Were the Duals dual core or dual processor? I'd forgotten all about the G4 and G5.
My PowermacG5 has two, single core 2.0Ghz processors, air cooled. I also have a PowermacG4 that has two, single core 1.0Ghz processors, air cooled.

No Sierra window? I don't blame you, maybe it's better to wait for the theme pack to come out.
Yanno, I really like the way yours looks and it would match my 08 unibody intel macbook but with these aging PPC machines (especially PMG4 boxes), I am concerned with bloating up the OS with stuff that may impact performance, so I tend to shy away from that sort of thing unless I hear from you guys that it doesn't impact your G5 performance ;)

It doesn't impact performance at all. Too much stuff can, but I've had it installed for almost the whole day today and it doesn't slow down your Mac at all. :)

that's an awful business model... let people make their own decisions about what they want. You can try and sway their decision with persuasion, but forcibly shoving it down their throats certainly wont make them want it.

Such a cool box. Even though my PMG5 is faster, I love this QSG4. The little PPC engine that could as far as I'm concerned :D

I never understood the appeal of those types of changes. My system still reports 10.5.8, since that's what it actually is. Everyone has their preference, I guess.

And here's my iBook G4:

At first glance I'd think you were running Mavericks. :)

Funny note about that software-wise, my PowerBook does have updated binaries from Mavericks (compiled from the public source code), as well as additional resources, which made it end up like that.

IIRC, I read that spec-wise, the DP 1GHz is the highest a QS will run. Even though mine came with a single 733MHz, it accepted the DP 1GHz no problem and I noticed a bump in speed although the 1.5GHz PC133 was the best upgrade in regards to performance. I was curious where you got your DP 1.8GHz? Did it require a firmware update or could you just swap it like I did the DP 1GHz with the Single 733MHz? I saw faster processors for the MDD for example but was under the impression that they were not backwards compatible. Is this true?

I would like to give Leopard a shot but am waiting until I straighten out a Sata1 solution for this G4. Truth be told, the IDE drive is not terribly slow as-is. I mean this Tiger G4 boots up faster than my Leopard G5 DP2.0GHz although the G5 certainly is faster in TFF.

The CPU I am using is a Sonnet Duet. It's dual 1.8Ghz processors. G4 7447As. It's essentially the holy grail of aftermarket CPUs you can get for a G4.

Newertech only made one CPU better than it and it was a dual 1.8Ghz with 7448 G4 CPUs. Those are EXTREMELY rare and very expensive if you find one.

There IS a 2.0Ghz G4 processor out there, but it's only a single processor. None of the aftermarket companies ever made a 2.0Ghz dual.

I was lucky to find my Sonnet for $200 or so from a vendor who wasn't gouging on eBay.

I have a Geekbench score that's faster than the 1.6Ghz PowerMac G5.

There were four aftermarket CPU manufacturers. GigaDesigns, Sonnet, NewerTech and PowerLogix. Of those four only Sonnet and NT really had success.

If you're looking for an upgrade I'd stay away from GigaDesigns. Their manufacturing process lacked quality control. There's a reason Sonnet is the Apple of the aftermarket market. They are expensive as hell, but their design and quality are superb.

EDIT: Oh, you will have to flash firmware if you want to use one of these. But it's pretty easy.

Interested in which binaries you were able to compile from the public Mavericks source ? Using the Xcode and gcc on 10.5.8 ?

Been struggling with Homembrew and MacPorts for quite some time .

Most of the UNIX utilities (bash, nano, vim, emacs), replacement Java VMs, Python, perl, the Chess App, CUPS subsystem, SMB, all the gnu utilities, openssl, SSH, ntp, curses, and so on. Resources came from the Desktop Wallpaper, CoreTypes, and window graphics off Mavericks.

Yes, compiled with Xcode and GCC. Homebrew is also on the system, but not used very often.

I actually published some of the bash and nano binaries back when a rather major CVE was put out:

http://repo.furcode.co/index.php?dir=macOS/bash_OSX/

Thinking about it, it might be a neat project to make an "update" pack to replace the aging Leopard binaries with shiny new ones (that aren't as vulnerable).
