I dont see there ram promotion meaning anything if it runs till the 27th then if new g5s are announced tomorrow they probably are hoping for that big "Oh wow if i get a new apple today i can get ram to" so it might be a little gift for anyone buying new g5s for those 4 days but who knows :p

The PC sucks and lacks a viable, stable and secure OS. That is why we are all hanging out here.

If Linux was better I would gladly bid Apple farewell.

As I see it, OS X is my only choice. So I have to put up with slow product development.

I was NOT impressed with the G5 once the true performance numbers got around. It is well engineered but slow. Only the dual 2GHz model can approach a fast PC.

Nope, we need soemthing better.

That's only partially fair. The G5 is very fast, but it doesn't have the proper software support from Apple yet. If you look at the difference between unoptimised and optimised code, it isn't difficult to find examples where software has speed up 30% just from developer optimizations. One of my coleagues benched IBM's XLC and XLF compilers (while in beta for PPC970 support) and they saw an average of 35% performance increase over GCC 3.3 and their unoptimized Fortan compiler.

The G5 is a nice machine right now, but it doesn't destroy the Athlon64s and Pentium4s the way it should (that is a dual G5 should destroy single x86 processors in multitreaded tasks) There will, however, be steady performance increases with the G5 as Apple fine tunes more of the frameworks in OS X.

Check out the Top 500 rankings on the opteron clusters. They don't approach VT's G5 cluster.

If you really want/need a PB, this one is solid as a rock and is going to be hard to beat by just a processor upgrade.

Copy all but I would still be upset if I buy today and Apple releases a new PB tomorrow. I can wait for about 3 more weeks before I have to buy. Worst case, I wait until WWDC and buy then but I can't wait any longer than that because I'll be out o the country.

Okay, who stole my TO DO LIST!
GRRR. :(
and, and published it on the Internet?

Is nothing sacred?

I won't hurt myself if updates aren't announced tomorrow....I will just spontaneously combust. About that mac spy article, I would be dissappointed if the low end model was not dual, it just makes more sense to make it dual and price it at around 1800.

I know what I'm going to do tomorrow (23rd). I'm going to laugh at everyone who thought new macs would come out on the 23rd. Yes, that's right. In fact, maybe I'll start my laughing right now, in order to fuel some resentments! Ha, HA Hahaha!

Take that for what its worth.....

Seems fishy to me...it claims 1280 X 1024 res. on a new "widescreen" 17" monitor, but that is the current resolution.

It would be nice to have those G5 specs though. We shall see.

Yep, looks dodgy.

No indication of anything else for the screens but a form factor from plastic to metal...and the 17" is widescreen at the wrong resolution...

G5's also look dodgy...those hard disk capacities don't make sense. 2.0Ghz only has 256MB... Graphics card's look sus... Why go backwards on the 2.0Ghz...

I think its a crap source...

Even though i am really hoping that they do come out tommorrow i will not be able to check until i get back home. The reason for this is that i am leaving in the AM between 8 and 9 am EST and heading from Miami to Ft. Myers to catch my beloved Red Sox in a Spring Training game. This will hopefully allow me to relax and unwind, although i will be having my girlfriend check the apple site when i am out and give me a call if something does occur. If not no big deal as i have been waiting with money in hand from Jan. 2nd and thinking about the G5 since it came out.
No big deal if it doesn't come out but if it does my bank account will be drained .

fx?

will the new powermacs definately have the 970fx? did ibm already dump the r&d on the 970? is the 970fx superior in speed or just power consumption? what practical benefits, besides a lower electric bill, will there be to 970fx powermacs?

I will join you as we laugh. Ha! Ha ha ha! Ha ha ha haaaaa!

Of course, this is only because I've got a dual-2.0 now, and as soon as the new ones come out, I'll go from "fastest publicly available Mac on the planet" to "hey, dude, my Grandma has a faster Mac than you", so I'll be sitting in a corner crying, hence I might as well laugh now, and maybe for the next week, 'cause the tears, they are a comin'.

My best guesses...

The following are my best guesses for PM G5 updates. Please note that these guesses are based on speculation only, and I have no insider info.

Date: March 30/04 (after the U.S. memory rebates to clear out old stock end, but prior to IBM's Power roadmap announcements - Steve hates to be upstaged)

Processor: 90 nm 970FX (smaller and less expensive to make)

Processor speeds: dual 2.0 (keeping the same motherboard as the current top end model), dual 2.3 (remember the xServe graphic?), dual 2.6 (wasn't there speculation that IBM was already producing 2.4 GHz chips?)

Bus speeds: 1/2 of processor speeds

Optical drives: combo drive in base model, 8x SuperDrive in other 2 models

RAM: 256 MB in base model, 512 MB in other 2 models (this is Apple, after all)

Price: $2199 (sorry, upgrades to dual processor and PCI-X motherboard), 2599, 2999

Also, dual 2.3 xServes will be announced (in addition to the dual 2.0's).

I expect single 1.6 and 1.8 GHz G5 iMacs will be announced this summer, possibly in the same brushed aluminum and (this is wild speculation) featuring detachable 17, 20 and 23" Cinema Displays (if they could use the same manufacturing process for these as their other Cinema Displays, it would save them $$$).

I'm so confident in these predictions (NOT!) that I'll eat my left hand (apologies to NeatGekko) if ANY of them are right!

I agree - no many hours to know if we are wrong on this one.

I am not sure about buses. Not sure what the value is given the RAM only goes 400. And No, I am not an engineer...it shows right :p

Optical drives: combo drive in base model, 8x SuperDrive in other 2 models

RAM: 256 MB in base model, 512 MB in other 2 models (this is Apple, after all)

No, I think 512 across range. Its POWER mac after all. Two 256 sticks minimum.

SNIP

Well here's hoping.

You evil man.

Computers. What computers. I thought Apple was a digital music device company?

I'll be surprised if they release new machines tomorrow. Usually more rumors pop up right before the day of the release. Things have seemed a bit slow.

Other rumor sites seem to be posting just that rumors about the upcoming weeks, the EOL from resellers and such, all i have to say is we will know the truth in the not so distant future. Can't wait to hear the phone call from my girlfriend telling me to go get my new computer, or so one can hope. Considering i will be far enough away from a computer that i will not have a clue as to what went on during the day.

Does anyone actually think there will be any new G5's today ???
I hope so, I am getting a bit tired of, 'it will be out next week?' 'any day now?'

anyway, i want to buy a new machine and there is no point buying one now until the latest ones are out !

what do you think the TOP spec will be ?

If they are out today or this week, how long till they reach the shores of Europe ? Spain to be exact.

:)
