You seem to contradict yourself. On one hand, you say you want to know that you "have the best possible PPC PB" ...but you then say that you "don't want the best most up to date technology,

when i say that i mean that i'm not demanding that Apple put in dual core or G5 processors- all i want is the best update that Apple can realistically achieve before the Intel switch, i.e. better graphics, hdd and display- maybe a speedbump if possible. These are things that PB owners should expect with the price that they pay, just like anybody else who buys a professional notebook. Yes, they can put these into the new intel PBs, but why should we be forced to wait for mainstream technology that is already available to other notebook purchasers.

If you just want an excellent PowerBook that can get you through the next few years, then why are you lamenting?

I don't desperately need a PB now, but i will definately be buying one within the next few months before the switch to Intel. Sure i can buy the current PB but why get it now when there are rumoured upcoming updates and it isn't a necessity? I'd rather wait til a) there are updates b) closer to the intel switch.

Apple will release when the product is ready. They're not going to tell you ahead of time, because --being a smart business-- they don't want to tamper with people's buying habits now. Be grateful they're not saying they'll be introducing something on such-and-such a date, only to have it fall through because of an engineering problem or manufacturing delay

Of course they will only release when the product is ready- I'm not expecting them to put out a rushed update just to make a few people happy. All i'm after is what digitalbiker pointed out- that last October Apple gave notice to perspective iBook purchasers that they did not intend to update the line before Christmas. Apple doesn't need to inform me that they will release PBs on November the 12th or whatever exact date, just that there is something in the pipeline before the intel switch.

I can't see an announcement on the likelyhood of a PB update having an adverse affect on sales. There are a lot of people like myself who just want the last PPC PB- the one expected to be the the most stable and affective before the switch. The switch has put Apple into a very unusual position- People know that it is coming but they don't know when. Will it be January, or later on in the year around July? Because of this 6 month gap it has made it hard to know if we can expect updates to the current range or not. Fair enough people buying an iBook or Mac Mini might expect no further updates because they have only just been recently updated, but what about those people wanting to buy PowerMacs, Emacs, Imacs or PowerBooks- they are all coming up to that awkard stage where updates will not be expected if the switch is in January, but expected if it holds off until mid-year. All Apple need to do is what they did with the iBooks last October- give perspective buyers a simple yes or no.

Kind of like how they're handling the new Mac Minis? :p ;)

And I have my money right here just waiting to be spent on a new updated 15" ;)

I'm right there with you....Money's in the bank for a 15" Powerbook....

Question for all of you. I am thinking about buying a sleeve (booq vyper M) for my new PB, (whenever it comes), and just wondering if you guys think it will be safe to buy it now? I'm thinking it's a pretty safe bet that they won't change the form factor. Is that the general feeling? Thanks in advance for all of your help

Maybe one day soon we'll be seeing a new Powerbook. Does the thing with the Apple store not having BTO PB's ship for 2-3 weeks (in both the regular and education stores) actually mean something significant?

(PS sorry for the post in this thread, no one's reading the buying advice/ sleeves thread)

i would buy the sleeve now. the chance of apple releasing a different style powerbook is slim to none. i think the free ipod mini offer ends in the UK on october 8th. our best chance is oct 11th for new powerbooks. thats my feelings anyways.

I still think it's this coming tuesday, the 4th. The iPod mini offer ended here in the US on the 24th and we didn't see anything updated on the 27th, right? If something isn't released tuesday, im buying my 15" w/ 128mbVRAM right away :)

The shipping has moved to 2 days for the 15" (with no upgrades) from 24 hours in the UK store. Not sure if it means anything.

Today the shipping time on the UK store for 15" Superdrive is 2-3 weeks...

I have been posting this everywhere but it's the same in the U.S. if you're a school looking to buy a 15-inch PowerBook...

Did you check 15" 1.67 GHz with BTO?

Here in Japan, the model alone shows "3-4 weeks".
Without BTO, all models are within 24 hours.

Still, if we're going to be waiting another 3-4 weeks, some people are going to go mad around here (I'm not one of them). Although, it would be nice to see the update sooner.

Good to see a bump on the way. Wonder if a price drop is coming?

Well, it is my hope and opinion that they will eliminate the combo drive models. This would effectively allow a $200 price drop on each model.

Maybe single or dual layer DVD as options? Is there much price difference?

No, there really isn't. I fully expect the line to go all dual layer DVD burning.

the ipod mini offer ends on oct 8th in the UK. for that reason, i am thinking the powerbook will be released not this week, but next week after the ipod mini expires for them.

Yes I totally agree. They're not going to announce new PowerBooks during a promotion on older models unless they change the promotion and offer a further price reduction.

I think we're unlikely to see upgrades tomorrow. Mid to late October would be a more realistic time.

I have my money waiting for a new PB 15" or a PowerMac. Lets hope they arrive sooner rather than later!
