i'm getting bored of PBG5 rumours.

let's face it it'll be a big announcement, worthy of WWDC or MacWorld. both of which mean CHILL OUT PEOPLE. it's not going to happen for a while. for crying out loud it might even be NEXT WWDC before it comes, not this one...

After recently articles on the web on the possibility of the future revision of the PowerBook going either G4 or G5 duelcore, I was just wondering whether this will really mean any big difference in performance for applications and games? Or will it ONLY benefit programs that are multicore aware?

Man you people are annoying.

"OMG NEW POWERBOOK TUESDAY!!!@111"

...

Just....god it's just a damn computer.

um... this website is primarily here for discussion of macintosh computers... if you don't get excited about them, why would you want to come here?

Just a typo.

I agree with those who have said this was just a typo, after all the 4 and 5 keys are adjacent to each other.
In addition, if Tiger is designed primarily for the G5 processor, then it would seem weird to release the technology and the OS at different times. Besdies, I do not think that Apple would want bad publicity for making people who bought a PB G5 early have to buy the OS their system is nest suited for separately, particularly here in the UK after the iTunes prices thing.

Could it be possible that the reson it was changed so fast was so that people did not get into a huge hype thinking the PB G5 was coming soon? I mean, if they were serious, they would have left it up there, because they would have been working on the new PB page. Even if they were working on the new PB page, it does not neccessarily mean that the G5 PB is close (ie they design the page with the info now, then modify the specs on it the day before publishing).

Just my thoughts...

Really, though, there's no reason to think it may not have been a typo.
If someone is typing away:
iMac G5
PowerMac G5
Xserve G5
Powerbook G5

It's very easy to see that someone was typing "G5 "and forgot to switch it to G4 when they typed in the powerbook info. Again, this is also speculation but quite possible and highly probable.

Of course, if they do release G5 pb's, it still doesn't matter. I can't afford one yet. :(

The Power Mac G5 was released before Panther.

PowerBook G5 has to come out soon...

The wife bought me a 17" PowerBook G4 for our anniversary a couple weeks ago, so I think the G5's will be coming out soon. Of course, she also bought me a 40Gig iPod for my birthday in December, so I was expecting new iPods at MacWorld, too... hmmm...*who can say.

Boy imagine how stressfull it is being a web designer for apple, you make one little mistake in dreamweaver and suddenly you spark a gigantic rumour or you upload the wrong picture and you blow an announcment.

Not only Mac computers but Mac computer rumors. If this isn't a big o' sweet rumor I don't know what is. :p :D

Thanks...

Thanks for that piece of info. Forgive my error, I'm rather new to macs (that was actualy my first post). I've been following Apple properly for only a few months. The only thing I'm worried about is that I'm wrong and the G5 does come out next week, because that scuppers my parent's plan to get me a PowerBook next week, as it's bound to be ridiculously expensive.

I just thought that it would seem ideal to release one of the most anticipated notebook releases along with a well anticipated OS.

yes that's the one

While this is not new info, I find this interesting:

This article talks about CPUs from IBM and AMD getting a 24% boost while keeping power requirements the same (or, current performance but with lower power requirements). This definitely sounds like a contender for a laptop, eMac, mini, and future iMacs.

AMD claims they will be releasing their first version of this chip in the first half of this year. IBM doesn't specify but I can't see them being very far behind, if at all, considering they worked on this jointly.

Of course, now the Cell processor sounds the most interesting. 1 cell in an iBook... 2 cells in a powerbook... 4 cells in a powermac. I can dream, can't I?

:D

Yes, that is going to be the 970GX and the info in that article was previously given out by The Inquirer.

It would seem that the G5 PB would have to be based on this chip.

So we can expect the 970GX to be out in the 1st half of this year. Look for G5 PB in the appropriate time frame.

I think at most the only thing the naysayer on the board have right is that Jobs won't announce a G5 PowerBook without a serious amount of pomp and polish to the event which = WWDC = Not for a while. At best you might see a small speedbump in the short term but nothing that is going to stand out from the rest of the speedbumps Apple has released over the last couple years.

Sounds an aweful bit like the Power Mac G5 fiasco where a web-tech put the G5 stats up next to the MDD G4 in the Apple Store the week before the G5 was introduced at the WWDC.

Things that make you go hmmmm......

I still think this is all an orchestrated event by Apple, to get everyone excited. Helps spread a grassroots movement that gets filtered to the top news sites. Since Apple has a loyal following, they don't worry about the competition.

Can anyone give a time frame on how long the number 970GX has been kicked around? I'm interested in how long IBM has been working on that sucker. It could give at least a small glimpse into the timeframe of when a G5 might present itself.

[Edit: Wait a sec. Wasn't the GX expected to be dual and single core in the 3Ghz range. I don't see how or why Apple would put such a beast into a PowerBook.]

Do you think they'll come out with a G5 65nm chip sometime this year. Would it be called a G6?

First I heard of it was Thinksecret in November:

Re the .65 nm process- I think Intel isn't going to do that until Q1 2006, and I doubt IBM will be there much earlier.
