(I would like to see audio in and USB2.0 to make the iBook a seller.... don't think that's too much to ask for.)

Audio in yes but USB 2.0 to appear on iBooks before it is implemented across the board on PowerBooks I don't see it happening. If they update iBs to have USB 2.0 they will update PBs to have that too. Personally I don't see iBs with USB 2.0. Unless of course Apple realises the popularity of the format and the plethora of peripherals for it and put it in consumer machines for that reason.

Born-Again

I am a born-again mac user. I had a mac in the late 90's for college, but have used an HP laptop for the past 2 years. I've been waiting for months to purchase what I hope would be a revised 12" powerbook. As my new year of law school has started and my HP keyboard works only intermittently, I made my purchase on the Apple store very early this morning. Rumors be damned, I'll be happy with the current 12" pb.

My baby is a BTO with 640 MB Ram, 60 Gig HD, Combo and AE. Again, I couldn't be more pleased with my order (which also includes a 30 gig iPod to update my 20 gig), but I woke up this morning to disappointment. My PB won't ship until 4 Sept! I suppose this is the only relevant material in my post, both in that it shows a long backlog in shipping and it provides giudance to those who NEED BTO PBs shortly. Do not delay.

Anyway, I feel the pain of all who are waiting for the current or revised 12" PB. Hang in there guys.

I am sorry if I wasn't clear, but I wasn't supposing that the iBook would get USB 2.0 before the PowerBooks. I was just saying that if the iBook had USB 2.0 and an audio in port, I would prefer it over the more expensive PowerBook. Even if the PB had DVI, FW 800, AP Extreme, G4/G5, etc.

Thanks for the info. I'm either going to step down to an iBook or buy a PB this week. It will depend on how the upgrade to my desktop goes.

We won't see any Powerbooks until after September

I don't think we are going to see 12", 15" or 17" until after September. In which they will release them all at the same time.

Apple will want something to show in Paris. My guess is they're trying to get the iMac ready and if they can't finish them in time for the show, the powerbooks will be in Steves back pocket. If they have the iMac ready, they'll release the powerbooks early.

I think the retailers may have the 15" by the end of this week, but won't be able to put them on the shelves until the 12" is ready. I think the 12" is still two weeks away.

Just keep waiting. I should have never sold my iBook! I'm so lonely https://forums.macrumors.com/images/icons/icon9.gif

I have no idea when we'll see powerbooks, i can only hope it's friday, but I highly doubt that any store would receive the new 15's and have to hold them in secret for two weeks, it would just never work unless apple made an announcement before doing something like this. Any regular employee (some teenager) could happen upon one and blow the whole secret wide open.

You're right someone would let the cat out of the bag early. I do think the 15's are pretty much ready. And Apple still waiting for the 12's. Or maybe they'll release the 15's and let you preorder the 12's. Really, how hard can it be?

ok guys, i couldn't wait ANY longer. the back to school crowd here all moves in tomorrow...so i had to do it today! :) i am now the proud owner of a 17-in powerbook, a 15 gb ipod, and a printer! i will get a $300 rebate bc of the printer and ipod (which is a present for my husband) and the powerbook was $2799, an "in-store" special. i am so super happy and am loving it so far. :) :) :)

The educational discounts work at real life Apple Stores?

Education Discount

Yes, They will give you the discount at an apple store. I was in the store 2 days ago and they also had all the powerbooks in stock.
Do I wait for the new one or do I buy now?

here at my school, university at buffalo, they have what they call "ub micro" where they sell computers, printers, dig cameras, etc. , and it's a non-profit store - just selling stuff for educational purposes. they've been running a sale all summer on ibm t-40s and powerbooks...the educational price on the 17 in is 2999, but with the instore special, they took another 200 off.

Hmm....I was getting worried because all the Powerbooks seem to have like week periods before they are sent out, and people keep saying the shipping dates keep moving back and back. School starts in a week and a half and I was thinking I was going to be forced to go to the Apple Store at the mall and not be able to get the educational discount and the ipod/printer deal.

Hopefully they'll be in stock next week....

one thing i havent heard enough is that the powerbooks only have one firewire port. If you run the isight or the ipod you cant plug anything else in. Dont you think they should have more than one firewire port. They have 2 USB ports, why not add an additional firewire port?

I have to agree with you. I think that 2 Firewire ports would be a nice addition. I am planning on buying an iSight and an iPod and I already have a firewire back up external HD. 1 Port can get limiting

i have a friend who works at an "outside" apple store...he said you need id there. if there is a store at your school, they just look you up in the system. :)

I don't think they'd do enough business with computers, so my school just tells you to go online and get it...

maybe if I printed out my course schedule or something...

You can purchase an external firewire hub to hook up several devices at once. Mac World did a review on a Godzilla firewire hub in its August issue (I think). The hub can be externally powered wth an accesory AC adapter.

I have been holding out all week to see if new Powerbooks will show up this week, but alas I am getting itchy to switch from the Windoze systems I am relegated to at home. I called MacMall today and the sales rep claimed MacMall currently has about 100 Powerbook 15" 1Ghz machines in stock and 17" Powerbooks ready to ship immediately. I asked if any of the rumors about end-of-life on the 15" and 17" were true. She claimed that the 15" could be in EOL because there are currently no indications that 15" models have been ordered or will be coming in beyond what they currently have in stock.

I really want my Powerbook. Hurry up Steve and get off your a@*!!!

The 17" PowerBook has two Firewire ports, except one of them is Firewireb (dosen't it stink that they have to use a different plug?)

Still waiting...

I couldn't sleep all night, and now i've just got up to see that there are no PowerBook updates yet. :(

I just hope that ThinkSecret is right about Apple trying to get them out later this week, but I don't see why they need a meeting (Thursday) to do that.

I think I'll be getting less sleep once I get the PowerBook in my hands.

Ode to 15"

If Apple had completely *stopped* selling all 15" computers last January, then Apple might consider dropping the 15" line.

However, Apple sees that people are willing to put up with the *last* revision just to have the sacred midsize portable.

Apple knows damned well from watching sales alone that dropping the 15" makes as much sense as a bullet to the brain.

So stop worrying. Apple won't. Not because I say it will never happen, but because Apple sees it is what the customers want.

Again, only way Apple would have considered the 17" a replacement for the 15" is if no one bought the old 15".

And there are people *still* buying the 15" this close to a supposed upgrade.

Believe me, the silence is deafening...
