I actually submitted this rumor before it was posted. Anyway I am wondering if it was just a mistake or if the G5 is coming soon. I can't see them announcing it without any big press so my guess is that it isn't time for it yet, but I wouldn't mind the surprise.

Yeah, but not having any specific press event to announce it at would add to the marvel and spectacular entrance of a product that is thought to be currently impossible. It's just a thought but i think a lot of people would get very excited if it was released outside of the regular events/timeframes.

personally i dont think this is real. I have my reasons first of all

http://switch.atdmt.com/action is also a 1x1 GIF
http://switch.atdmt.com/action/apple_g5_powerbook 1x1 GIF
http://switch.atdmt.com/action/apple_g5_elephant 1X1 GIF

So if you can see what I see ... it appears that this is some scam or someting. I think Apple is just trying to trick us in a way. Its still a little early for a PB G5 however, we could see an update on the PB G4. This PB G5 may not even be out or annonced till next macworld in january. I wouldnt get all excited over this right now.

Yes but http://switch.atdmt.com/action/apple_g5_elephant 1X1 GIF wasn't present in the Apple HTML source code where as the original was. There are quite a lot of us who saw it live earlier on today.

Honestly even if they did release a new Powerbook with a G5 in it, I think the majority of people will wait for the second or third revisions to allow Apple to get it right.

I think there's a HS intern at Apple in their web design department that likes messing with people's minds...

Next week there will be an obscure tag in a web page referencing a PowerMac G6, and everyone will go crazy again! ;)

I think that this was iffy at best to begin with but the fact that they changed the reference within 1 hour is suspicious. They sure didn't waste any time making that change. Their solution to this problem is actually damn elegant. If they had simply removed the reference it would have reinforced the notion of a G5 PowerBook. By changing it from G5 to G4 we are left here to speculate. Typo or real indication? Very nicely played.

THEY WERENT IN THE LIVE HTML SOURCE CODE THAT I SAW EARLIER... THE CODE THAT WAS FIXED SHORTLY AFTER!

Just because it was in live code doesn't mean it couldn't be a typo. The interesting part that was reported was that it lead to a GIF file called:
apple_g5_powerbook.gif

That is not only a typo on a html page but also on the name of a picture file. One error maybe. But two? Interesting.

Um, why would apple have a 1x1 pixel image of a powerbook on their website? Think about it.

This is a common means of getting a page ranked higher on search engines based on words like 'g5 powerbook,' or possibly some other marketing mechanism.

In all likelyhood it is just an attempt to have this page show up when someone goes to google looking for powerbooks...

I completely agree, it's just people kept mentioning as if someone faked it. When I and many others read the source code earlier on in the day. I do find it very interesting though that it led to that .gif file.

God damn interns!!! :p

Whatever you feed in you get back a GIF with that name...

http://switch.atdmt.com/action/apple_g9_powerbook

...will return you a gif named...

"apple_g9_powerbook.gif"

In other words only one typo is needed.

One day apple will finally have out the G5 powerbook, if they want to. I don't think the G5 offers benefits that a much less wattage freescale G4 couldn't produce.
I don't think it's gonna be All That And A Box Of Weasels either. But I'm waiting 'til they come out because the day they do, I'm logging onto forums.macrumors.com and posting a 13-paragraph whine about why haven't they come out with a G6 Powerbook yet!!!

While this is not new info, I find this interesting:
http://www.forbes.com/technology/fe...7656165938380688.html?partner=yahoo&referrer=

This article talks about CPUs from IBM and AMD getting a 24% boost while keeping power requirements the same (or, current performance but with lower power requirements). This definitely sounds like a contender for a laptop, eMac, mini, and future iMacs.

AMD claims they will be releasing their first version of this chip in the first half of this year. IBM doesn't specify but I can't see them being very far behind, if at all, considering they worked on this jointly.

Of course, now the Cell processor sounds the most interesting. 1 cell in an iBook... 2 cells in a powerbook... 4 cells in a powermac. I can dream, can't I?

:D

Despite everyone's constant reference to them, I don't think I've ever seen a "powerbook next tuesday!!!!11" person...

Haven't you?? Hmmm... I keep seeing them every day, lurking around every corner... Heck, I'm not in the market for a PowerBook and I'm also expecting a G5 one to be released, dammit! :p

As someone pointed out, now that there's a $499 headless "iMac", and $99 iPod, what will we be expecting if the PB G5 is released? The return of the Newton?? :D

When you visit the Apple Powerbook page, it hits the Ave A (one of Apple's marketing firms) server (to "download" the invisible GIF) and tells Ave A what the referrer site was, so they can report on ads and sites that are linking to the Powerbook page (they use similar 1-pixel GIFs on some other Apple product pages, such as Powermac, as well).

They can also see what the browser and platform of each visitor was, for a report on potential Windows switchers (which is what the "switch" might mean, unless it identifies the "switch" banner ad campaign).

I think the "G5" in the link was just sloppy nomenclature on Ave A's part; somebody at Apple saw the Register story today, and fixed it.

I want a dual (not dual-core) G4 Powerbook with a decent graphics card.

Ok..

For the people saying "apple is just trying to trick us"....

Why? to get thousands of people hyped about a product so they can release a speed bumped version of the existing one and piss people off? yeah, that would be brilliant marketing on apple's part. way to use your brains.

I too am waiting for a G5 powerbook earnestly, and i don't necessarily think this means anything. i tend to agree with the people who are saying that apple has not been able to slide even small stuff by us lately without at least someone getting a pretty good wiff of what's cooking.

that being said, i hope i'm wrong....

and...

G5 POWERBOOKS NEXT TUESDAY!!!!!!!! ;)

If Apple is to release the G5PB, it won't be without HUGE publicity....There will be a press conference and a show....

My Question is: In the past, how long in advance have press conferences been schelduled? a week? a couple of days?

I'm of the belief that if we don't hear of any press conference upcoming, no G5, just the speed bumps...

I tend to agree with you. I remember the fanfare created around the Powerbook G4. I'd be surprised if the Powerbook G5 just quietly slipped into the line-up. Now, if we see one of those: Apple invites you to join them in a special presentation kind of invitations, then we know something's up.
