Now I want to write a diary of what iv'e done because these are going to be the golden hours of my case modding.

Previously
-cut out the old Back Panel with a pair of aero clips
-remove the airport thing

what i did today
i bought a 10 dollar ipod docking thing from the reject shop and i mounted them with my old friend blu tack and i drilled a hole in the back of a pci slot placeholder and threaded it through to where my audio output is supposed to be. now i just bought a y cable of ebay and it should come on tuesday or wednesday now i can have two way speakers

Tight, could you post a few pics of the ipod docking?

sure. dont get your hopes up though. you cant put an ipod there. also, im done with everything else. once my blue led power thing comes, ill take a pic. bye

Great thread.

I have a dead G4 quicksilver. A friend had a look at it and the power supply is goosed. Plan A was to get an ATX power supply and adapter cable to get it going again as an iTunes server/Time Machine backup, but the guy doing the cables couldn't ship the cable from USA to UK, so I got refunded and got an external hard drive instead.

Still got the dead G4 and I'm thinking of doing the mATX motherboard conversion and making a games PC out of it.

Should the Gigabyte GA-G31M-S2L motherboard thats recommended here fit a quicksilver the same way as the graphite G4 in this thread, or are the quicksilver internals a lot different again?

I've looked around on this some more, and come up with a 'shopping list' of bits and pieces. Its not everything I need to make a PC but I'm getting there.

Gigabyte GA-G31M-S2L mATX motherboard
Intel Q6600 2.4GHz Core2Quad
Spinpoint F1 hard drive, 500 or 750GB
Corsair Twin XMS2 RAM, 2GB (I'd run XP, which reads upto 4GB total memory including the graphics card etc.
Zotac 8800GT 512MB graphics card

I've heard that the Intel CPU cooler is crap, so I'd probably get the OEM Intel and get my own cooler, would this have to be a 'low profile' type to fit?

I have a DVD-R already in the G4, its a Lite-On 16x drive, and is quite short (about half an inch shorter than the drive carrier).

I'm looking for a CoolerMaster 'Silent Pro' PSU (the new ones) but can only find the 'Real Power' PSU's for sale in the UK, I'm also unsure of how powerful a PSU I would need. I'd like everything to be quiet running, the G4 was a hairdryer and if I get it going again I want less noise from the thing! :p

You could try and use the dvd rom drive, but you may be disappointed. I though mine was all good, then some resistors hit it. It didn't work by about a half inch. I ended up buying an external sony off of ebay.

The mobo I used was excellent, good choice.

I've never heard of combining the RAM and graphics memory for no more than 4GB. I knew RAM was limited to just over 3GB in win32 installs, though.

I used the stock cooler and it has worked fine. It is almost guaranteed to work in fact. It will be harder to use a different, non-stock one. Just make sure to check it is not too tall.

You want to look into the 400-500 Watt Power Supplies. Look around for a PSU Wattage calculator online.

You can take a look at all the pics I posted and see if your Quicksilver looks pretty much the same inside or not.

As long as you aren't overclocking, the Intel stock cooler isn't that bad. At stock speeds, my Q6600 never got above 55C at full load (and you probably won't be running at full load 100% of the time).

heh. you should go with my plans...

use these things:
Mobo:
GA-945GCM-S2L (very small board)
Processor:
Intel Core 2 Duo E6700 @ 3.33GHz with 1277FSB (O.C.)
RAM:
Corsair Value 2GB
HDD:
Seagate 500GB
DVD Drive:
LG GSA-H62N (this drive is short enough. Just cut off the surplus metal in the mounting thing.)
PSU:
Antec Basiq 500W (its about $50 bux if you know where to buy 'em)

If you need any help contact me. Thx

Oh... Nomar soz about the pics. Their coming your way. The frikin blue led power button hasnt arrived yet. ==

Hmm, a lot of PSU units have a 120mm fan on the side of the case, the G4 PSU is blank on both sides and (if I've got this right) the 120mm fan would either be facing the cpu or the side of the case (can't work out which way it fits, if the power socket is at the bottom then the 120mm fan will face the side of the case).

This Enermax psu is the same size (150x140x85mm) as the G4 so would slot straight in, and has decent reviews.

The 120mm case fan has the side of the case vented through to the space between the plastic outer and metal chassis. Would the same thing work with the PSU fan if it does face the case side?

Sorry about not posting for so long. I just want to know if you guys think a white or a sky blue cold cathode would look better. These are going on the sides and the bottom so one colour only.

You want them the entire length of the case? I think these ones are awesome, I wish I had another open PCI slot

no, not the entire length. just enough so that it looks like neons on a car

you dont need to plug it into a pci port. you just need an open slot..... it gets power from molex...

appearance mods are my specialty XD

Yeah, I saw it didn't actually plug into a PCI slot, it just takes one up for the switch

Lol you shoulve seen wat me and my friend did today..... We got my old TV Tuner Card and we ripped off the chip on my TV card and we soldered it to a random chip with random wire combinations and mac actually detects it. Except there isnt enough power to power the whole thing up. It need about 12v and it supplied 3.3.

Hello everyone,

I have been following this thread for a while now, but recently registered to participate in the discussion. I have decided to take the plung and build a Hackintosh setup. I have a scrapped G4 PowerMac case (don't have it with me, but I believe its a Digital Audio model), and want to take the next step in building the rig. Would it be possible someone could post a "shopping-list" of components I will need (ideally the ones you are using yourself now)? I would like to use this machine for graphic design, gaming (although it does not have to be a beast) and web-browsing.

Thanks!

I think the link to my mobo is posted a ways back, that's the most important part. The rest of the pieces can be purchased from anywhere as long as they are compatible with that specific mobo.

HDs and optical drives dont really matter and are nonspecific

RAM and processor are a little more specific, check the product page for the mobo to be sure with ones to buy

PSU doesnt really matter, just get one over like 400W

Just follow the same steps as I did to build mine and you should be golden. The DA PowerMac shouldn't be that much different from mine. And welcome to the forums!

KZA, which country do you live in?

Follow this list:
Mobo: Asus P5GC-MX/Gigabyte GA-945GCM-S2L
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E6700
RAM: 2GB DDR 667
PSU: Anything with a Side 120mm fan
DVD Drive: LG GSA-H62N its short :) but you have to cut the little bit of metal in the G4's DVD Drive container
HDD: Samsung SpinPoint 750GB best value $/GB
Graphics Card: Try an nVidia 8500/8600 because they're cheap now that the GFX9 cards went on the market.

There you go

Great list! Also, for a dirt cheap build, look into atom processors/mobos. If you browse around the insanelymac forums, you will find a thread detailing how compatible atom is.
