Do you think they'll come out with a G5 65nm chip sometime this year. Would it be called a G6?

No manufactuer is going to 65nm anytime soon. IBM, AMD, and Intel had a HELL of a time just getting the 90nm process down. There isn't some magic dust that IBM sprinkles on their fab plant that makes all their hardware turn to 65nm. Its a large and expensive process. It'll happen but prob not for a while. I thought I heard rumblings from Intel about 2007. Could be wrong.

Hm, she'll be uncovering something even bigger than last year! ;

I really do hope that the PowerBook G5 is coming very soon. It would be fantastic, and really bring Apple's offerings up to par.

Since ex-Beatle Paul McCartney is performing at half-time do you really think Apple will have any connection to this event? ;)

PB G5 is looking real good for WWDC since that is the next big event for a big announcement.

what happens when they do eventually bring out the g5 powerbook? what do we wait for then?

that's an easy one- we wait for them to ship… and then wait some more…

That's not new.

You can do 128 at UK and not at US. For once UK got something first!

No no sorry you can do it at US if you go to the customization page.
how do I delete this post?

I do hope you know that I was joking...

I wish they'd give us something a little bit more comprehensive, but things like the PM G5 fiasco don't just happen. Usually.

Wait a sec. Wasn't the GX expected to be dual and single core in the 3Ghz range. I don't see how or why Apple would put such a beast into a PowerBook.

I am sure that we can all agree that heat is the major roadblock facing the Powerbook G5. However, if you have a processor that can run reliably at 3.0GHz with the possiblity of it even being air cooled, it would be a perfect candidate for the powerbooks when clock at 2.0 to 2.3GHz.

I still tend to believe Apple when they made it clear the G5 Powerbook is still a long ways off because of heating issues. For Apple to affirm this delay, clearly indicates that they want people to keep buying the G4 Powerbooks and not wait for the G5. We will see updates in the G4 but the G5 Powerbook is still well over a year away.

There are some other significant signs that a g5 PB is coming.
  • I was just up in Cupertino and I saw a cloud that looked like and new PB, but it was darker gray. (Perhaps they will powder coat or anodize them, back to the Basic Black look).
  • They are not ordering PBs in France- and we know that the French are… French.
  • Lastly, so many people couldn’t be wrong.

Sounds an aweful bit like the Power Mac G5 fiasco where a web-tech put the G5 stats up next to the MDD G4 in the Apple Store the week before the G5 was introduced at the WWDC.

Things that make you go hmmmm......

That little leak was on a Thursday also if I remember correctly! :D

OMG POWERBOOKS111

Logically, a G5 before Tiger?

Here's a question....

Why would Steve talk about the upcoming Tiger OS, that is yet to come out, at MWSF, and not talk about a G5 PB,

and then....

release a G5 PB before they release Tiger?

You don't think they would highlight this marvel achievement at MW? Especially when people have been clamoring for the G5 PB and all it does efficiently is cook marshmallows, denim, and flesh in the blink of an eye?

Hmmm.... doesn't quite make sense. I've been wrong before, and I only hope that I continue to be wrong when it comes to this... I believe (key word - believe) that speedbump G4 or (less likely) a dual core G4 will emerge before a G5.

I hope next tuesday I am wrong.

I think at most the only thing the naysayer on the board have right is that Jobs won't announce a G5 PowerBook without a serious amount of pomp and polish to the event which = WWDC = Not for a while. At best you might see a small speedbump in the short term but nothing that is going to stand out from the rest of the speedbumps Apple has released over the last couple years.

Agreed. The only nagging thing is the fact that its been so long since the G4 powerbooks were updated-- last April, I think. Why let the line get so old? Why not do the little bump before Christmas, or at MWSF? This G5 stuff is getting completely out of hand; if the little G4 bumps come on Tuesday imagine the disappointment. Its going to be ugly. Personally, I'd probably prefer a 7448 G4 PB to a Rev. 1 G5, but I know I'm in the minority on that....

Jobs has been talking about Tiger since WWDC last year. Nothing new here. Also as someone else pointed out the first gen G5 PowerMac came out before Panther's launch. That being said. Again I need to reiterate how much of an ego Jobs has. There is simply no way in hell short of someone shooting Jobs and taking over the company that he is going to release the first G5 mobile solution anywhere other then a major event. Nope. The guy loves his grand announcements and this would probably be the biggest of them all.

PS- Just from a psychological standpoint I love watching Jobs's keynotes. I’ve only take a few classes back in my college days but even then just watching the guy is interesting.

Apple did this because they read macrumors.com and love to watch all the naive suckers go batcrap in these forums with their unrealistic doe-eyed folly.

Bring on the Freescale G4s in 64 bit goodness, all the power with none of the heat and better battery life!

I'm not disagreeing with anything you're saying, but you made me think of the statement from Shiller? in regards to the mini...
Basically they didn't want people to think of it as anything other than a second computer or an entry level...

what does that say about the future of the G4? or even my little G3 iMac for that matter...

Steve/Apple will deny G5 PowerBooks up until the very last minute before they are released. They want to sell as many of the current G4's, as simple as that - common business tactics! Also the PowerBook G5 would of overshadowed their great products that are suited more towards the switchers and home users. The PowerBook needs to be seperate.

There are a lot of typos, leaked documents and so on that are pointing to a G5 PowerBook release but common sense would suggest we are going to get a lame update in the next week. I'm not even gonna mention Tuesday... I think I'm gonna erase that day on my calendar. It's starting to get a bit old!

PowerBook G4 or G5, 14th Feb 2005!

I really don't see G5s coming but who knows. As long as they are out by WWDC I am good.

Last I heard, there is still no date for MWSF, is this correct? A google search only pulls up old MWSFs and speculation about G5 powerbooks.

The Register posts a story about a small html reference on Apple's Powerbook site.

According to the news site, the following url reference appeared on Apple's Powerbook pages:

The reference was in an IMG tag, speculated to be a counter for Apple's various individual web pages. The reference was changed to apple_g4_powerbook shortly after the publishing of the story.

Rumors have placed a G4 Powerbook upgrade in the coming days/weeks.

What!?

No doubt we will see a "screenshot" of the new G6 Tower URL as well.

I'll believe it when I actually see and feel a G5 PowerBook, but I guess for all those "next Tuesday" people this is another rumour for them to wish away another week.
