Still need to decorate some more. Maybe a larger poster/print above the couch and a small shelf over the TV. Could always use suggestions from someone with a better sense of style than myself though. :D

Off topic: I got a Motorola DVR box via COX Cable a few years ago I was wondering do I need to upgrade the box for HD outputs or do you think it's included I just need to throw down an HDMI cable. Is there anyway to tell if it can output HD by serial number or anything. I need to get rid of this 480 :D

Sure, any 12v DC supply will do the job. Yellow wires are +12v, black/brown wires are ground.

Clayj's Home Theatre, Version 2.0

There have been quite a few changes to my home theatre since November 2006, when I last posted in this thread... so here we go again!

IMAGE ONE (LIVING ROOM)
Not really much has changed here, because there wasn't much to change. But the Runco PL-50c 50" plasma TV (circa 2000) has been replaced by a Samsung LN46A650 46" LCD TV with full 1080p resolution, HDMI inputs, the works. The speakers are still the same Miller & Kreisel 750THX speakers (in a 6.1 configuration) I've had since 2000.

IMAGE TWO (BEHIND SOFA IN LIVING ROOM)
The most noticeable change here is that the Xbox 360 is gone. It's not that I don't have it anymore; but it has been moved to the media closet. Also, the Panja Viewpoint remote control system has been replaced by a Logitech Harmony 1000 universal remote. The Panja was nice, but I hated having to pay someone $75 an hour to program it; I can make all the changes I want to the Harmony, and it's a much lighter remote, too.

IMAGE THREE (MEDIA CLOSET)
This is where most of the changes have taken place. From top to bottom in the Avrak, the components are:

Sony STR-DA5400ES AV receiver (replaces B&K AVR-307)
Xbox 360 Elite
Samsung BD-P1500 Blu-ray player (replaces Sony DVP-S9000ES DVD player)
Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8300HD HD DVR/cable box
Sony DVP-CX985V 400 DVD changer
Monster power controller
Cable modem + D-Link network switch (for Xbox 360, Blu-ray player, and Elgato)
Elgato HDHomeRun (for viewing and recording ATSC/QAM HDTV channels on Mac Pro)

The old Mitsubishi S-video VCR and Roku PhotoBridge are gone, not to be replaced. The Sony LocationFree TV base station has been moved to my bedroom, since the best video format it supports is S-video and nothing I use now supports that; I may add a Slingbox PRO-HD to the rack later this year, if I figure out a good way to integrate it into the system. The Xbox 360, Blu-ray player, and cable box all use HDMI to connect to the receiver; the problem of how to get HDMI to my living room, when I did not have HDMI wiring installed (HDMI didn't exist in 2000) and installing it would have been really expensive, was solved through the use of a clever device from Gefen called an HDMI-over-BNC converter. (One end of the device is visible above the shelf, the small blue box. There's a similar box behind the TV in the living room.)

Hope you like it!

I finally picked up an HDMI cable for my DVR box now I can finally use the TV to it's advantage. Turns out I had to change some settings in the MOT menu for some channels to not be forced on the 4:3 ratio rather 16:9. My parents TV also did this with the DVR so they never watched the HD channels. I changed it for them as well and they were amazed at how nice the picture looked.

Now I just need to find a cabinet or some sort to organize everything along with the cables.

Congratulations clayj. Why do you have so many Rubik's Cubes?
That's not even all of them. The two on top are original Rubik's Cubes (made by Ideal back in 1981 or so). Nothing feels quite like the originals. The all-orange one is a promo I got from a company here in Charlotte (it's all orange, so it's always solved). I also have a very rare Rubik's Calendar, a Rubik's Revenge (4x4x4), an Alexander's Star, a couple of pyramids, and I think I still have a Rubik's Snake around here somewhere.

Here's mine as of today, but I'm going to be making some changes pretty soon.

In the picture you can see:

  • Samsung LNT4661 46" LCD TV
  • Tivo HD 40GB, plus 500GB DVR Extender Hard Drive and 802.11G wireless adapter
  • Sony STR-DE997 7.1 Receiver
  • Apple TV 40GB
  • Panasonic DMP-BD35K Blu-Ray Player
  • B&W DM602 Speakers
  • On the floor near the left speaker, there's a SubDude which will hold the BIC PA120 sub I ordered a couple weeks ago (coming this week!)
  • misc clutter that I'll be getting rid of soon

Within the coming months, I plan on upgrading my receiver to something better (looking at Denon, Onkyo, and Marantz among others...any suggestions?), as well as doing something with Surround Sound. I live on the first floor of a two-story condo, so my options are limited as far as wiring is concerned. I'm looking at several different receivers, and I'm thinking about getting a Polk SurroundBar 50. If I did that, I'd have to get rid of the B&W's completely and put them somewhere else, but I think it'll work better overall. Plus I'll have more space in my living room!

Some of you guys are killing me with your wiring...how do you sleep at night???:D

Good it's not just me :) Even seeing just the two big wires going from my fronts to the receiver bugs me!

Jeff, that is SO awesome! Thanks for sharing. :D

Thanks! It's the first time my wife and I have had a basement in our home so we wanted to take advantage of the space.

It would have been a more LOTR themed basement but there isn't much large-scale LOTR stuff out there (like the 1:1 scale Darth Vader, Boba Fett, and Han Solo in Carbonite) and Lucasfilm really did a great job liscensing their stuff. Tolkien's estate seems to always put the kabosh on large scale collectables whereas Lucasfilm did a great job over the years in this respect. One of my favorite areas of the basement are the three highlighted signed posters from the LOTR trilogy down the hallway leading to the theater and the theater entrance which is a motion-activated lighted glow in the dark "Mines of Moria" entrance.

I'm glad you liked it!

Updated setup. I went a different type of route for hiding the wires. I like it:

42" Samsung 1080p LCD
Motorola HD box with DVR
1 TB Time Capsule
40 GB tv
Soundsticks II
80 GB PS3 (down below)
Ion portable USB turntable (it's on top of the cable box. I made that box to cover it. and yes, I'm a girl.)

I know the TV looks like it's mounted really high, but it isn't. It is as low as I can hang it, anyway, due to a light switch that's behind the canvas.

My iMac is connected to my HDTV by very long dvi-hdmi and optical cables and runs Plex. All my movies are on a drobo. The receiver is Harmon Kardon and the speakers are ADS, a wonderful "hand-me-down" from my father-in-law. I currently am running a 3.0 setup, I'm wary about a sub annoying my neighbors (I live in an apt). I have rear speakers but I'm worried how I'm going to get cable to them. I want to use the super thin cable that they use for HTiBs, but I don't know if there will be impedance issues. Any comments?
