Excellent point. TS has a pretty good track record at this point. I would think their prediction of a G4 speedbump is a major blow to the credibility of Powerbook G5 rumors.
Come on, don't you think someone at Apple might have leaked the G4 speed bump to TS just to see the egg on face when Apple releases a 2.0GHz G5 PB instead.

The thought had crossed my mind, too. I just didn't want to say it. :p
That is the reason by the way that we haven't bought one. We don't want our new books to have a sudden next-week price drop or to be "outperformed" by a book that costs the same only a couple of weeks after we just got ours. Or at least that's why I haven't gotten one. I should have bought one last November, but look what MacRumors has done to me, it's almost February now and I'm still waiting for an update... :D
I'd be very excited about a PowerBook G5, but will be more than satisfied by getting a new G4.

Do not cross examine your inner thoughts. So far your post have reflected pretty much what I've been doing. I really think your looking for news about what's next in the PowerBook line and then basing your next purchase on all gathered information, all pretty logical really, but for one thing, a Mac purchase is so D..n.. emotionally is it not? I can hardly stand this waiting.

That' really neat, maybe Apple just leaked the info to TS only, and they took the hook line and sinker, nice conspiracy theory, who knows? Then again that is just random thoughts, we will have to wait and see if Apple drops the case or an outcome to know the truth. Actually in todays world it is getting harder to find the truth. Love Conspiracy. Now, Let's conspire a new PowerBook.

That thought had crossed my mind, yes. It's always possible. I'm just saying, when it comes to track record, TS tends not to be wrong. If they are, I'm sure many folks will be very happy.

Hypertransport enabled PowerBook G5?

The Inquirer claims to have obtained a copy of a Digital Video and Multimedia News writeup from the Electronics Summit 2004, a conference held for electronics editors. The document lists some of the ‘design wins’ of different technologies, and seemingly references an Apple PowerBook G5.

"Number 7 on the list is Hypertransport, that well known technology used in AMD 64 chips and Power Macs," the publication says. "But perhaps the most interesting confirmation is that Hypertransport has a design win for the Apple PowerBook. This would appear to be confirmation that a G5 PowerBook is definitely turning up and that despite thermal problems, it is at least in the works."

HyperTransport technology, which is featured in Apple’s G5-based Power Mac systems, is a new high speed, high performance point-to-point link for interconnecting integrated circuits on a motherboard. It can be significantly faster than a PCI bus for an equivalent number of pins, and is primarily targeted for the IT and Telecomm industries. However, any application where high speed, low latency and scalability is necessary can potentially take advantage of HyperTransport technology.

FROM APPLEINSIDER

Hyper Transport is also a key piece of technology in the Motorola 8461 processor, the one based off the e600 core with an onchip memory controller!! Holy crap, 8461 powerbooks with 6 hour battery life, here I come!!!!

Buy it. There's always ebay, and macs tend to hold their value pretty well...even G4's vs new G5s. The current powerbook is a fine machine. And I mean fine like a 16-year-old hoo....umm...forget I said that.

I've used a current PB and think it is great. I'm tired of waiting also and might probably end up buying a current model, but with no regrets or whining if a new powerbook came out (and especially no "I prefer a Rev C G5") :p .
I KNOW that a current model fits my current needs and am just waiting until a go to the US to buy my laptop. Hopefully that will be about mid-February and if I'm lucky there will be something new by then. Of course if there was something new before that, I wouldn't wait another second.

1.) The 8641D won't even sample until the second half of this year, according to everything Freescale has said. Unless they've been lying about their roadmaps, it's not happening. Of course, they could have fooled everyone.

2.) The article specifically stated a Powerbook G5, and I don't think Apple would tarnish the brand they've built the G5 into by slapping that label on a 32-bit chip... People associate "G5" with "64-bit," which the 8641D is not. I suppose they could call it the G5M or something, but I'm doubtful.

I still use a 400mhz TiBook with 768mb of RAM, and am very happy with it. I run photoshop, dreamweaver, illustrator etc... Powerbook G4s are very nice machines. The G5 powerbook isn't as necessary as the PBG4 was at the time it was released. That said...

Everybody is waiting for the G5 Pbook... its an important mental milestone for Apple. Doesn't matter if you buy one or not, we want that G5 powerbook released just to prove it can be done. I think the powerbook team at apple probably feels similar... its a big mental milestone, one I'm sure they want to accomplish ASAP, leaked 1x1 pixel GIFS aside.

I also think if its coming this year, its coming at WWDC. The Powermac g5 was released there, the Powerbook G5 will be also. Its apple's MAJOR professional event. Macrumors members aside, who is going to buy more PBG5s ? Professionals or housewives? Web designers or teenage girls? Announce and sell to your target audience. I think the PBG4 was released at MacWorld ( correct me if i'm wrong)... but the G5 is such a big thing, its bigger than MacWorld. It'll be at WWDC, not a minute sooner.

Just my 2 cents... not that i wouldn't like to be wrong, but apple knows how big this is... the PBG5 isn't exactly a press-release kinda deal.

The BIG one

I agree with you about MWSF, but I want to point out that the "Apple faithful" are a fraction of Apple's market. The Powerbook G5 will be huge for us, sure, but the iMac G5 was much bigger for Apple, and that wasn't released during MacWorld *or* WWDC, and there was no conference or big event.

Actually, any event that Steve Jobs gives a keynote is a big event. He doesn't get up on stage unless he has something important to talk about. Macworld in Paris is a "big" event because he always seems to give a keynote at it; you'll remember that last year he was out because of his surgery and most certainly would have given the keynote if he could. The iMac G5 was a very big product announcement and the PB G5 is an even bigger one. Laptop sales are on an ever increasing sales trend and represent a large part of Apple's sales. The current PB are suffering because they are underpowered and G5 anticipating is building.

Pro Announcements

If they Announce a G5 PowerBook I also think it would be at the WWDC. However, recent years show that Apple attends less and less of these Mac Worlds, etc. I think they announce now whenever they feel like it. Come on Apple announce already!

i heard that some of the people that got to test the first PB G5s for a few months can't have kids now... Apple is rumored to suggest icepacks in ur pants during use
You do get excited about weird things, don't you? :D

OMG a 10 page thread for a typo error... nice publicity stunt though even if too early for the actual product :D Think we'd all be better off concentrating on what Freescale have up their sleeve for us next week ;)

THEN everyone who wants one will say "I'm not buying rev A. How long do we have to wait for rev B!?"

You said it first! :)

That's right, we can wait - as always- within the first 3 days of the release, "Powerbook G5, buy now or wait?" "When should we see a G6?" "and people whining because it didn't come with 16X superdrive, no 256 MB VRAM" That's a part of what we can see after the G5 PB comes... ohh! and the "Why the H*ll do I need a G5, I'm happy with my G4, most people buy this because of bragging reasons" (that one will come too, but not from me! :) )

Tech Discussions

Well, there's a good chance that a lot of people are going to rush out and buy the Powerbook G5 Rev.A (when it does come out :p ) and the Apple Discussion page will be flooded with complaints about various things not working right, and many people will criticise Apple and say,

"When is Rev.B coming out to fix these problems?"

That's my cynical view, but I will most likely buy a PBG5 if it's released at WWDC anyway :)

Your cynical view is interesting. Rev A G4 had DVD ejection problems and some other items, it took Apple about 1 and half to 2 months to fix those problems. From that point onward there were few problems with it, I still have one. So, maybe just wait until after it's out and the problems die down on the boards then buy. Of course that assumes one can wait.

It moves!

For what it's worth: Over here in Europe (I checked to Swiss and the French stores) the delivery time has gone down to 5 days (from 7-10). No, I'm not checking the site every 15 minutes... :p Just a few times a day. I am coping perfectly fine, trust me...

Arggh!

I think i'm going Crazy !

I was this close to getting a 1.5 15 inch powerbook G4 (my first dip in to the "other side"). I was just about to sign on the dotted line and I thought that I would just pop into some mac forums to see what was going down.......

Now i've cancelled my order and spent the last few days checking websites and fourums every 2 minutes. I'm going mad, becoming obsessesd even.

I want my Power Book!!! I want it soo bad.......

God help me...
