I am now changing my prediction to 1st or 2nd week of april seeing how its the start to a new fiscal quarter makes more sense to see them announced in april :(

there is something in the air!

i was speaking witha colleague whose hubby works in (spit!) marketing for apple in the uk. they have a *big* meeting this afternoon, just now in fact, but all he could say earlier was the rumour sites are being well watched internally and all he knew was the same as is (speculatlively) in the public domain. we'll wait and see i guess...

anyroads, on more practical matters, should i bite the bullet and buy the 20% reduced 20" display on the weirdly open and well stocked uk site now and wait for the new mac announcement. or, should i put my ccard away and get on with some work just in case the new kit does appear soon?

20" iMac, or 20" Cinema Display? I'd wait on the iMac, but the 20" display is wonderful, and at 20% off it's an even better deal. I've got one - with no problems. I recommend it highly - of course, if you do buy it, the rest of us will rejoice at the new, 25% lower official price which will be announced as soon as your card is charged. ;)

Maybe, but it won't be a dual xServe G5... Those aren't shipping until the end of April!

MM

What info said it was "end' of april? The announcement of apple says, the dual's are shipped in april, that could be in the beginning, mid, or at the end...

just wishful thinking here on my part

Actually, "in April" is Apple-talk for "June". :)

I predict we should stop predicting, but then ... where would be the fun in that. Predictable is for the PC world. :D

Well, maybe it's just me, but my Dual was ordered right after MWSF and originally had a 3/10 ship date... that was pushed back to 4/29. So I'm taking "shipped in April" to mean the end of April :p (maybe!)

Again, maybe that's just me. Anyone else have a Dual with an earlier ship date?

heh, I see, I see, xserve now shipping...except...now comes the fun part. But not today will power macs be updated, no. However, not far behind, they shall be.

I'm still right

When they announced the memory discounts which end March 27th, I predicted G5 updates would be either March 28th, or if you're into the Tuesday thing, March 30th.

It seemed to good to be true when the March 23rd rumor was posted - new G5s AND a still-valid memory discount? nah....

So anyway, I'm still hoping.... 5 or 7 days from now!

Yeah, looks like the 28th/30th at the earliest (and they're not going to announce on a Sunday, right? so the 30th).

I'm not sure the memory sale means a whole lot - except that Apple is now charging only twice what it would cost to buy excellent-quality 3rd-party RAM.

<<Off topic warning>>

The whole "Memory Special" was really lame.

"Here you go folks, instead of bending you over and not using lube, we'll offer you the benefit of KY with our new RAM promotion!"

Predictability is boring just like Microsoft. Another day is gone. One more and then my prediction is looking more realistic. I'm thinking that we won't see anything till WWDC and the Stevenote.

Speculation

Rev B PM prediction (which is looking more obvious): Dual 3GHz at WWDC or earlier (skipping the rumored 2.2-2.4Ghz duals). IMHO, There's no way now Apple would release an updated PM, only to do it again in three months. If they're hard at work creating an interim PM to the proposed 3GHz, then why not work a little bit harder and skip the interim revision. You know, just take the leap. I'll eat my words if I'm wrong, but it would just seem like a pointless update if we saw an update now AND at WWDC.

What?! I sure hope so! April 29?! You're going to wait another whole month?!

I put in an order for the 1.8 dual refurb for super-cheap. I don't really need the 5% faster performance during rendering video, but I DO like money. But the ship date is "on or before 05/04/2004."

Which is fine -- if something fantastic comes out in April before it ships out, I'll just re-evaluate and cancel. But that also means it's even more likely that if something is announced in April, it won't be shipping for a few months. I'd rather save $500 and have a mac than not have that $500, wait 3 months, and get an extra few hundred mhz. The performance increase isn't enough for me to completely break the bank.

French site, MacPlus.org, reports that according to their source, 3 new PowerMac G5 models will be released on Tuesday, March 23rd.

According to their information, the new machines will come in at the following specs:

Dual 1.8GHz G5, 256MB DDR400, 80GB HD, GeForce 5200 Ultra
Dual 2.2GHz G5, 512MB DDR400, 160GB HD, Radeon 9600
Dual 2.4GHz G5, 512MB DDR400, 160GB HD, Radeon 9600

MacPlus.org does not frequently publish rumors, but has published an accurate release date in the past.

I think we can agree that the French site Macplus.org does not know anything. As a result, I would call into question the whole rumor that started this rather long thread.

Maybe we can recap what we "know":
1) there is a new G5 chip that has appeared in the XServe, and we assume will be in the G5 updates
2) The chip is running at 2.0 -- but do we have any proof of the same chip being manufactured at any of the speeds that have been rumored?
3) Steve Jobs has claimed 3.0 will be achieved within a year (a year of initial announcement? of initial shipping? whatever)
4) We'll long past due updates and the entire line or hardware is really outdated (with the possible exception of the G5s)

What else do we "know"?

SNIP.

Mmm, and the 6th is a Tuesday...of a new month...after 3 months of iTunes related software and hardware...no hardware releases for like 6 months...will this be the quarter of the hardware leading up the WWDC..?

I chose right, maybe

Everytime Apple misses a rumor date for updates I feel better and better about having bought my 15" FW 800 1.25 PB. I bought it right after SJ finished his Keynote in January with no announcement of upgrades for the portable line. The more time that lapses between my purchase and a HW change will lessen my "latest ang greatest" envy.
