I dont know. Not something I have come to grips with either. Maybe the new G5s will pull so far in front that the old G4 duals at 1.42 Gmz will pale further, finally leading to a drop... Maybe the PB and iBooks, iMacs and eMacs with their bumps this year, and hopefully in most cases jumps to G5, will finally make prices slide...

Refubrished SP 1.25s are running $1,099 right now, as per the Apple Store. You can catch a 12" iBook for a $150 discount, a 1.6 G5 for a $400 discount (stepping up $100 at each grade for the next two models), and the one that surprised me and is making me seriously consider buying a machine earlier than I'd planned, a 15" 1ghz G4 superdrive PowerBook for a whopping $800 discount.

Whoa. Is this new? Not bad.

So this is a long thread, which says a lot about anticipation for the new G5s, but I wanted to inquire about the end of those promotions. The memory promo, the printer promo (yipee), and the iPod engraving promo have all ended. Hopefully this points to something, at least something more than a new set of promos.

I was also wondering how much the laser engraving on iPods costs, cause I held out on the hopes that a new 4th gen release was due. I guess I dropped the ball on that one, as i had ought to just suck it up and buy a 40 gig and be done with it. Any news on the iPods? :)

The memory promotion has been extended. There is a new promotion, $500 rebate on a PM G5 purchasd with a 23" CD.

No new Macs til WWDC, at least that's how it looks.

iPod news must be around the corner. Apple needs to do something.

I hadn't seen it before, but the line at the store is: PowerBook G4 1GHz/512MB/60GB/SuperDrive/GigE/56K/AirPort Card/Titanium/15"TFT - Refurbished -- $1,799.00. This particular machine has the Radeon 9000 Mobility, instead of the 9600, a 7455 processor with 256k L2 and 1MB L3, and a 133mhz bus, according to lowendmac.com.

By comparison, a similarly formatted brand new 15" would look like this: PowerBook G4 1.25GHz/512MB/80GB/SuperDrive/GigE/56K/AirPort Extreme Card/Aluminum/15"TFT -- $2599. Updated in several ways, the Al books have Radeon 9600 Mobility chips, 7457s with 512k L2 and no L3, and a 167mhz bus, along with a slightly bigger HD.

I'd still buy one, if I can work out the finances. I beats the hell out of my desktop and laptop both.

It is amazing what people will pay on something like ebay for an older Dual 1 GHz. When they can go by a 1.6 G5 for the same price or less than they pay on ebay

A lot of those people need/want to boot into OS 9, which a G5 won't do.

Allot of macs are used by graphics houses, and Quark only just got OSXed apparently so many are still running G4s to support OS9 environment. I would say the switch will take a bit longer, maybe financial new year and upgrades with new budgest, maybe even till Christmas when most places close down and they can replace the hardware in peace.

Smart to order an iMac now.

My head hurts with these rumors.
Maybe I'll order an iMac now. I'm shaking.
Paul, ordering a 20" iMac with an iSight and AppleCare would be a
real smart move right now.
No telling when the next iMac upgrade will happen, and
why would you need a G5 chip in your iMac anyway?

Are you thinking about getting a SuperDrive?

Is there any real reason why if the G5 PM is delayed

Apple couldn't go ahead and update the eMac and iBook with the 1.5 GHZ 7447A G4 ? At least the lowend machines could enjoy a boost to their specifications.

As I recall, the Moto 1.5 GHz G4 will not ship until late summer. They are shipping or are about to ship a 1.4.

So does this mean no bumps at WWDC for emac and ibook? Is this pretty much the chip they would both get?

What amazes me is that this thread is still going. We are almost a week past the 23rd. I wonder why someone didn't start a thread about he 30th.

I will definitely get a Superdrive. I'm still holding out for a mid range G5. I'm not buying anything until April 15th. My attendant lets me use her credit card. The Limit goes up on the 15th. I'm too poor to have credit cards...

The iMac G4 comes with a cool 20" LCD screen built in, which is real good.

If you get a new dual G5 PowerMac, you will have spent all that money and
still not have the equivilent of a 20" Apple Cinema Display.

My 1GHz G4 PowerMac is more than good enough for me,
are you going to be doing real high-end stuff?
Also, had I gotten a G4 iMac, I'd have a 20" LCD screen to look at,
and I don't. All I have is an old 19" CRT monitor.

Are you in hopes a newly released iMac will have a G5 chip,
if so save your money but be prepared to wait...
probably until Christmas, or maybe even next year at the earliest.
Must admit, it could be next month too, no one knows.

If you use the credit card, will you be paying it off with savings
or are you planning to go into debt?

If they do build an iMac G5 with screens that mount on an arm so they can just product a single set of screens for their main desktop LCD lines (iMac and PM) then I wonder if they will also try and support the 23"?

Would such a single screen design, for either desktop or arm mounting be a big deal?

(not wishing to stir the headless iMac / Cube debate, just wondering if thats a big deal due to size and weight)

Thylacinus cynocephalus...'dog-headed pouched-dog'

Extinct 1936 Tasmania, Australia.

Better known as the Thylacine or "The Tasmanian Tiger" or "Tasmanian Wolf"

Size of a dog, up to 35kg, 130cm long...biggest modern mammal carnivore in Australia (besides humans) and closest thing to a big cat (Quolls are too small) we might have had, with its stripey vertical backstripes reminicent of a tiger

That Avatar picture is from a black and white news reel of one in captivity, probably having a yawn or bark...

Not something you want to meet in thick forest whilst looking for firewood at night...

Since January I have said here that the G5 updates would occur in March -- and since February I have said they would be the 23rd or 30th. I figured I would go on the record as saying there will be G5 updates today!

In a couple of hours I will be back to say "I was wrong".
