You mean XR DPI looks awful?

It has the lowest DPI of the three.

Probably good enough for most people, but I’d prefer at least ~400 i.e. the same as 6s+.

Beyond that we are talking about increasingly diminishing returns.

Some Samsung phone boasted a crazy >550 DPI but out of box it rendered everything at 1080p to avoid draining the battery :-D

Well, OLED and LCD ppis aren't quite comparable like that, since you're comparing four subpixels each with three each. Leaving aside actual visual perception (which you can't do in practice), you'd have to theoretically multiply OLED ppis with 3/4s.

Even if the 2018 XR has a Ram bump from 3GB to 4GB for the 2019 11R, that alone is something worth noting for an upgrade.

Lol not really. By the time the difference between 3gb and 4gb ram becomes relevant, in about 10 years time, both the XR and its direct successor will be past their sell by dates

OK — do you actually use this setup? We've had this idea since Ubuntu Phone way back when (and with Windows Continuum later), but it never seems to have caught on.

(Maybe because having an external monitor, keyboard and mouse but not also having a computer hooked up anyway is kind of a strange setup?)
<snip>
Though the Dex experience is suboptimal, I can easily envision an iPhone that switches effectively from iOS when handheld, then to full-blown MacOS when used with monitor/keyboard/mouse.

Maybe it’s three years out but of course it’s completely feasible, technically. Obviously it isn’t going to match a higher wattage CPU in sustained performance. But it would be well suited to MS Office-like, bursty and other less demanding workloads. (Similar to the 12” MacBook.)

It's not relevant if I use or not. My answer was in general.
I have been following Dex's development closely and Samsung made some nice improvements with this feature taking in consideration it's newest iterations.
Here's a nice presentation of it.

I mean… I know what RAM is useful for.

But the original assertion was that a fast CPU is only useful for "bragging rights", so I countered that a high amount of RAM, per se, isn't inherently more useful than that either.
In my opinion right at this moment, reaching a no compromise Ram limit is more relevant in terms of usability and future proofing than 10-15% bumps in CPU performance. CPUs have been more than fast enough for years.

I hope iPhones 11 will have at least 5gb ram. It will make it a better device.

I have no complaints about my current XR. Not in speed, RAM, screen res. iOS 13 added basically a nice 3D Touch replacement and that was the only real thing other than universal Portrait Mode that I missed. I’ll be keeping my XR for probably another full year and will wait for the 2020 iPhones to launch with updated design.

Who needs them to!? Affinity has had their products out for awhile now and they are awesome. I have to think the only reason Adobe even announced it is because Affinity was starting to eat their lunch.

Affinity releases a fully baked product and Adobe scrambles to play catch up. Seems to me they didn’t have anything ready to go.

I’m just moving along waiting for another SE sized phone with reasonable price. Or a stand alone watch.

Standalone Apple Watch already exist when it debuted with Series 3 using cellular capabilities.... You can easily keep you’re iPhone at home while answering calls or text when traveling away from home. I do it as much as I can... I highly doubt Apple creates a Apple Watch that isn’t tied to the iPhone.

Think of it as iMessage, whereas it locks users to the iPhone... Apple Watch tied to the iPhone, gives a similar approach to iMessage... locks in the user.

As Apple usually doesn’t increase RAM capacity gratuitously, I think we can assume there’s a reason for the bump. (AR glasses anyone?)

1GB is no longer supported, and 2GB isn’t long for this world either. At ten years, I think perhaps you overestimate the lifespan of 3GB.

Yeah, I would've said the same thing 1 or 2 yrs ago, but then I got an SE (as an upgrade from a 6, just because of the form factor). It feels almost as big, but the screen feels a lot smaller. I prefer a smaller phone for when I ride my bike (shirt back pockets are kind of small) or when I commute to work, but this one, at least to me, it's not worth it. It's a good phone, it does everything I need it to do, but I feel like I'm losing something, like there's not enough phone. I bought it because I like the design, but I don't think it's a good phone to use in 2019.

I think most iPhone users would gladly trade the processing power for a cheaper iPhone price. It's unlikely Apple will be able to do anything with those higher Geekbench scores that any of the Android flagship smartphones can't do. What do those Geekbench scores give iPhone users in actual use? Bragging rights? With Android flagship smartphones having more than twice the system RAM than an iPhone, those Android phones can outperform the iPhone by opening apps just as fast and holding a dozen of those apps open. Apple can't even market the power the A-series chips deliver to sell more iPhones. Nearly all consumers now want less expensive smartphones and Apple can't deliver that to consumers. Although it really doesn't matter in the real world, but Apple will be the only major smartphone company to not offer 5G connectivity which is going to be the big marketing buzzword this year. The absence of 5G will be used as leverage to show how weak Apple is as a smartphone company. The iPhone will be said to be behind the curve and most of the internet will agree.

I'll bet Apple won't have any AR advantage this year which is rather disappointing. There isn't anything Apple can offer to consumers that most Android smartphones don't already offer. Apple carries the cursed name of the iPhone Company and it's basically a total drag on Apple's value as iPhone sales dwindle every quarter. The Galaxy Note 10 has basically been named as the best smartphone of 2019 as most reviewers know Apple has nothing to beat it. It's rather amazing how Samsung can build a dozen models of smartphone while Apple struggles to build three models with limited features. I often wonder if Apple is even trying to compete with rival companies. Too bad. It just allows Apple to be called a loser company. It's going to be interesting to see what Apple has to say at the iPhone Event this year. "This is the best iPhone Apple has ever made." Nobody wants to hear that sentence, anymore.

I feel like this has bee done for years and years and Apple is still making a fortune with it. Android OEMs have sat and mocked Apple and we’re still here talking about what if’s.

I did a week with the Note 10+ and it is a fantastic device but it lacks in several key areas. Using android auto resulted in a mixed bag of stability, sometimes features would work and sometimes critical things would not. App response to presses on the touch screen felt a bit laggy, some apps buttons just didn’t work.

It’s still a great platform and a great device but I don’t think there is going to be much shaking in the smartphone market in the next two years that is going to force an exodus to android.

5G is useless to 99% of people at this point and even on the note 10 it requires another $150 to upgrade to the phone that has it.

It's not about the tech company but its potential customers.

iPhone and Windows both skipped 9 supposedly because 9 is an unlucky number in Japan, although it could have been for other reasons too.

Even your username references ancient superstition surrounding numbers.

I read somewhere that Microsoft skipped windows 9 because of a bunch of hard coded system checks in random legacy software that would look for “windows 9X” and then configure accordingly assuming they were running on either win 95 or win 98. This could have led to major compatibility issues with legacy software so they just moved to 10 instead.

This focus on benchmark logic grunt is becoming a bit meaningless as the A series from Apple is approaching laptop parity in cpu power.
I have run some benchmarks, purely CPU based, where an iPhone XR beat an iMac (quad core 3.2 GHz) by a considerable amount, both using all available cores (2+4 vs. 4). The iPhone XR reduced clock speed earlier, but was still faster.

The iPhone X phones are all quite expensive, so if you could attach a monitor, mouse and keyboard and have a full desktop computer would make absolutely sense. Or imagine something looking like a MacBook, but just having screen, keyboard, mousepad and a slot where you plug in your phone. (With a desktop, it's fine to have the phone on the table, but with a laptop-like design, you'd want the phone stashed away in a safe place, so you can use just the laptop).

I think this might all become reality once Apple has a good number of iOS apps optimised for desktop use. Currently this is "optimised for desktop on x86-64/macOS", but once that's done they just add another switch "optimised for desktop on arm/iOS".

Nice to see the comments from Poole indicating this could be legitimate.

Here's hoping for 6 GB 128 GB OLED iPhones!
It wouldnt be xr if ram is 6gb lol
And if they put 6 gb in xr 2 then 11 will have 8 right ??
Which doesnt seem right

I'd prefer 400 DPI if it came for free. It doesn't. The 400 DIP isn't worth the difference in cost to me.

For anyone interested, Geekbench 5 launched today and is free on iOS until 10th Sept.

I downloaded it and ran it on my XR and got some weird scores:

Yeah me too. Looks like they've reset the 'benchmark' as it were.

Same for Android

That’s the new Geekbench 5.

They updated their website yesterday. MacRumors posted about the release today.

looks like RAM is the new feature. Man they're so stingy with it, They doll out like it's made of gold or something. Just give us 8GB and be done with it

iPhones have been FAST ENOUGH for at least five years. Not sure what else can be done except get better efficiency and battery life out of chips. People use phones primarily for social media, taking pictures and texting.

So this year the war is all about pictures and video.

So prepare the trolls for disappointment and the usual Apple is doomed meanwhile Apple will continue to take in their billions as usual.

iOS 13 is going to be the star of the show this year. That alone is giving up to 2X performance on devices.

Of course, it's a flagship phone that isn't even a year old yet.

I typically keep my iPhones 3-4 years... which is why I'll probably wait with my 7 Plus (with 3 GB RAM and 8 month old battery) until 2020, to get 5G. A 120 Hz ProMotion screen would also be a bonus.

Last year's A12 is already TSMC's 7 nm.

Yes, sorry it should have read “5nm SoC ” for 2020.

Performance should increase by 15% handily.
