real, this image might suggest that nothing more than iChat's "Video CHAT" feature will be added to the phone, and only when on Wifi (not even 3G). Personally, I'd get alot more out of Video CALLS than Video Chat, particularly as the number of iPhone users continues to rise.

But then again, a "Both/And" scenario would probably be best.

Thoughts?
=rg=

I'm hoping they make VIDEO CHAT available via wifi and 3G, that way, when as technology and bandwidth increases, the features will already be on the iPhone2. I admit, I will be extremely pissed off it's an iChat only feature. But the realistic side of me believe's it will be some WiFi only feature.

It's Photoshop. The tool pallet on the left proves it. InDesign doesn't have a magic wand tool - only Photoshop has this one.

Yep - it's all about Adium.
I think that if Apple is releasing iChat for Windows as well (which would be logical and is directly said in these documents), then it's clearly going to be a new version of iChat which has "languished" pretty much since the one guy that made it left Apple. That means all bets are off on which is the best.

Maybe Apple even bought up Adium and integrated it all in the new iChat.

And if they want iChat to become a standard, maybe they even open-sourced it.

iChat on Windows really would be great......not for me, but to force upon PC users i chat with.

It appears the black one has a lock button on top and the red one does not. I'm calling fake, but I'd be happy if they're real.

Well, they are fake either way. They're definitely not photograpic images. They would be CG anyway for an ad as clean as this.

Look at the Apple logo for example. The reflection is exactly the same on both phones. I would figure the logo would be an actual chrome logo like on the standard iPhone. And the one in the ad is meant to appear to be one, but it's the standard fake chrome reflection they use for other print materials.

So, accepting it's CG, then maybe they haven't placed the "power" button yet. Does seem a bit odd though. But even if it were fake the same questions would arise, since they're probably the same model, just with different color properties applied.

you know, i dont really understand all you guys and your wishful thinking, but seriously - wireless cellular, ota videoconferencing? in the usa at least? c'mon.

have you seen or heard of any concrete initiative on it, by any major us carrier? have there been any concrete demos and not simply pipe dreams of 'eventual' videoconferencing? i haven't. having cellular ota roll out of videoconferencing woul require some major rumblings in the industry, we would have def heard some announcements or press releases of something. so the rest of the world has it. how long did it take the us carriers to 'eventually' roll out 3g networks.

if apple somehow pulls it off, awesome. it will def be fun to use. but i highly doubt its going to happen. alot of the features of the last iphone weren't 'new', but in typical apple fashion we're simply revolutionized. i don't know if apple would take it upon themselves to introduce such a new technology to the usa.

If you don't know what you are talking about then don't talk about it.

Video Conf. is not some advanced alien technology. It has been used by millions of users worldwide since years and is no rocket science to implement. In the case of the iPhone, it requires no more than porting an optimized version of iChat and a 3G network.

If anyone could pull it off, it would be Apple.

That wouldn't explain why it had guides pulled to align the various elements. This file was built in Photoshop, and thus unlikely it's real because as said before, Apple wouldn't set the type in Photoshop.

Many AT&T phones already do video calls over the 3G network. I've tried it and it works very well. The only problem is that it is only one-way. If Apple tries to revoltuionize video calls they're going to have to do at least two things:

1) At least 2-way video, preferably up to 3 people.
2) A fairly priced implementation that doesn't increase the cost of the current iPhone plans. I like the idea of it just counting as voice minutes with unlimited data. Right now, AT&T charges$ 4.99 a month for 25 minutes of Video Share usage or $9.99 a month for 60 minutes of usage. With the service already being measured in minutes, its logical to expect it to continue this way.

Here is one of the many video-capable AT&T phones:

Anything significant about 1:25pm?

1:25pm EDT = 10:25am PDT... That Carlos dude looks to be in NYC.

Jobs' keynote starts at 10am... Maybe it's being carefully orchestrated to be premiered at 10:25?

What if this guy is right? it is a possible thing since the keynote starts at 10 am...... i also am wondering where the lock button is and, also, lets see a 64 GB one. Even if there are no 32's yet. and an MSN client.

The CAMERA:

So, these pictures look fairly authentic, but think about this: The two camera lenses are in the EXACT same position on the phone. One lens is pointing out the back, another faces forward (Video Chat). Anyone that knows anything about cameras knows that the phone is simply too thin to have two cameras in opposing directions on something that small. It's just impossible.

my two cents.

Here's 2 cents back at ya...

You say..."Anyone that knows anything about cameras knows that the phone is simply too thin to have two cameras in opposing directions on something that small. It's just impossible."

I say.... Anyone who knows anything about APPLE, knows that just about anything is possible.;)

I hope these images are at least close to the real deal... I'm ready to extend my AT&T contract another 2 years.....:apple:

If you look at the tool palette on the pic that shows the layout (with guides, etc.), the palette is clearly from Photoshop. It includes all the image editing tools, but not layout tools. It makes this seem a little fishy.

But I do like the phone, real or not.

Does anyone suspect that theirs a chance, that there were goofs made on purpose just so he can laugh at all the doubters...I would probably do that if I had the inside info.
