Strong suspicion now is "that's all folks"...

Shame, I really wanted a BT MMouse

If that were indeed the case it would leave a lot of people disappointed. That being said, it would explain why there isn't any keynote! Best case would then be that the reason the keynote was cancelled was due to a minor delay in a new product (i.e. PBs, PMs) and they'll actually be updated in a week or something, even though Jobs would really have liked to show them off at the Paris Expo.

As for the BT Mighty Mouse, I don't see that coming until MWSF myself...

I wake up and all I see is the .Mac upgrade, which is nice, but nothing else yet? Have they actually revealed what's behind the black curtains yet or not? Or is Steve not wanting to show all his cards right off the bat? Stay tuned I guess...

I guess, it is just that, a black curtain, nothing more.......

It must be more of a delay then just a week. I remember them introducing new products that did not ship for a month. If it was just 2 or 3 weeks then they could have just introduced them and shipped in 3 or 4 weeks.

Very true, good point. I guess it all comes down to timing. Perhaps, hypothetically, if Apple released a new product today, the shipping time would have been a week and Jobs said "No, just release it next week when we can say 'Shipping Immediately' instead of now, when we'd have to say 'Shipping in 1 Week'. And as a result, I won't give a keynote either." No one knows, so we'll just all have to be patient.

Oh, and I haven't forgot your Mac mini prediction for MWSF either - I'm still going to see if you're right or not! :p ;)

I think they would be mad not to put out for the Christmas sales this year. How hard can it be to make?

Oh, I completely agree with you. I'm just saying, rightly or wrongly, I don't see it coming until MWSF. Before Xmas would be ideal though. The whole point of not releasing it right off the bat is one of Marketing, but along those lines, shouldn't good Marketing dictate a pre-Xmas release then, to capitalize on sales?

I'm with you, but as I said, I don't see Apple doing it until afterwards. In a way, it makes you question the whole timing of MWSF itself - why not do it and release a ton of goodies before Xmas in the first place?

Perhaps signs saying "Backup 3.0" and "1GB of .Mac Storage" or something like that were what hid behind the curtains...

Would like to know for sure though... have to buy a PB this week and just don't know if I should wait another day or two...

There is nothing to see here . What a pity! Maybe next year...

For fun : Steeve with a WalkMan this morning. :p

Apple will soon regret their lacksadaisical attitude toward its customers, the hands that feed it. Sure, SJ can get by on the current teenie bopper fad/obsession on everything iPod, but if it continues to use buildup to these trade shows (which used to be major) as nothing more than living room chatter to "mystify" the obsessive-compulsive disorder-striken fan, it will see its demise sooner than later. This was an EXPO, wasn't it?

Here's to the proverb that everything that is up, must come down. The iPod craze will stop, and Apple will face mid-90s humility once again.

Thanks for that killer PB update, apple.

I am soooooooo bummed out today. I have an 867 mhz. 12" PowerBook that I bought immediately after its introduction. It's been a great computer, but I've never owned any PowerBook for this long, and I'm starting to get really antsy. I've used the new 1.5 mhz models, and the speed difference just isn't enough to get me to pull the trigger.

I was positive that today was going to be the day I saw a new 12" PB with backlit keyboard, higher resolution screen, and a 7448 chip that just didn't run so darn hot.

I can't even use a nano with this dinosaur, 'cause it's only got USB 1.1!

Where's the new PowerBook?!

The PowerBooks will be out when they are out. Plain and simple. Jobs doesn't have new PowerBooks which he is holding back just to tick you off. I know it can be frustrating, but come on, they'll be released when they are ready to be released and there is nothing you can do about it. Not even complaining will make them magically get produced faster, so what's the point?

I was SO hoping for a dual-core PB but since one was not forthcoming I guess it's another half-year or so on this '98 WallStreet. Which really isn't so bad.

Sure wish I could get 100baseT grafted onto it, though, especially without costing me a CardBus slot. The 10baseT is eating me up here.

On the other hand, my hard drive situation is better than that of anyone buying Apple's top-of-the-line PB today. And I prefer the classic 3:4 screen.

You're right, of course. Just letting off some steam.

Of course he does. Apple's a biz like everything else and is driven by marketing schemes, proper PR, and, obviously, sales. I hardly think they're "withholding" PB's for altruism. They're monitoring fools like me, who wait out and out and out and then will pay full premium on outdated technology so they can maximize profits. hey, it's just a rant -- not at you, of course ...

And like I said, fair enough, I can totally understand the frustration. I guess I've never been one to worry or get angry or frustrated about things I have no control over - I can spend my energies in better, more positive ways. ;) :)

Oh of course - I understand. ALong those lines, I sometimes wonder about the timing of MWSF - having it just after Christmas, and releasing all sorts ofen products - interesting strategy...

What's the point of the Apple Expo?

What's the point of Apple having a world expo if they're just going to unveil an upgrade to a software package, not even release a new software package? I'm amazed that Apple can go so long without upgrading the Powerbook, without going out of business. Seems like Apple is headed downhill again....

i agree with you 100%

the fact that they haven't is very stupid. im in a situation where i have to get one by the 24th because of that student union deal. this sucks. it has to be a powerbook to because im trying to learn avid but im doing light weight avid. i also game so thats why aswell. i looked alot at the 14 inch ibook and i really like it its just that i get this feeling that its a very elementary computer and the screen roslution and virtual memory are lower than that of the 15 in. if anyone has any suggestions they would be greatly appreciated. back to the subject. unless apple is planning on releasing a powerbook update tommorow or with in the next week or sigh which is highly unlikely then i think it will soon sink in and apple will see their starting to lose sales by a decent margin in the powerbook line.

buy the powerbook before the end of the student union offer. keep the powerbook in the box for 14 days. you are basically waiting to see if new powerbooks are released. if they arent, open the powerbook and enjoy along with your free ipod mini!

yep i know but what always ends up happening because it happned with my first ipod is on the 15th day the 4th gen came back and i had to fight because i still never opened it to get a 4th gen instead of a third gen

So, That Was It ! Thanks Steve Jobs !

No PB updates ?

I'm gonna buy the iBook then. Steve, you just missed 500 euros....

i hate it when store employees give me crap. if i know i'm right, i go into the store with a positive mindset. i remain calm, yet firm. the bottom line is, if you are right, you are right. when things go from ok to bad, threaten to call the corporate office. they usually don't want you to do that and they will try and come up with a way to prevent you from doing so. works a lot of the time for any business when you feel like you are being shafted. i get my way 99% of the time by following this method.

my friends call me a shark.

I agree also, this makes another big event where Apple has no new computer hardware.

IS APPLE STILL A COMPUTER COMPANY?

When was the last new computer announced from Apple?
Was it a year ago when Apple announced the imac G5?

So no new hardware was announced at MWSF05, WWDC05, Paris 05. 2005 will go down as one of the worst years ever for Apple computer releases.

Can you imagine the outcry if Dell didn't release a new model of computer anywhere across their huge line for as long as Apple has?

I get those stupid Dell catalogs at least twice a month, advertising updates, new hardware, new peripherals, or new pricing on their computer models.

Can Apple compete with this pace of hardware development when they switch to Intel?

I periodically go to http://www.apple.com/feedback/ and ask them this very question. How many iPod commercials do they put out? How many Mac commercials?

The last iMac came out 141 days ago. Looks like the iMac G5 was introduced on August 31, 2004... so yeah, just over a year. This page is great for such answers: https://buyersguide.macrumors.com//

Note that the PowerBook is indeed approaching the end of it's usual product cycle.

I think it's all part of Apple evolving. Many people asked the same questions of my company when we diversified. They kept saying, "Aren't you guys just a phone company? Shouldn't you just focus on telephone service?" Meanwhile, we were becoming a full-fledged SP, with High Speed Internet, Digital TV over DSL, Home Security offerings, Home Networking solutions, Wireless solutions, you name it. If we would have just stayed as a "telephone company" we would cease to exist right now. All that being said, I agree, even if Apple is branching out and diversifying as they are, they still should make sure to focus on computers. And by dedicating an entire 2-hour keynote at WWDC a few months ago to the transition to Intel, I think Apple has defintely not lost focus in this respect. This move to Intel is one of the biggest things for Apple as of late, and guess what - it deals with their computers, not iPods. ;)

I agree, this will be interesting to see. What's nice in the PC world, is if a new processor comes out, I can go out, buy it that day, and pop it in my machine. Same with a new hard drive, a new video card, etc. But with Apple's Intel architecture, will I still be able to do that, or will we still see a long time between upgrades? Will we be able to update the hardware in this manner instead of being at Apple's mercy, and instead be forced to buy a brand new system to take advantage of new technology?
