Would it not be better for Apple to say, right, we've made a revised product it's going to be out in 1 month. In the meantime, we've reduced the price of the current one to get rid of it. If you buy it, that's what you get. If you want the new one, wait.

I'm sure this happens for some of their products but it sure as hell didn't happen when they released the (3rd gen?) iPod. I bought a 30Gb and about a month later they released the 40GB for exactly the same price, so I basically got ripped of £100, which at minimum wage (£4.50) would have taken me three days of work. Why should I work three days just to give Apple profit they don't even need (they don't need it because they clearly did without it after the upgrade). If I got paid minimum wage, I'd be really peed off.

The way they release the products just seems to pee people off, well me at least!

I don't see how you got ripped off - a month after you bought yours, they upped the capacity. How is this a rip-off? No company I know of reduces prices before the next generation comes out, and, even so, it was a whole month before they upped the capacity - and the 30GB ones had been out a while. This has to be expected.

If you want to reduce your chances of getting "ripped off", buy when things first come out. Of course, then you're a bit of an unpaid beta tester....

I bought my dual-2 last September. I think it's fair to say I've gotten my money's worth (my only regret is not waiting until "Panther Night" end of last October when I couldn't gotten it 10% off). If I bought one now, well, I'd probably be upset when they upped the speed. But it wouldn't be unexpected.

By the time I finally received it, it was probably a couple of days before the new ones were launched. Unfortunatley I didn't visit places like MacRumours, so I had no clue. I learnt my lesson but even since then I research sites like MacRumours to make sure what I'm about to buy isn't just about to be EOL'd or updated. It's like I handed Apple £100 extra for a product they knew would be updated really soon after. How's that fair?

I don't think it's fair that I am paying a set price for something then a better version, for exactly the same price is released soon after. It surprises me that me nearest computer store (PC World, UK) still stocks old models of the iPod and Powerbooks. People are obviously buying them, not knowing that the models have been replaced with better versions. They should be getting more for their money.

Well, you have to buy when things first come out to reduce the risk of all that, and, even so, nothing computer-related is going to stay "state of the art" or "best" for long at all. I guess you need to decide if what you're getting is worth what you're paying. If so, then just buy it and don't look back!

To top it all off, the girl at Apple told me not to expect any updates for a long time. **Rant over, I swear**

I understand your point though, on the flipside, Apple is a business and they make money by updating excellent products. I'm sure a good percentage of their income comes from die-hard fans who have to get the latest and greatest, as soon as it comes out. It makes money and keeps Apple going, so I guess it's not as bad after all.

Paul, people are in love with iPods :p, not Apple  - which just makes them as part of the Digital Hub concept AND to win PC users over to trying Mac computers through iTunes.

Would you want General Motors to stop making Pontiacs, Cadillacs and Hummers just because GM disappoints you when it stops manufacturing your favorite Oldsmobile ,Chevy Camero or El Camino. Buy a Corvette, next years model (so wait) not this years, or get a pickup truck instead. :D

Paul, getting mad at other GM products because you don't get the one you like is not logical , it does not make sense. Ignore the iPod, why should you care? Focus on what you like and want. :)

You're right! I can't even use an Ipod. :p

I was. It certainly is hard to wait, however. I don't know if I can last till WWDC if there is nothing soon.

Yeah, waiting can be a bummer. But let me tell you, I've tried going to a PC (for gaming). Only to find out I did not enjoy it like I though I would. I hated having to deal with Windows for the minute and a half it took to start the machine and wait for the game to boot up (I even used an Apple flat panel with it so it would appeal more). It ended up sitting in a corner when I found my G4 could play the same games I liked. I was really blown away by the fact that my Mac also played the games I liked better than this PC I had built which had "higher specs". (of course this is not the norm) I ended up selling the PC and taking a loss. I love using my Mac for everything I like and do!
I'm not saying PC's suck or something, but once you get used to a Mac and the way it functions, it's very difficult to use a PC just because you think you need higher specs.
Hope you can hang on for a little while - I don't think it'll be until WWDC.

Now you can't attribute the boot of time of an OS to the ability to play a game.

I must say as a recent convert (2002) and then as a gaming convert (just sold my P4 2.26GHz) the PC has the gaming side hands down. It's not because Windows is a better OS, it's because 95% of the gaming community uses it.

I've been purchasing games for Windows of many flavors for the last 10 years. They come out sooner, and there are more of them. Not that the games that come out on the Mac OS X platform suck, it's just that they traditionally lag almost a year sometimes. Other times they are day and date (Blizzard)

That being said I'm hoping for a speed bump soon so I can buy me a new desktop. Right now I settled on some new lenses for my digital SLR

Thanks for the great advice. Switching to a PC would be a last resort for me if I don't see any good powermac rumors or actual updates by NAB. Luckily I have a lot of PC using friends who would help me with the OS. Plus I would definitely use Style OSX. :D

If you buy a PC you have to worry about worms. My cousin had a worm kill her hard drive, and she spent a month trying to fix it but she gave up and bought an Emac. She says OSX's interface is better.

Too true. I love Macs and OSX but there are so many good things happening in the PC world right now like PCI Express graphics cards and the new AMD FX-53. NOTHING IS HAPPENING IN THE MAC WORLD.

Steve better hurry on these updates. WWDC 2003, he said they would be at 3Ghz "within 12 months". I'm curious whether they're even going to be able to fulfill this promise...

RANT! RANT! RANT! RANT! RANT! RANT! RANT! RANT! RANT!

argh!

I'm sure that this is not true. Although Apple might not tell us anything right now, I'm sure they are working on stuff "behind the scenes". Also, with IBM releasing the 970fx you can't say nothing is happening. It's just a matter of time.

Maybe tomorrow will be "magic Tuesday" :)

Maybe if we all sing a Magic Tuesday song while holding a framed picture of Steve Jobs, we will be blessed with updates. I think the words should be sung to tune of that 80's song "Happy Birthday" by Claire Grogan. It would go something like this:

"Magic Tuesday, Magic Tuesdayayayaya" and so on.
Any gospel type theme would also do. Garagebanders get working!

:p :p Sounds like it could be a good recommendation for the "Song Recommendations" thread

Conclusion

I've concluded, that even with $500 rebates for the über-beautiful 23" HD Cinema display, it is probably a better idea to wait until the Rev.B G5's are released. I've been theorizing that the 970fx processor is likely to work out kinks in the current G5's, and upgraded hardware and software. Subsequent iterations of a new product will more than likely be cheaper to produce that the first version of a product, and will likely include 8x DVD-R drives. Besides, the Rev.B's are supposed to require less power, maybe the enclosure will be smaller, even though the current G5's are beautiful!

Anyone else think along the same lines?

Have you ever bought a car in the US? New models are announced years in advance and you have an excellent idea of when a new model will come out. There are TONs of "end of model year" sales and inventory reduction sales.

Again, my problem is not so much the lack of PM updates (which is really annoying) but charging the same amount today as last September. You said yourself that you bought in September when the models were first shipping. The problem here is we all expect updates, but don't know when they're coming, and if we order now we pay the same amount you did in September and (most likely) the same amount people will pay after the update for a better model.
